Barclays on iPhone 12 Lineup: No EarPods in Box and Possibly Not Even a Charger

They could start out soft and offer without charger as an option. Then drop it completely in a year or two.

Most retailers would probably be positive to the change since they could offer 3rd party chargers with better margin as an upsell.

I didn't even use the last charger at all. Just kinda a waste. I haven't used the earbuds for years. I have like 3 sets still in the packaging. I charge via the wireless and use AirPods. I keep a pair of the wired buds around just incase I need Tham but as of yet, they haven't even come out of the packaging.

Nobody has a spare USB-C charger. Apple continued to foist USB-A chargers for 4 years after Macs had switched to USB-C. Brave.

If they want to include just the cable, it should be USB-A so I can use it with the 20 existing Apple chargers I own.

I would like it if they shave off the retail cost of the charger if the customer wants a box with just the phone. That would be fair. Charging the prices they do and not including the earphones and charger would be sad. They think everyone on the planet owns an iPhone now? Earphones and charger are included to make the package complete, nothing else. Personally, I would appreciate the earphones as well. The cost is factored in the price, and if they remove things they deliver, they should subtract the retail price of the earphones from the price of the iPhone.

I remember reading about a similar law but I can’t remember if it was a certain US state or another country. The law of course was to keep people from holding the phone up to the ear while driving since hands free is the law in some places.
Driving with headphones in seems dangerous too? Driving while wearing headphones is actually illegal where I live (as part of distracted driving laws).

Nothing is free. If they include something in the package that I don't need, well I've paid for it somehow.
I prefer to choose the model that I want.
I already have chargers. Perhaps I'll buy a wireless one next time!

I heard a rumour the iPhone box will not contain an iPhone. The box will be empty. No phone, no charger, and no earbuds.

Yes, finally skipping a generation of new iPhones to focus on stuff like when Apple made computing software, like

putting a column browser into the TV app in MacOS Big Sur so we can distinguish purchased movies from purchased TV episodes in list view by some way other than changing the default app to TV from Quicktime Player and double clicking on our choice after browsing through folders in the darn Finder... ? Sounds fine to me for the first outing of a production version of Big Sur.

On the other hand I was rather looking forward to seeing what the iPhone 12 would bring. Empty box versus no box sounds like an extreme set of guesses. I'll take the non-empty box, don't care about notch/no-notch, let the orders be choiceful: either you get a charger or earpods and they come packaged separately.

iPhone 13 no Phone in the box just Apple stickers, only £1299. I know they like to simplify but the more for less approach is going a bit to far now! They stole the decent operating system and ports from the MacBook now we left with macOS Big Silly running on a macPAD

Exactly. Who would ship a phone without any way to charge it? Think of people who are buying their first phone and don't already have a collection of chargers. That's a stupid thing to report.
I personally don't care or need a charger. I have so many of them. And I have Qi chargers at work and home. I hope Apple gets to a point where the iPhone is sold as is, and you can "add" whatever else you need. So many people have chargers and cables, it's a waste. I also hope they expand this with the watch. I am happy they now let you chose any band with the watch. I now want them to stop offering bands. I have enough, and don't need anymore.

I don't have a problem with it. I'd guess that upwards of 90% of people buying a phone these days have a USB-wall adapter already, and it's only $20 to buy one separately if you don't (which you can definitely afford if you're spending $1200+ on a phone) and it reduces the waste of sending people stuff they don't need.

Then at least lower the price by $100. It won't matter much to me since I have an abundance of chargers, but not great for those buying their first iPhone

That would be most unfortunate. If USB-C was more popular, that might be appropriate, but it's not. Adding a cable, and no power supply is like giving a fish a bicycle. And if people have to cough up another $30 (or more) for a 'special' USB-C power supply, and some having to, no doubt, go out and get one on a second trip; it's not going to inspire much love.

This is great! Whether people want to admit it or not they're paying for the EarPods and charger. Because they can't see it separately in the price they think it's "free". Also I don’t need another pair of wired EarPods to throw it in my junk box eventually ending up in a landfill and the same goes for a charger.

It's possible. When you checkout, "Do you need a power adaptor? Add one for $20". That would be a good move for the masses that simply don't need one.

But if they are going to ship without pods and power the price needs to reflect that. Maybe this is their way of getting the unit price down, which I would be a fan of.

Motorola did it many years ago with the Moto E so this is not groundbreaking cheapness. That was a cheap phone. Apple can probably innovate this move by keeping the prices high and shaming disgruntled customers by claiming it's doing it for the environment while selling products like the airpods that can't have the battery replaced and thus increase their life cycle.
