You can turn off 3G Data this way. Settings/General/Network/Cellular Data/OFF.

That will give you voice and SMS (turn off imessage too). You will not have Edge data either. But if you then turn WiFI on in your home, you will have data there.

You can then test whether your weak data signal is the issue. Of course, you will still have 3G voice. If that is a concern turn that off too. Of course all of this is just to test what is draining your battery, not a way to operate.

thanks bro, but i allready checked all that. That is definetly the problem, there is a huge thread on the apple support forums about this.
And turning cellular data off is rediculous, i need to turn it back on every time in leave the house again then. And also cellular data isnt the same as 3G. When turning off cellular data it still connects to 3G and then back to edge constantly. Data isnt the problem, the network between which it switches is!

How can I turn of 3G voice?? Cheers :)

A simple turn of 3G switch, like there always was would solve mine, and for thousands of others the problems!!

This doesn't work for me! I've had it with this seriously.

I plugged out my phone at 5am (100%) and went back to sleep. Woke up at 830am and checked it again.

2hrs 40mins of usage and 3hrs 30mins of standby. (90%)

WTF!

I had the same phantom usage time increases with my 4s running 5.0, 5.0.1, and 5.1b. I turned off all Notifications and it seemed to have solved the phantom usage problem for one day, but the problem came back.

So I reset all contents and settings, didn't install any applications other than the ones come with the phone, turned off all notifications, locations services & diagnostics send, and turned off Siri. Basically, there shouldn't have been anything running. Yet, I saw usage time increasing steadily - I checked every hour. Out of desperation, I took the phone to Genius, and they gave me a replacement 4s. No more phantom usage time increases and my battery usage is "normal". The guy at the Genius bar told me that my water damage sensor was triggered, but other than that he couldn't find any anomaly with the battery. I believe there are bad iPhone 4Ss out there. Some to try if you have phantom usage time issue and there wasn't any other solution (reset or what not).

I did the exact same thing. Restored with practically nothing and usage was still increasing. Exchanged it for a new set two days ago and still having the same problem.

So sick of this. Looks like I'll have to exchange it again.

Just got back from the GeniAss bar. As expected they said "we need more information", "prove to me we released a sucky phone" (I paraphrased. Those red monkeys were a lot more civilised than that). So they have instructed me to try out viewfly's instructions.. drain to 0%, recharge to 100% and then monitor. I will try that just for chuckles :)

In all honesty it doesn't really matter, I can't have a business phone that doesn't last a business day (about 10 hours) without needing a charge. An "upto 6hr with 3G under best conditions" phone just doesn't qualify as a business phone. If the phone is going to die just by downloading MS-Exchange email throughout the day, its useless in that environment.

So yes, I am going to go back to either Blackberry (yuck!) or a better option might be Windows Phone. I just dont feel like spending an additional $100 on a mophie additional battery on top of an already overpriced phone.

What the *******? You can't see that kind of usage on any phone in existence.

----------

Restart your phone. If your usage and standby times are still increasing together do a restore from new. You have an app that is hanging (kind of like when an app gets stuck on your computer and the fans start running full speed)

More airplane mode w/ only wifi times. Back to the US in 4 more days:

My firmest belief is supported by this poster. Clearly there is a cellular issue that refuses to give up loading data even when WiFi becomes available. I would say Facebook is the clearest culprit; never using WiFi once you refresh your feed on 3G.

What do you think about this result:

Several calls, listening to music and surfing on web. Everything on exept iAids, Time Zone , Camera and Ping.

That's good to go because you will get 10 hours usage and 1 day 6 hours standby. GREAT!

I have nothing to complain about..... amazing battery life.
say w0rd.

After a few days, I'm pretty satisfied with my battery life. Some gaming, surfing, streaming pandora for more than an hour, iMessaging and normal SMS, talking about 40 min or so... Pretty ok, about same as on my late 4. But i did turn off Siri and location.

I popped my phone on to charge last night it was at 33%, 8 hours later I go to get my phone and it's still charging and is at 98%.

I also noticed the settings app started crashing again in the last few days and now I'm having idle usage again this morning with the battery draining away.

This is just getting ridiculous.

Mines just took a turn for the worse.

Gentlemen,

I'm cummin from the Original iPhone/ iPhone 3G Gen. Bought myself a nice white 4S and read about this battery problem.

As you can see on my screenshot, I nearly get 1 day+. Is that okay?

Some texting with SMS/whatsup, phoning, surfing, music listening, and playing around with the settings.

I am just asking, because I remember having 3 to 4 days battery with my older iPhones. 1 day is not that convinient.

Thanks

PS: Also here. No iAids, etc. All turned off.

Can anybody answer this question?

At night when I go to bed would it affect battery life if the phone is switching from wifi to 3G? When I'm if finished with my phone it's on wifi and sometimes I click it and it's on 3G for a second....is this normal? Or should it stay on wifi when asleep? Is it to do with my wifi connection for why it is doing this?

Yes, this is pretty normal and Apple included this after iOS 4.3.3 update. In their opinion this should save some battery. I have different opinion but may be I am wrong.

I have seen the settings app crash a number of times but no phantom usage.

As far as charging, it was probably finished charging well before you woke up - once fully charged the phone will allow itself to draw power from the battery down to ~97 percent, recharge itself to 100, repeat until unplugged.

i discovered on accident that the proximity sensor was ALWAYS on on my 4S. It had to do with the raise to speak feature and SIRI. I didnt even have SIRI enable though. so i had to enable siri, turn off raise to speak, disable siri. restart phone.

Since then, i have gained a whole hour of battery usage! It was totally unexpected! its been at least 3-4 days since i fixed it, and i've consistently got an entire hour more. I wish i knew this sooner!

i was getting 6 hours actual usage, now i get 7 and a couple minutes extra

Now I'm getting the unresponsive slide to answer whe I get a call.

How do I check if the proximity sensor is always on?

Batterygate cause = Bad Reception

First screenshot is after arriving home from a full weekend vacation at a friends house (more than 6hrs on battery). Second screenshot is after being home a full day. At my home, I get poor reception. When I was at my friends house, I always had good reception. On my case, "batterygate" is related to signal strengh.

I have an iphone 4s with ios 5.0.1

Low 3G reception does reduce battery life. I am assuming the phone is boosting power to get reception and/or losing packets and needs to resend etc But this is also an issue with previous iphone models since 3G was added.

There are a many of other causes of battery drain such as exchange calendar invites looping forever or location services which would exacerbate 3g low reception battery drain. etc

Apparently it gets "stuck" on, even if you disable the raise to speak feature. you have to toggle it on and off again then restart the phone.

I'm getting excellent battery life now

oh, and the way i even noticed this was because i was taking a video of my iphone 4S and i saw a light blinking above my earpiece. i'm thinking what the hell is that?? you cant see it with the naked eye. i found out its an IR light proximity sensor.

i confirmed it was off after toggling it by looking at my 4S through my webcam lol

Trying this out now. Turned off Siri and did a hard reset, which turned off the proximity sensor (realised it was always on when I looked at my phone through my isight camera).

Praying that this helps. Anything is worth a shot now, I guess.
