Think that must be the reason for mine

I downloaded go go gadget and never realised it was in my notification center...does that affect battery life even if you don't get any notifications from that app?

I don't know about that. I thought they only ran when you opened it? Thats my experience of the notification pull down.

but I just found somethign new. I was browsing on mygiffgaff app (I'm in the uk) and suddenly I had location arrow pop up. So I went to settings and nothing has a purple arrow next to it. so what ever just used it is not listed. And if that is happening when I'm not looking at my phone, then that is going to drain the battery and leave no trail.

Seems its not so simple after all and something is hiding on our phones, well mine atleast because i just saw it.

Heard a few people saying it made things better, but majority seems to be same or worse. Rumors of 5.0.2 around the corner so maybe hold on for that, esp since you seem to be getting alot of use out of it.

It's made it better for me, I tend to have around 50% at the end of the working day unless I play games which is better than the iP4.

So i finally had my first issues with my 4s battery over the past 2 days. From what i can tell my battery has been lasting me pretty much the same as my 3GS did. I can get through the work day with some light games, and surfing, a good amount of iMessages, and maybe switching wifi on and off once or twice.

Anyways over the past 2 nights i've let the battery get pretty low before i plugged it in which is right before i get in bed at around 10:30pm (1% and around 13%) which is MUCH longer than i got out of my 3gs. I usually had to plug that in by around 5pm.

Well i've been waking up and my phone is saying its charged right around the 95% mark. Yesterday was 95% and this morning was 96%. Now i will say that i did have a radio station streaming app playing all night. For whatever reason on my 3gs it tended to shut it self off at some point in the night and my 4s doesn't.

But being plugged in you would think that it wouldn't affect the battery at all, even if it was streaming music all night (maybe)

Anyways i decided to do a hard reset this morning and it was at 95% when i did the reset, and 98% when it woke up, then went to 99%.

I've since charged it here at work to 100% so i guess i'll just monitor it throughout the day.

If anyone has any clues or is this just another case of 5.0.1 not working(maybe i shouldn't be streaming all night lol) thanks!

As far as I know it is because the phone stops charging after getting to 100% and being in the charger for X amount of time. This is to not damage the device or something.

If you had kept it in the charger at some point it would start to charge again and reach 100% for the second time that charge cycle. Atleat that happened to me:)

I'm done trying to figure this out. I took my phone off the dock at 4am and I am in the low 20's already with minor usage. The frustrating thing is it appears to be variable.

Waits for next update.

You also checked System Services, right?

As I said in an earlier post I was gonna try to reformat to 5.0.1 in different ways to see if it helped on my battery performance and I have done it 4-5 times now with no luck.

Every time I have chosen the following:

-English language, norwegian region
-Locations on
-Automatically send off
-iCloud off
-Set up as new iPhone

So, first three times I used my appe ID. Same thing every time. Drained 2% battery within the first 30mins on standby without me touching the phone after setting it up other than turning on battery %.

Fourth time I set it up using standard region and language choices so English language and american region. No difference.

Fifth time I chose to set up using new Apple ID and I made a new ID. No difference.

I realise that battery wasnt calibratet blablabla but I am sure nomatter how bad the calibration is a 2% drop in standby is not normal in a 30min range. And since this is pretty much the same I've seen when calibrated I think the results can be trusted. I also made sure to not reformat again untill 2% had dropped since the first drop could come quick if the battery was on the cusp of a drop and thus would have dropped one even if the battery was "fixed".

Might try different types of reformating and combination of choices later. Maybe try 5.0.

Just to add some more data points to this, I had 3 4S's (launch day pre-orders on Sprint). They each had 3 different battery performance levels. 1 was unusable bad (100% to dead in 6 hours with no use), 1 was usable but not good (3-3.5 hours use, 10-12 hours standby), and the last was "fine" (no complaints, seemed to get about what Apple advertised).

Sent them all back and switched to ATT (unrelated reason for switching - Sprint was averaging 50-150kbps after the iPhone launched, ATT is giving me 1.5-2mbps) with 3 new 4S's. By the time the return was done and the new devices arrived 5.0.1 was out. With the new hardware and the 5.0.1 they all seem fine. Better than the 2 HTC/Android and 1 Palm WebOS device they replaced.

Can't say for certain wether it was the new hardware or the 5.0.1 update, but I suspect that the worst device had a hardware problem (it was running all the time, no standby at all, very hot, restoring it, changing settings, etc had no effect). I think the middle device was affected by the software issue that 5.0.1 would have fixed, simply because I was able to improve the battery life by changing settings (still nowhere what was advertised). The new hardware and software together fixed this (note: I setup as new, then did a restore of my old 4S backup and it's still all good).

Also, my Mom has a 4S (ATT) which replaced a 3GS. She said the 5.0.1 bumped her battery life from "acceptable" to "pertty good" (on par with her 3GS when it was new).

Very odd, i did not even update to 5.0.1 and my battery life has gone up a bit.

I noticed it lasting through the day without a charge. Last night I was showing 6 hours usage and it still had 20 percent.

