does the brown box mean they are refurb?
Not necessarily, especially when it is a newly released device. More than likely there are no refurbished units in circulation yet, and so they're just units designated for replacements.

So are you guys getting brown boxes or retail boxes (with manual, cords, etc.) when you get a replacement?

I am sure this has something to do with Apple deciding to use glue to adhere the glass to the screen. They should have stuck with iPad manufacturing process! My 64GB iPad is picture perfect.

this is what applecare sent me, doubt they checked it before shipping it out.

lets keep this realistic - the only perfect black screen you will get is something that is not backlit, but is something like AMOLED or SAMOLED.

What we can hope for is an evenly backlit screen- you will always get some sort of milky effect, check any LED backlit LCD screen in a TV or otherwise, even a computer screen.

Field report for Londoners: I took my Ipad2 into the Covent Garden apple store yesterday. Had to wait 30 mins past my appointment slot, they were running behind, but when it was my turn a very nice girl listened to my sob story about backlight bleeding. She immediately knew what to look for and took it back in the dark to verify when i pointed out where the splotch areas are. She came back and said they were going to switch it out for me, she sees the bleeding. This took about 30 seconds to all go down.

They pulled a brand new in box unit from downstairs because they have no replacements, and luckily I brought my box so I was able to get the box of the new one as well (nice for serial no's matching up.) The new unit doesn't have uneven blotches, especially by the home key. You can see the variation in gradient with pitch black but it is more evenly distributed and doesnt show up in uneven blotches. Anyway, I'm happy with my new unit and for now I'll be keeping it.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up not to get carried away, switch yours out if you were like me (blotch by home key and left side) and hopefully you'll get one that pleases you. But do not expect perfect blacks with IPS / LCD LED Backlighting.

Swapped out my 64GB AT&T iPad2 yesterday at the Apple Store due to a pronounced pink tinting. Received a sealed retail box. The backlight bleed issue is much better on the new unit. 7/8 of the edge area is 100% clean and black, with only a little bleed on the lower left side. Very acceptable compared to the other iP2s we own and compared to the one I exchanged.

BTW, I worked the issue through national Apple support who reserved the replacement unit for me at a local Apple store. Apple CS service is awesome within those first 14 days.

For those who have gotten replacements, is the Genius Bar swapping them out for a new iPad in the retail box (with cords, manual etc.) or are they doing the brown box replacements?

They gave me a brand new sealed white retail box.
This one has the same problem though so will be going back, I'll let you know what they try to give me tomorrow, to be honest I'm tempted to just get a refund though.

What exactly do they do with the Ipad's many have returned? Send them back to Foxconn and make amendments to those units?

as of course, they are still working perfectly well.

Just been on phone to Applecare For 45mins, I have been given an email address to send pictures to, even better Applecare Supervisor called store and told me that they have new batch of iPad 2's in stock.

Im now on my 4th iPad 2 and this one also has the glass lifting under home button i have finally been give some usefull information and feel like its close to being resolved.

Just had mine upgraded free of charge to 64GB, and a complimentary leather smart cover by Apple!

I hope the screen bleed isn't too bad

So they upgraded you why for backlight bleed ? did they not have your unit in stock? Just curious...

What your opinion about the bleeding on my iPad

nah, yours is minimal.

That is about what mine is and slightly better than my wife's, we are keeping both rather than risk something worse.

Do you see observe bleeding effects while using a black background even on moderate lighting? Like the one on top right of my previous image was visible in appropriate lighting (like windows open on a cloudy day) as well. That one spot is the only concern for me. Others spots are minor and visible only under dark room and a dark background. I can see that spot while using Kindle reader on black background on a decently lit area. Attached is the picture for that.

Also a question for those who have tried replacements and accepted the bleeding state of their latest iPads? Under your finally approved iPad do you still observe some bleeding on a black background under normal light conditions? Your answers will help me set my expectations before going to an Apple store and testing replacement for my current iPad.

Thanks.

I just was able to get a 64GB at&t iPad 2 this morning. It also has the light-leak and at least one significant splotch at the top (along with several smaller ones that are still noticeable). I am going to give it a few days and go from there. I don't know if I'm going to return/exchange or just hold it for a few months until this issue is resolved. Pretty frustrating.

