I can speak only for myself, but the included charger always goes straight into my drawer of unused chargers, never to see the light of day again. If that's typical, then it is a significant source of waste.
But that's you. There are a lot of people out there buying their first smartphones.
Apple pride itself for including the basic necessities in the box. Excluding the charger, or even the Earpods would draw so many negativity.

No one I know needs another charger. It's 2020 and most people aren't on their first smartphone.
Apple doesn't only sell iPhones in your county.

When buying the phone they should give you the option to buy a set of apple ear/air/pro or air pods studios if they are out by the release date at a bit of a discount. Both drives iPhone and headphone sales, and customers feel less concerned about not getting headphones with the phone. Win Win.

If your country is just getting smartphones in 2020 just buy the charger separate. Why make everyone else in the world that has a charger buy another one creating more environmental damage.

Give people an option to buy a steeply discounted charging brick with a phone purchase, but don't include it for free. If it's free, people will take it. If it's $5, it's not enough to whine about and not worth buying if you have 10 already.

Apple is widely expected to release four new iPhone 12 models later this year, and ahead of time, analysts at British bank Barclays have outlined their expectations for the devices based on discussions with multiple Apple suppliers.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors, the Barclays analysts said that iPhone 12 models will not come with EarPods in the box, in line with a prediction shared by Ming-Chi Kuo last month. Oddly enough, the analysts also heard that iPhone 12 models might not ship with a power adapter of any kind, leaving only a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box.

While there would certainly be environmental benefits to Apple not including a power adapter with the hundreds of millions of iPhones it sells each year, such a move would obviously be inconvenient for customers without a spare USB-C charger. Apple's basic 5W power adapter can be purchased separately for $19, while the 18W power adapter included with iPhone 11 Pro models can be purchased for $29.

Earlier this week, the anonymous Twitter user Mr. White shared photos of a 20W power adapter that he suggested will be included with iPhone 12 models, which clearly contradicts with what Barclays analysts are hearing.

Barclays estimates that mass production of iPhone 12 models is four to six weeks behind schedule compared to a usual year. The analysts believe that Apple will still announce the new lineup in September, but at least some models might not be available to order until October or November, as was the case with the iPhone X and iPhone XR in recent years.

The analysts expect the two higher-end iPhone 12 Pro models to feature a triple-lens camera system with a LiDAR Scanner, first introduced on the iPad Pro. This would pave the way for new augmented reality experiences.

Barclays also said that it has heard about a potential iPad Pro refresh later this year, but it has no further details right now.

Last, the analysts expect third-generation AirPods to launch in early 2021.

Barclays analysts have a mixed track record in relation to Apple rumors. Their accurate predictions have included True Tone coming to the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, the removal of the headphone jack adapter with iPhone XS and iPhone XR models, and the removal of 3D Touch on all iPhone 11 models, while they were incorrect about the iPhone XS possibly having a smaller notch and the base iPhone 11 having 4x4 MIMO.

A lot iphone owners don't have an 18w charger and most definitely could use one. Me included.
Buy one? Why have everyone to include the people who don't need one buy one? This is one of the reasons we have so much e-waste.

For the prices they are currently charging they should include AirPods as standard in the box already.

I'm convinced if Steve Jobs were still around, that would have happened.. It will never happen with miser Tim Cook

The idea that apple is “ruined” because They stopped shipping the annoying clamshell plastic case that everyone threw in a drawer because it was too hard to wrap the cord around it every time you put your EarPods away is perhaps the silliest thing I’ve read on the internet this week.

Please re-read my post. Nowhere in my post did I state Apple was ruined over that individual issue. It's merely a single example of rampant cheapness effected by Tim Cook that continues unabated.

Why does everyone say "If Steve Jobs was around he would have done ____". Steve Jobs might have done it or might not. Unless you guys have an Ouija board and are somehow asking him from the grave how would you know?

I definitely would find this an issue if I don't get a charger with a phone. I just got a Samsung S20 Plus and it came with a charger which I was happy with!

Earphones were super nice too.

To Goodwill? No one I know wants wired headphones. No one I know uses wired headphones.

Wow. I use an Audeze LCD-1 and I definitely can tell you that I use wired headphones. Planar magnetic BT headphones are rare.

One doesn't have to be a wizard to have an understanding of Steve Jobs and his business philosophy as it relates to Apple. It's not like there's a shortage of source material regarding that.

Steve Jobs ALWAYS prioritized building the BRAND over picking up every loose dime. Steve Jobs was always about elevating the experience. He understood that's the key for building brand loyalty and long term growth. To include AirPods with the iPhone would be the fulfillment of eliminating another wired device (Earpods) for a wireless device (AirPods). Wires were a pet peeve of his, and I think he would have leapt at the chance to be rid of another wired device element at the first opportunity.

Steve Jobs liked to underpromise and overdeliver. And he would have been praised as a visionary for doing it. Steve Jobs was about pushing towards the future, he NEVER shied away from doing that.

Nobody said anybody needs another charger.

You should work on reading comprehension. Nowhere in my post did I state Apple was ruined over that individual issue. It's merely a single example of rampant cheapness effected by Tim Cook that continues unabated.
If that’s an example, the rest of your list must be fascinating.

If this ends up being true, well, I’d buy the iPhone 12 or 13 because it will be a great device with now an excellent operating system. But this would be an extremely ugly movement.

$19 for the 5W charging plug, without a cable even. I don't know what's sadder, Apple having the nerve to charge that much, or the person who would actually buy it.

How about 2 cables then - a lighting to USB-A and lighting to USB-C. Many of us have tons of charging blocks but they are USB-A (unless latest iPhones) and places that have charging ports are almost all USB-A. OR keep things as they were.

Everyone and their grandmother knows this rumor is completely bogus, and borderline probably shouldn’t even be reported for ‘news‘.
