lets keep this realistic - the only perfect black screen you will get is something that is not backlit, but is something like AMOLED or SAMOLED.

What we can hope for is an evenly backlit screen- you will always get some sort of milky effect, check any LED backlit LCD screen in a TV or otherwise, even a computer screen.

QFT. Note this 2-year old Dell 19" monitor. I never much liked it, but my kids haven't complained:

I am definitely not saying that some crap monitor from Dell is or should be the standard. My standards for an iPad are way higher. And I have exchanged my iPad 2 for one with tolerable leakage (scroll back a few pages for mine.) But "tolerable" and "perfect" are not the same thing IMHO.

Proves the point that most have light/ back leak. Not a big issue

My apple store experience: 04/13 went through 2 new boxes only to find both iPads had bleeding issues. Although both seemed better than my original, it was obvious when holding the iPads under the table away from the bright lights. I grabbed what I thought was the best of the three only to find a dead pixel when I got home. I recommend waiting a bit longer for those seeking a replacement. Good luck to all! Please continue to post your experiences in getting the issue resolved.

Glue/bleed

I think I have found a way to determine if the backlight bleeding on your iPad is glue or REAL backlight bleed

Get a black background

Hold where the bleed is and press down where the bleed is

If nothing happens that means it's glue (my iPad's light bleed that I bought on the 13th of April is mostly that even thought I don't have much bleed as it is now)

If the bleed gets worse when you press down it's real backlight bleed

This goes along with 2 things 1. Apple says it's the glue (which is partially the truth) and 2. A lot of people on MR say that some of there bleed is gone

Hope I'm right and that means soon I will have a almost no-bleed iPad

Hey guys,

I've been following this thread almost since the beginning but can finally share my own experience.
I bought my 1st Ipad black 64GB AT&T at local Target store. When I brought it home I've immediately noticed the light leakage issue in corners and along the screen. I considered it to be a minor in comparison to pictures I've seen posted here from others.
However I also had a small dent on the back of the Ipad which made me go to Apple store and complain about it. Genius took it in the back and compared it to other samples (probably returned Ipads) and to my suprise refused to exchange mine. He told me that they stopped doing exchanges as they now consider this issue as normal and that the one I had was one of the better ones.
I was so pissed off that I returned to Target store the same day and asked for money back (since they were already out of stock and couldn't exchange it for a new one)
2 weeks later my online order arrived. What can I say, light bleed was even worse than on my 1st one + dead pixel on top.
Took it back to Apple again and thanks to a dead pixel they did exchange it this time for a new one.
I'm happy now, have almost perfect Ipad, not 100% but 99% light bleed is gone.
This just confirmes what has been said here many times, this is a quality issue which Apple must address.
For those of you who have the same problem, do not settle, keep returning, exchanging until you get almost perfect Ipad like I got just today...

Good luck !

Arghhh

Hey, I phoned up Applecare as my iPad has backlight bleeding as well. I asked if Apple were aware of them problem and was told that they are.The Applecare man asked me if he should make an appointment for me in my local Apple Store but I said that I have read of people having replaced their iPad 2's multiple times just to have the same problem, and that this is too much hassle. I then asked how long I should wait to go into my Apple store for a replacement, and was told 4 months! (I'm like woah, by then the iPad 3 will almost be out) but I plan to wait a month or two and phone up to see if the problem is sorted as the problem shouldn't take so long to fix. C'mon APPLE!! (I know they don't read this, lol)

I am sure there are some people with no issues, but many people like me won't notice it or think its normal. I wouldn't have really noticed it if I hadn't read it on these forums. But there must be some people with perfect iPads!

Hope this helps!!

i had bleeding with my ipad 2 and apple replaced it with a new one

AND??? Does the new one bleed? My wife and I both want to get one, but we WILL NOT until we are reasonably certain that this problem is PAST. Saw the comment above that it might take 4 MONTHS yet (ugh!); sure hope not. I've been waiting for one of these since the Stevenator introduced the iPhone in January 2007! Yep, I've been waiting THAT LONG for multi-touch. A few more months is a PITA, but I guess I can hold out.... Sigh..... :(

how's this?
to be honest it looks worse than it did when i first got it..

What is the brightness level set at? Is it higher than when you normally use it ? My iPad 1 is perfect, but if I turn the brightness up to 100%, I get light bleed on a black background. Since using the device @ 100% brightness would cause permanent blindness, I feel it is a brightness issue, and not a manufactoring defect. Yes, there are some out there with legitimate back light bleeding, but I feel that the issue is being blown out of proportion.

the pic is admittedly at 100%, but it starts becoming visible at around 50

Not at all. My Dell 24" monitor has virtually zero light bleed. Far nicer than my iPad 2.

I'm gonna live with it on the iPad because it seems like this is the best Apple can manage at this price point.

Kinda sad it's the only real "bleeder" out of all my displays however...

So far with a little under 48 hrs of usage I can say that my backlight bleed is getting better and I plan on keeping my current iPad unless they can completely fix the issue (which I really don't think can be dome because of how the iPad 2 is constructed)

I have to say my iPad is one of the best screens I have seen on this forum and the bleed can only be seen on a black background with 50+ brightness and a dark room

Also iPad 1's had this issue also (I do not own one but I have had other people test)

This is the only problem with mine and it is not that bad so I am happy with the one I have

I ordered a White 16GB Wifi yesterday, expected delivery may 5th. I will post what happens then to see if apple started fixing the problem only way to know is if the ones being delivered are getting better

Absolutely. Please post when you get it to let us know.

If a problem exists, regardless of severity it exists. I can understand people wanting a flawless product for the money. It's expected from Apple. This is why we buy their products.

Agreed, but I feel that with most people, the problem is there is too much brightness adjustment, and that can be fixed in firmware. The people that are saying that their monitors and TVs don't have light bleed, are they sure they have LED back lit displays, and when they turn the brightness up to max, is it as bright as the iPad's display ? (Yall do turn up your other monitors to 100 brightness, right ?)

I have seen several post in this thread where people claim they don't see any back light bleed, but ask how do they test for it, they then come back on and say they have bleeding and inquire about exchanges. These guys don't have back light bleed. My iPad 1 will show bleeding at brightnesses that require a wielder's hood. Since I don't want to damage my eyes, I don't use the screen at that brightness, (I use minimum 95% of the time.) therefore, I consider my iPad perfect and bleed free. Really, what more do you want.

My iPad 1 has the standard blb along the edges. I never notice it since my brightness is always at the lowest setting (in fact, I originally did that to prevent/slow down blb) so I can live with that.

What does bother me is about 2 months ago two spots on the screen started showing bleeding on light-to-white colors. The spots are about where your thumbs would reach if you were holding the iPad in portrait with your hands at the center of either side, and they are slowly growing. It's a day one 3g model so I have until the end of April before my 1 yr AC expires.

Guys, I need advice. This is mine at 100% in a pitch black room. I notice it when watching films/youtube at 50%. I have to travel to another city to swap it and its next to impossible to test it inshop. The photo makes it look maybe 5% worse than it is in person...what do you think?
