There are people (Apple's apologists) over in the News section of MacRumors Forums (The new Apple ad..."We Believe" thread) that essentially say that the reported light bleed problems (and other quality control issues) are essentially a figment of everybody's imagination, and that 99 percent of all iPad 2s are defect-free.

Seems they don't spend much time reading over here.

Unbelievable that people can ignore such a widespread problem.

I am hoping that Apple will have a fix for this and that those that want to exchange their iPads will be able too. If not I am going to keep the iPad I have and enjoy it but I would love one that had a screen with far less bleeding.

Amen. This flaw NEEDS to be corrected ASAP.

LOL to all the people who have posted on here with the defense, who uses the iPad in a completely dark room.... APPLE DOES. Watch the one and only ipad 2 ad, shot in complete darkness. Apparently that is one of it's intended uses. Seems the one in the ad doesn't have the backlight bleed problem. All I'm asking for is one just like advertised.

I swapped my 64gb iPad 3G out three times before giving up and returning. The last one had a problem with the camera as well as the light leakage. I'm going through iPad 2 withdrawal though :(

I can see noticeable bleed at brightness level 50% in a fully lit room, and it's distracting in the dark. Got mine on US launch day, and only started noticing it over the last few days. Maybe it's just not something I noticed before, but I wonder if it's getting worse. Watching TV shows and movies, playing Sword and Sworcery, now it's all I can see.

Glad to know Apple's acknowledging the issue. I think my strategy is to wait and see if there are reports of "fixed" or "much better" iPad 2's out there. Then ask for a replacement. Maybe get on the record with a Genius first.

I would never EVER tolerate this much bleed in a TV, and I don't think this would pass the Steve test.

I wonder how many they had to test before find one without the bleeding LOL

So I just called AppleCare...twice.

The first I requested a case number, the agent gave it to me with little questions asked. Seemed a bit distant, to be honest, regarding the issue.

Then I checked on the status at Express Lane and it read "closed", which is not cool. So I called again, entered the case number and talked to a certified "iOS agent" or something; told him to make sure the case is indeed open and he did (I guess Express Lane's page doesn't have the same info as AppleCare), asked him if the third iPad 2 I'll receive has the same problems then it'll be taken care of down the road, to which he replied absolutely.

Interestingly, he hasn't gotten a call about backlight bleeding for a while. I'm the first person to call him in a long time regarding the issue, so either he's not getting people like us calling him or the issue isn't being very noticed by others, who as a result don't call it in.

The reality of the situation and the scripted corporate line you are fed are two very different things :)

Do not always believe what the phone person is stating :) They have directions from management.

Oh no doubt. I was and still am somewhat skeptical of his claim, but then again, the Genius at the Apple Store had no problem telling me people have come to him with the issue. :p

My light bleed has started to get better. Two prominent bleeds are almost gone. I have been setting my ip2 in the sun to dry my ghost armor application. Maybe something is still setting in the glue sandwich?

LOL the bleeding on mine just seems to be getting worse rather than better. The light seems to be showing higher up the screen from the place it's coming from than it did. WTF

My only hope is that those who denied the iPhone 4 death "touch" issue now have a iPad 2 backlight leaking issue and are irritated by people denying it!!!

For me, I had and have the iPhone 4 death touch issue as I still can't get/keep a good connection in my house (phone or data) if I don't have my iPhone 4 in a case just holding the phone "for me" normally.

I have an iPad 2 and really had to look for the issue, but yes if I turn my brightness up and go into my bathroom and turn out the lights and put an all black screen I can see some leakage. In "my normal" use I probably never would have noticed it and even after noticing it I can't really say it bothers me.

Am on my third iPad now and it still has backlight bleeding and its the worst so far. I swear how hard is it to release a product that is not defective. Apple must go to another manufactory as this is pissing me off.

I am waiting for my final replacement to arrive. I say final cause either this one will have minimal to no backlight bleed (as AppleCare told me), or it's getting returned and I want my money back.

This is ridiculious and if this many people are complaining about it, then it's a serious issue that too many of you seem to deny.

AppleCare just informed me, after my 5th swap that "capture is closed" for this issue and that he would need to set up a repair. I told him that was unacceptable and that all I'm requesting is a replacement after the issue is fixed.

Perhaps they are getting closer to figuring out what the real problem is?

If we are assuming the units have all been assembled correctly, then there is a flaw in the design. If that's the case, it will not be remedied and Apple will do nothing about it beyond exchange your units or refund your money. If the issue is one of assembly, or a manufacturing tolerance that can be tweaked, we have a 50/50 shot at getting better iPad 2's in a later manufacturing run.

Either way, though, don't expect Apple to say anything publicly about the problem. They will silently fix it or not.

I suspect we will never see a complete fix on this generation at least a high probability nothing will be done. Why do I say this? I've seen this before.

The first generation iPhone. A good portion of the units after the first few weeks had this "negative black," issue. It wasn't 100 percent of the units as I actually ended up with a good one, but I went through about four replacements or refurb models that had the "negative black." The second generation iPhone was much better in this regard and of course today iPhone 4 screen is fabulous (knock on wood that doesn't change).

Second, I've wanted a new iMac since the 16x9 models came out. I've had a couple 27 inchers, 1 21.5 incher, and seen a couple other in normal lighted homes. Each one had the yellow screens on the right and bottom portions particularly. They are still like this today. Some of the 24 & 27 cinema displays have this problem too. Apple says nothing but that they use some of the best displays available.

Therefore, I am not hopeful of iPad 2 getting 100 percent remedy. However, some of us will enjoy it as it is without much worry. Others might want to wait until the next generation. iPad Original isn't so inferior after all and can be had cheap.

Nevertheless, we know Apple has many amazing products. The notebooks are fantastic with great displays, terrific iPhone 4s and iPod Touches, etc. They make extraordinary products.

Some of us simply know the products so well, that when something is a bit off like this, we notice it. We also have a forum of thousands who help us spot such issues. Many won't notice it. Some will though, and there is nothing wrong with pointing it out.

Each person has to decide, if they even notice it, what the best solution is for them. Enjoy it as is, or wait for iPad 3.

Nevertheless, this thread is great in continuing to update us all, on if there ever is a significant change in the production and how the displays look.

None of this justifies why my ipad 1 had no bleed and my ipad 2 did. I saw *many* ipad 1s. I saw many ipad 2s. The 2s had bleed. The 1s did not.

It does not have to be like this :D

Swapped mine at the Apple Store on Sunday.

They were very busy but awesome no problem on the swap gave me a 64 gig black brand new in box. Kudos to the Genius who couldn't have been nicer.

Backlight bleed which was very bad on the first one this one might actually be worse or identical.

This one did have less scratches and nicks in the bezel but the home button is off a bit, a little high you can catch it with your nail. I am keeping this one and would actually have taken the first one back but didn't want to cause a fuss.

I think this is a live with it kind of situation!