Edit:
I just did the "test" and it's actually pretty bad. The ones I had before were two big splotches and about 6 smaller one.
This one, if you are holding it with the home button to the right, as a corner of the screen that is full-on light-bleed. It actually goes across the corner and covers 10-20% of the screen. Dzamn.

To your first question, honestly yes to some degree. It is noticable anytime I'm viewing something in letterbox under any light. Of course, while in bed in a dark room it's pronounced to a much higher degree. Don't try to gauge anything under the Apple store lights. I've tinkered around in the store looking and couldn't see a bleed on any iPAD. It's not that they have good ones per se, it's their lights are highly focused and increadibly intense.

Your second question will likely generate responses similar to mine, that yes you can see it under any light and that's true. However, to be honest some of that is because we are looking for it. Your talking to a sub-set of apple consumers and ones that are highly critical, justified though IMO.

The decision is of course yours to make, though. If you swap there is a high probability that you will get something worse. It your money and your vote, no one is happy about this but there aren't many options other than spending lots of time swapping and rolling the dice.

Thanks a lot guys for your prompt and relevant answers to my questions. Honestly I like iPad 2 for what it can do. I am not an Apple fanboy and this is my 2nd Apple product (first being iPhone 1st Generation). It ends me with mixed feelings about Apple for making such a wonderful product but with bleeding issues in majority of their iPads. I always mange to resist the temptation of getting carried away with electronic upgrades and prefer using my devices for at-least 2-3 years. That's why I waited for the 2nd generation of iPad for things to improve and stabilize but perhaps I was wrong.

I may try visiting the Apple store once within the first 14 days looking for a better replacement and checking the replacement unit at some dark corner of the store. Though as a lesson from this forum, I will keep no expectations and may come back with the same unit.

This forum has been very useful and I will check it later to find if there are any updates or tips on getting your bleeding iPad replaced with a non-bleeding (if that happens) one. For now, I will learn to ignore the bleeding issue and enjoy my unit for years to come :).

Thanks.

There is a VERY EASY SOLUTION to the light bleed issue that nobody has bothered to mention... Fire the blind FoxConn employee who is letting these get through Q/C! :)

what was the iPad manufacturing process? was it different

While the iPad manufacturing process may or may not have changed, I believe our friend, Mr fretdevil, may have been referring to how the iPad 2 glass is held almost entirely by glue (if not entirely) rather than by a mix of adhesive (glue) and mechanical (clips) entities previously employed in the build quality of the original iPad.

The iPad 2 can be disassembled by using a heat gun and careful prying up of the front glass, as demonstrated by ifixit.com, whereas the glass to the original iPad had to be carefully pried out from the clips and can be further separated from the display by prying apart between the glued entities.

I just got my first iPad 2 this morning, only had to wait 45 minutes to get a ticket, then one hour for the store to open. 32 GB, wifi, black.

If I crank the brightness up to 100% and look at a black screen, I see a few points of light leak.

Picture it this way, holding the iPad in landscape mode, my right hand over the home button. There is greater brightness in the bottom two corners, as well as brightness on the top edge, an inch in from either corner.

Other than that test, I am running at 40% brightness, and really don't give a damn about light bleeding that I have to change the settings to even notice.

For the moment I am very happy and will hopefully stay that way, still have to finish giving her the shakedown.

This is mine I Picked up today at the apple store (Black 64GB WiFi)

Defiantly not the best i have seen but the good thing is it's not the worst

I am most likely going to wait for a few months and then swap because i can only see it at 100% in a dark room on a black background

Think i should try to return?

mine has a little bit, but it doesn't bug me a) seems like all of the ipads have a bit of light leak. have yet to see a perfect one. and 2nd my brother got me it engraved as a best man gift, so i wouldn't return it. i think some of you are freaking out for no reason. yes some of them are horrible, but mine is barely noticable at 50 percent and i never use it at 100

Really?

Lmao, freaking out for no reason, followed by "yes some of them are horrible" hahahaha, I'd say that's a reason wouldn't you? Honestly no one is freaking out here, I assume everyone's mad cause they paid premium price for a premium product from a well known brand and it wasn't up to par. How is this hard for some people, like you, to understand? In any case, yeah cocaine is a hell of a drug, isnt it? I guess it's getting a little old, every couple of pages some ass just says it's OCD and then their next post is complaining that the home button is crooked.

I'm still waiting for someone to say it's finally good to go buy one.