At the moment, I took it off the charger at 7:30am, now at 1pm I am at 68% with over 2 hours of usage. Not too bad!

Mine off charge at 8am again this morning, 100%, been using 3G, Edge and GPRS majority of day, pretty heavy usage. Loads of texts, Facebook, twitter, bit of siri and one phone call. Its now 9:51pm and on 47%. Think its definitely got to how it should.

I've been getting truly excellent battery life on my new 4S, much better than many others here. I've been trying to figure out why, and wonder if it's iCloud related?

I haven't signed up for iCloud yet, as I am a MobileMe subscriber whose ancient iMac won't run Lion, so until I buy a new Mac, I'm having to leave iCloud alone. Could this be a factor?

Is everyone else having problems already on iCloud?

I have reformatted my phone many times and tried it without activating iCloud, no difference. That however does not mean that deactivating iCloud can't help others.

Today I even tried to restore onto my phone my friends iPhone 4 backup that does not have battery problems with no luck. Still drained 2-3% per hour.

Ah, ok so for an update to my previous post. It seems as if 5.0.1 has actually worsened my battery life.

~30-45 mins calling
40 minutes of gaming
tons of wifi browsing
few amount of picture taking/instagram
~30 minutes of total siri usage (reminders/calendars)
push is off, icloud is enabled
only the diagnostic/usage and iAd location services disabled

with 5.0 I averaged 7-7.5 hours usage and 1 day 9 hours usage

with 5.0.1 with similar usage I averaged 4-5 hours usage with 20-24 hours standby

looks like I shouldn't have updated; hopefully 5.0.2 will fix this

After waiting for a jailbreak and it not coming, I decided to just update to 5.0.1. and see if it fixed my battery life. I posted a screenshot before where I was getting an abysmal 4+ hours of usage and only 8 hours of standby before it was at 1%, but after the update, it seems to have actually fixed it. I'm currently at 2 hours of usage and still have 84% battery left.

I hope it keeps up.

I posted earlier that I tried reformating the phone 4-5 times and also tried loading a backup of my friends iPhone 4 without batt. problems onto my 4S and still had problems. Well after that I did another reformat to get my old backup onto my phone. Some confusion in my backups so first loaded a backup of the phone just after a fresh install of 5.0.1, reformated again and loaded the last backup I took before starting all of this.

So after loading that backup (which I took after days with battery problems) I charged the phone to 100% and disconnected it from the computer. Before doing that I thought, screw it if the phone drains 5% an hour nomatter what settings I have I might aswell put them all on so I went in and turned on all the location settings->system settings that I had turned off (only had compass calibration on before).

Since then I have now had two solid hours of standby before it dropped from 100% to 99% compared to what I've seen from this phone and the 4S I sent back where I have consistently lost 4-5% an hour nomatter what I did.

If this keeps up it means my phone has magically fixed itself or gotten fixed after countless of reformats and throwing different backups onto it.

I have no idea how it happened as it seemed to drain every time I reformatted it and tried something different. Not holding my breath though, hard draining could return at any moment and I have seen alittle better batterylife at 100% and 1% before but nothing like this. 2hrs of standby for each percentage means 200hrs and is pretty darn good. Expecting it to turn on me at any moment though considering how this 'fix' just appeared out of thin air!

*edit*

And while writing this post on my mac it dropped to 98%, so 2hrs from 100 to 99 and then 15mins from 99 to 98. Might just be the calibration of the batt or something then. I'll report how it acts the next few hrs.

*edit 2*

The 'normal' batterydrain has now comminced and I have lost the usual 5% an hour after the two first hours of 1%loss total.

my battery dropped about 6% overnight...normally only drains 4% but over the past few days drained 8% overnight which was odd. Something is running as i went to bed with 5 hours, 40 minutes usage and woke up to 6 hours, 1 minute usage...

not sure why this is the case.

i did get 1 day, 20 hours standby though.

This thread is slowing way down on posts.

People are either fatigued about the issue or folks have resolved their issues/learning to live with the situation.

i think we've gone round the houses with "what could it be" so i think ppl are just tired of it and pray for a fast update to resolve it

If they have 1/2 a brain they'll know that Apple is working to fix it as they said they are and there'll be software updates sooner than later to address it.

I was on WiFi all day yesterday and when I went to bed it was on 15%. I forgot to dock it before going to bed and when I woke up it was totally DEAD!:(

Hmmm…

OK, so after 5.01 I saw improved battery life but now it's just draining sitting there untouched and I haven't changed anything since.

Are you guys that are seeing huge battery drains at night checking Usage times?

I've had great battery since day 1 but the other day I noticed my battery was draining like crazy. Checked my usage times and it was really high. I guess some app was hanging.

I closed all the apps in the tray and restarted the phone. Usage times are still equaling standby without touching it. Finally had to do a restore and now I'm back to normal. I wonder what was causing the hang up? I'm in airplane mode with only Wifi on currently because I'm overseas for school.

Just used my iPhone for 45 minutes music in gym, still 100%

Gotta love having no buggy push connections draining your battery:rolleyes::apple:
