isnt thats apples job?

falut finding, swtiching things on/off, fiddling with settings starts to sound like were on android or windoze :(

I dont know about you but I bought apple so I dont have to do those things
I agree, it's unfortunate that so many are having issues, a premium product like this shouldn't need troublshooting right out of the box.

That said, when Apple added the multitasking APIs in iOS 4, it became possible for apps to misbehave in the background, so it is at least worth investigating if certain apps using GPS or push notifications are causing problems.

Well, now I AM sad.
I've got 50% of battery drain during the night with most of features disabled (including wifi and push).
I did the 3rd iphone restore now. Lets see... third is the way to go ahahahah
What is your 3G signal strength like at home? I have seen as much as 5% drain/hour in very poor/fringe service areas - the phone is working very hard to actively maintain a connection. My 3-4% overnight drain is with the phone connected to my local WiFi network. Of course if you don't have WiFi you should turn it off but WiFi certainly uses less power than 3G for actual data. Have you tried airplane mode overnight, just to see?

If you did a restore as new with the latest software and you're still losing that much battery at night with a decent signal then it's time to call Apple.

Try restoring the iphone as new (not from a backup). Also, check for signal strengh. On my case, the batterygate is related to signal strengh

(Check my post)

I've had it with this phone.

On my first 4S, I tried every possible fix. Restoring no less than 5 times (as a new device), resetting all settings/network settings, recalibrating the battery, even did all of these steps in the order suggested by some here. I even restored my phone as new, disabled location, wifi, siri, had no apps and data on it. Only had 3G on. And guess what, phantom usage is always 2/3 of standby time no matter what.

Then I got my phone exchanged for a new one. And guess what? Same problem. Phantom usage 2/3 of standby time again. Restored once, reset all settings once, recalibrated battery again, even tried disabling proximity sensor (checked with my webcam to be sure). NOTHING WORKS.

I'm really at my wits end. Can someone please tell me what I'm missing here?

That's some hard luck bro. Maybe see if they'll give you a 4 instead? I dunno what to tell you.

I don't think you are missing anything. I would ask Apple to replace your phone yet again and again until you get the non defective one.

It seems like there are many different causes of accelerated battery drainage, but I think the one with the phantom usage increase in factory default settings is caused by either a defective hardware or abnormal interaction between firmware and the hardware.

My second iPhone 4s is working fine now as far as the battery operation is concerned. No phantom usage time increase any more and the battery drainage is par with my iPhone 4.

Yes, yes, yes... I did everything. Restored as new for 3 times, then restored from backup 1 time. NOthing worked.
I dont have 3G plan, only EDGE (will buy a 3g plan tomorrow). My wifi is turned off all day.
Dont have push notifications turned on and location services only for MAPS and FIND MY IPHONE.

Oh God... why? 50% in the first night is too much =/

What the *******? You can't see that kind of usage on any phone in existence

Dear iSheep,

You clearly haven't used non-Apple phones have you ?

Anyway, my spanking new Windows Phone HTC Trophy last me 2 days without a charge. It is way faster than that crappy IPhone 4S even though its 1-year old technology and has just 1-core compared to IPhone 4S's two. Also, granted its not as spiffy looking as the IPhone 4S, but then again whats the point of a slick looking IPhone if 99.999% of IPhone users cover that phone up with a crappy looking case of some sort. What a joke!!! :p

My naked HTC Trophy looks WAY WAY WAY better than your encased IPhone 4S.

A Windows Phone seems so alive.. all the information I need to presented to me on the home page via the live tiles. No need to go to a Facebook App to check for Facebook updates. No need to go to Twitter App to check for new tweets.. This is such a relief after the app-based world of Apple.

.. But all of the above is just icing at least for me. All I wanted was a strong business phone that lasts me 10 hours of normal usage. I now have it!!!

And best of all ?? My Powerpoint presentations actually show up with the Graphs. No more missing charts like I used to see on the IPhone.

Means nothing.. can you show the part of that screen below that last "Standby" number. There should be a comment in that that "Your phone was plugged in since the last full charge".

Thats how I could get such a high number (before I returned it)... by recharging between full (100%) percent charges.

You said you have NO Apps installed. But have you configured any of the pre-existing apps ? For example, did you configure the Mail App with any mail accounts ?

Did you even bother to open the full screenshot?? Because if you did you would see that there is nothing between "celluar usage" and "standby".
I haven't plugged my phone as you can see if you are not fully blind.;)

Well, I got n hour of each before it hit 95%, then it dropped to 80% after another ~15m of each standby and usage...

Will wait for full 5.1 and if still an issue, will return and see what Apple say.

Congratulations, you won the lottery by getting THE ONLY 100% working IPhone 4S battery. Make sure you dont recharge it too many times, as if you exhaust the max recharges, you ain't getting another similar battery for sure :D

I have been leaving icloud switched off but last night switched it back on and overnight which was about 7 hours...I lost only 3% overnight

very pleased.

stats

3 hours, 31 minutes usage
21 hours, 25 minutes standby

47% left

I wonder if you changed when you take it off charger to taking off in the morning , if your times would fall to about the same. Eg standby 10-12hrs And usage about 7hr. That is if you use your phone alot.
The over night slow drain adds your sleep time so the figure looks better.
I'd bet add in apps and other services it could drop to the 4-5hrs others complain about.

Hey everyone, I'm a little confused here so would appreciate it if you guys could help me out.

As I've mentioned above, nothing has worked for me (I get a lot of phantom usage, refer to the posts above).

However, I realized that turning on airplane mode completely resolved the issue, i.e. no more phantom usage.

Now, I've tried turning off cellular data, wifi, location services, and bluetooth off one by one, but none of these resolved the issue.

From what I understand, airplane mode disables these 4 services along with phone calls and messages. So isn't having all of the 4 services off equal to having airplane mode less the calls/messages? Then why is that airplane mode stops the issues but turning those services off doesn't?

I have iMessage off btw.

You are kidding, right? Turning airplane mode on will turn off all the communication (except Wifi, if its on).

Here's one for you: my car does 11km per liter. BUT, if I turn off the engine and just push the car all the way down, it does more than 1,000,000 km per liter!!!! Isnt it incredible???

I had terrible phantom usage, lost 40% over night and always had 2/3 of the standby time as usage time.

Now I completely reset my phone, didn't restore anything (contacts, calendar, etc. are in the cloud anyway; the texts I sacrificed) and now I have a normal standby/usage time with 3G, WIFI, iMessage, Location Services, etc. on.

i have a feeling that iphone 4S battery is the same as ipod touch 4th , my ipod touch get charge 100 % unplug go down 98 % and used for a while battery percent jump up and down , that make so ignoring ...............

that make so ignoring ...............

huh?

That doesn't happen to my iPhone. If it did, I'd call Apple. So no, your assessment is wrong. The battery is NOT like your iPod touch. Sounds like your iPod touch is broken or fake.

I unplugged my phone from my computer last night around 10:00 PM then went to bed.

This morning my battery was at 99%.

I got 99 problems but a battery aint one.

Hey,

Airplane mode will turn off all 4 services. However, you can turn wifi back on again, with airplane mode on. This way, you still can have data services via wifi, but no phone calls or SMS.

So to your question. If airplane mode ON, makes a big difference, then perhaps you are in a very weak signal, or you phone is constantly searching for signal...wearing down the battery. This certainly does tell you that no local app is the cause.

Try airplane mode ON, but also turn on Wifi and use the phone in your home normally. This will determine if some data service (like a corrupt address or calendar date synching) is the cause. Of course, you must be in a wifi place with good signal, like your home. I have had many experiences where a google or exchange server is just causing my phone to spin, heating up the battery, and sucking up usage time. I had to kill or reboot the phone to get rid of it.

Thunking,

Your ignorance on some basic function on the iPhone is really causing me to suspect that you ever had one. Really.

How could you have decided to buy the iPhone to begin with, if the windows phone seems so much better to you? Didn't you comparison shop.

Calling people iSheep is silly, given that you purchased one with little understanding about the phone.

Do you really mean that you never set up Notifications inside Facebook to give you on screen (even while lock) updates of posts, friend requests, etc, etc

Same comment regarding Twitter.

And regarding speed of the iPhone 4S...very solid independent speed tests (like Anandtech) falsify your comments. Even the single core 4 (not 4S), under iOS 5 is the same speed of most dual core Androids. Many Android OS don't use both cores for all operations.

As for cases, even Android users have cases. As to most people that own cameras and other consumer field items. It is personal preference.

This is no fanboyism...it is just stating facts, and that clearly you never even took any time to understand how to use your phone.

Not understanding how to read the usage screen (and whether or not a charge was given), further reinforces my comments.

My iPhone 4s will last me two days as well.

There is a subset of people that have battery problems, but the majority do not. And I could be wrong, but when someone posts that they had Apple give them 3 new phones, and they have the same problems, well statistically, that is pretty off, and not likely to happen. It sound more like user interaction or cell coverage issues to me then.

It's great to like your device but to go onto a competing devices enthusiast forum and criticize the device and ridicule the users is just.... Get a life. Seriously.
