I had returned an iPad for a dead pixel. The screen was brilliant white. The replacement was a brand new retail. I opened at the store to check for dead pixels and saw none. What i did noticed was the screen somehow didn't look that brilliant. Was too happy at that time to really care.

Got home and saw the digusting pee colored screen. Also darker along the left and right border of the screen. Makes reading on white background unpleasant.

Went back to the store and compared it to a genius iPad. What a world of difference. His is bright white and mine dullish yellow. Got a new replacement and now got a brilliant bluish screen. Happiness ended quickly as bottom left of screen has the same dullish yellowing on white white the rest of the screen is bright and white. Argh. But this screen is clearly different from the entire yellowish screen. The new one has a 2x2 dull yellow on white on bottom left. Will exchange or get a refund later.

Oh backlight bleeding bad on all models. I learned to live with that. They all have it.
A yellow spot is simply drying adhesive. Give it a few days.

Got it last Wednesday. Been 9 days. Yellowing has not faded, in fact seems to be getting worst. The screen looks very uneven, very bright white top right, medium center, medium bottom right, medium top left, and very dull bottom left. Reading feels weird having to adjust to brightness levels going from left to right. I'm packing it up and heading out to apple.

Slowly but surely.. looks like we may be getting there.. I'm still just checking in and seeing how brown-boxes are doing. Maybe I just wait til' this thread hits 100 pages to trade my iPad 2.

It's so unfortunate as the device really is amazing device. I have apps I don't even want to look at on my iPhone anymore as the iPad version blows them away. It is close to replacing my Kindle while indoors (I live in CA so in general the Kindle is safe). Hopefully soon the brown-boxes get more and more reliable with regards to no screen issues.

Agreed. I just want to enjoy it but I can't look past the screen issues. Maybe because I'm a video guy. I dunno . . .

I agree with you completely. Think about it, the device is basically ONE BIG SCREEN so major flaws with the absolute primary component are unacceptable and Apple agrees. Bleed, dead-pixels, chunks of dust under the screen, etc are all things that take away from the primary component of this device. I'm done debating the apologists and am not going to argue %s or how I use my device. I will say I think there are some that I have seen that think they have the issue that don't. I have seen a few "light-leak" screens I would have never returned. However, I felt 100% justified returning for light-leak, a screen separating at the home button and a huge chunk of dust/dirt under the screen.

I am happy for all those that are completely unaware of this issue if they have it as that is all a customer can ask for, to be happy with their purchase and feel like they received what they paid for. In the case of many here, we are having to be a bit more patient and understanding to get there. Ignorance truly can be bliss.

Got new iPad retail exchange. Got bluish screen with no dead pixels. White balance very good with slight yellowing of bottom left corner about 1 x 1, significantly better than the model I returned. Backlight bleeding is still there but not as much. iOS already at 4.3.2 so no need to update this time. Not perfect, but very happy nonetheless.

So I went to the genius bar today concerning the light bleed issue, the guy took my iPad to examine it and then told me that my iPad was "to spec" and would not be replaced.

be honest with me, does this look acceptable to you?

Call Apple. That looks like crap.

Just dropped my iPad off at The UPS store. Hopefully I'll have it back in 3-5. I'm hoping for a keeper. :)

That looks like my old iPad 2 which the Genius person said was out of spec.

My questioning to the Genius would be what scale or tool do they use to determine what is within spec vs out of spec? And can I see this tool?

If no tool, I would ask if they are going by THEIR opinion? Do they have any photos to go by? And if there is basically nothing official, request to speak with a manager and have the manager check it themself to see if they concur with the employee.....and if they concur, what are THEY basing this on?

Bottom line is, and I would elaborate, numerous spotlighting all along the side of the device along with corners shining brightly to YOU is unacceptable. According to the return/exchange policy if we are not satisfied....etc.

Good luck

I had one he genius look me straight in the face and say he didn't see it. I smiled but he knew what I was thinking.

My thing is if this was in spec Apple wouldn't replace them like some sort of pez dispenser.

on the right is my replaced one. It is alot more pronounced in person. I'm worried that if I swap this one out I'll have lightbleed on the next one.....

Last picture shows my replacement's display. There is a tiny spot in one of the corners, but it's a non issue. What do I do :( When I look at the whites on the older ipad its night and day.

I can't tell, post a pic of normal usage. Do you see it when viewing a video, using an app, ect...???

That yellow screen would bother you more than the backlight bleeding. Certainly bothered me enough to return it. Exchange it, now that you know the screen is yellow, it will always bother you. I had the yellow screen and it looked old and dull, lifeless.

Who stares at a black screen in a dark room like that? I have some bleeding on mine too but there's always something on the screen (facebook, naked women or whatever) so I never notice it. Does the bleeding bother you when you're actually using it?

Picked up my brown box replacement today. Same amount of light bleeding on the iPad I had swapped it for. The first iPad I swapped out had less bleeding than the replacement.

SO - my first iPad had considerable light bleeding - it's replacement was worse (brand new, in box, straight from Foxconn), and now the brown box replacement (and I'll note the "FINAL" replacement) is just as bad as the second.

Guess I should have kept my original. I was told by management that no more replacements would be issued. I will receive a refund if I decide to try and swap this ****ing thing again.

I don't understand why I should settle for a product that has an obvious screen defect, when the screen is the primary component of this device. I watch TV, and movies at night, and at any percentage of brightness, the yellow blobs on the corner of each screen stand out. If my flat screen LCD HDTV had this issue, you can bet your ass I'd be getting a new one.

Guess I'm stuck with this, or my money back...I'm upset as an avid apple consumer to have to settle with these options, and am even more upset at apples lack of QC or acknowledgement of this issue.

For the record, management advised their new policy on this issue was ONE swap, or a refund. This was my second swap (so in total 3ipads)...all with the same issue, with the first being the least apparent.

Will be writing a formal letter of complaint to Apple. I don't expect anything, but I simply want to express my concern with QC, on an almost $1,000 electronic device.

Apple is known for their excellence in product design and customer service, but this is just ridiculous, and unacceptable. Am I being OCD and neurotic? Maybe...but I have expectations on electronics that cost upwards of $1000, which like all of us I a very sure work VERY hard for.

When you are on a plane at night and they turn off all the lights, it's dark enough for the light bleed to be annoying when watching movies, especially dark scenes.

I do. I stare at black screen every night. Basically every time i watch a moive that is widescreen. And the yellowing would really bother me, thats why i am one happy ipad 1 owner with a perfect screen.

I was seriously considering swapping out my brown box, very slight light bleed, but dead pixel iPad out for another replacement. However after seeing so many of you getting one with bad light bleed, I'm inclined to just hold onto this dead pixel one until the light bleeds get less common.

A single dead pixel can be annoying, but not as annoying as light bleed issues when watching movies.

That looks terrible. i took mine to the Apple store (about half as bad as yours) and the guy barely looked at it and swapped it with a brown-box special and it's perfect.

It sounds like the genius himself was the tool

Just order a new one and return the old one for a refund when you get the new one. Hopefully you're within the 30 day window and you'll get lucky.
