this is some what good news:

Quality control problems with LCD panels from LG Display may have contributed to the prolonged shortage of the iPad 2. According to the report from Digitimes, early batches of the 9.7-inch panels supplied by LG had a light leak issue that limited LG's ability to meet demand. As a result, LG only produced 3.2 million panels in the first quarter of 2011, a figure that trails the four million panels produced by Samsung. This report corroborates an earlier report from IHS iSuppli that blamed the iPad 2 shortage on an unknown manufacturing problem with LCDs.

LG has reportedly fixed this light leakage problem and is back on track to ramp up production this spring. Chimei Innolux is also prepping to contribute to the supply of IPS panels for the iPad 2 starting in May. If both these manufacturers can boost production, then perhaps iPad 2 supply constraints can be eased in this current quarter.

Well I don't have high hopes for this unit but you never know. I'm an early adopter for the most part but I have to say when iPad 3 comes out I'm waiting and reading the forums before I buy.

Not sure why I didn't think of this first but I love this perspective and will be doing the SAME thing... when iPad 3 is announced instead of hopping in line for retina/3D/whatever display I will have no temptation to buy early. There is NO WAY I'm going through this again and will let others beta test iPad 3 that time around.

Ok folks so I just got my replacement from FedEx here at work. Came in the familiar brown box. It was in a pouch and has the cellophane wrap that the new units have when you buy. Checked it over and the case etc appears perfect. Well as perfect as any of the other units I've gotten from local Apple Stores. No dents, dings, or marks that are bothersome. Home button fine and no weird glass issues.

Now onto the big show. SHE'S A KEEPER!!!!!

Minor to little light leak only at 100%. I only call it minor light leak because this is what I would have expected from any unit. Anything below 100% brightness there is no and I repeat no light leak showing in a fully pitch black room. Checked for dust and dead pixels and there are none.

60% on top
100% on bottom

Again pitch black room. :D

If we have this issue, what is the best course of action? Should we call, or just go into an Apple store?

Yeah it's a good one. I shipped my defect unit on Wed. I can't believe how fast they turned it around.

They have ordered me a new one twice now before they have even got the old one back. The company who collect the old one will email me in a day or so to collect.

My last replacement came Tuesday just gone and i sent the old one back the same day.

I just sent mine back for a refund and then ordered again instead of sending it in to the repair centre and then them shipping me a replacement as last time I sent it into the repair centre they wasted my time by saying that they could not duplicate the issue and sent me the original iPad 2 back as it was so I had to then take it to an Apple store when I received it back and was told by the genius he has no idea how they could not duplicate the issue as it was blatantly obvious as you could even see the light bleed in normal lighting.

Depends where you are really. If you got it online i would go that route, if its an Apple Store go back their but they may not have any (in the UK they are like gold dust) Apple seem to be OK about it though they must have had a lot back.

Just hope the 3rd one is fine if not thats it i give up for now and will be just go for a refund and wait a month or so... or even try and see if any of the big chain stores have any as its quicker and easier to take it back to them.

Is it standard that the iPad be manufactured a the day they ship it? Cause when i called to see if i could boost my standard shipping the apple rep said that it was literally impossible to do it because the certain batch i had ordered from wasnt being manufactured till the 18 of may(the day it says it is going to ship). this standard?

reason i post it in the backlight bleeding thread is because i wonder if i'll be getting one of the newly fixed ipads

Is there a way to find out what panel our iPads have without opening them?

the only thing on the box that differentiates from each ipad is the serial numbers...

i don't know how u can tell if it's an LG or samsung panel from the serial numbers.

I'm on my fourth iPad 2 now - all due to light leakage. This last one, which was replaced through AppleCare via FedEx, has almost zero leakage, but a much warmer display than I prefer. Not sure if I should risk swapping it again to try to get a cooler one... But it definitely bugs me :(

Mine has really really really minor light leakage that I can't even see unless I turn the brightness all the way up--at that point it's barely visible even in a dark room.

HOWEVER, I did find a couple of pieces of dust under my display. It started out as one piece and now I think there are 3. I imagine it will just get worse and worse. If I do an exchange I want to make sure I get one of the good displays.

I'm kind of wondering when it's safe to go and attempt an exchange. I want one with a good screen, no dust, and no cosmetic damage. I had lots of iPhone 4 refurbs and every single one of them had cosmetic problems.
