Hi guys I just got my first iPhone, a 4S

I've had not-so-great battery life the first day. Haven't taken any screenshots yet, I don't even know how (ashamed to admit).

What seems to be the consensus on things to turn off for battery life? I turned off Raise-To-Speak, and read something about time zones (do you guys mean turn off "Set Automatically"?)

I've read about people turning off location services... I like these for some apps and use my phone's GPS, so I'm not sure about this one.

Also does anyone recommend an app for battery monitoring/diagnostics/health info?

i don't trust reset setting will help your battery
i don't trust charge cycle will help your battery
i don't trust restore firmware will help your battery
i don't trust upgrade firmware will help your battery

all that crap is same thing , battery is battery , when you got a new iphone ,
everything is there already ... if battery no good then no good , good is good ..

You would be wrong then. Known fact that the reset all settings and a battery calibration HAS helped a LOT of people with this battery drain issue. Cool thing is it keeps your data other than wi-fi and a few other items like who u are to Siri and your email signature. Anyone having issues still should try this. "Reset all settings" option, (NOT ERASE) then setup as new phone. Lastly drain battery until phone cuts off then fully charge it to 100% and leave it maybe an hour longer.

  1. Location Services>System Services >Location based iADs and Setting Time Zone both off
  2. Any notifications you dont really need
  3. Any locations you dont really need
  4. Wifi Sync unless you really cant or dont want to plug in cord when you fire up iTunes to sync. It does seem to help because wifi sleeps when screen locked/sleep then fires back up immediately wen lock screen goes active.
Also heard that local weather off may help, just set your weather city you want and leave local off (not verified this one yet but makes since) Unless you are travelling from place to place and want to know exact weather where you are at any given time. Then leave it. It does use location so it will cause a little more battery drain. How much not totally sure.

That should be a good start!

Thank you so much sbailey!

Hey guys, wouldn't it be great if we could maybe compile all these suggestions? Have M33-1 add them to his opening post? I really like having helpful info in an easy-to-find place on forums, and these are great tips on getting more out of the battery.

Gentlemen,

I'm cummin from the Original iPhone/ iPhone 3G Gen. Bought myself a nice white 4S and read about this battery problem.

As you can see on my screenshot, I nearly get 1 day+. Is that okay?

Some texting with SMS/whatsup, phoning, surfing, music listening, and playing around with the settings.

I am just asking, because I remember having 3 to 4 days battery with my older iPhones. 1 day is not that convinient.

Thanks

PS: Also here. No iAids, etc. All turned off.

No, this is fantastic and I would appreciate honest details about what is on or off. This was my expectations for 4S battery life.

It's been months and no fix so does that mean what we have is what we get?

Has anyone been successful in exchanging their iPhone for a new one due to the battery issue? I didn't want to because I've already put screen protectors on my iPhone and did it perfectly and don't want to have to do it again, but my iPhone lasts less than 4 hours and this is just becoming a hassle.

First screen protector was just practice. Next time it will go on even better.

The hardest thing for putting on screen protector is getting it perfectly lined up. Getting dust underneath it is no worries (for static cling shields) since you can just use tapes to partially lift the protector and use another tape to take out dusts.

Another random question I've been asking. Are you guys leaving your phone unplugged when you're sleep and majority of the morning, then using the phone for four, five, six hours and calling that use of the phone? I'm attempting to believe that 18 hours of standby is not just you sleeping for 8-9 hours and not touching the phone for majority of the day

I usually unplug phone before bed. Use it next day and got 20hr standby with 7hr useage. When I charged over night and unplugged in the morning my battery was worse. 12hr standby 7hr usage. Weird huh

All to 20%

i dont know if this has been mentioned as its a mistake i made.

i know the auto time set on the clock if you disable that but if you go to location services at the bottom there is a "system services" go into there and turn off setting time zone or everything you dont really need. my batter has been loads better.

but as i say not sure if this is what you guys did just orginally i turned off the "set automatically" under date and time.

Holy ********!
Its my first iphone ever and its a 4S!
I slept for 7 hours and 50% of battery is gone! what the heck???
No wifi and no data were turned on!

No wifi and no data were turned on!

1. Disable:
- Location-Based iAds
- Setting Time Zone
- Notifications that you don't need
- Siri's Raise to Speak
- Wifi-Sync
- Ping
- iCloud Backup
- Push
- Fetch new data (you can leave it on Manual)
- iMessage

2. Delete:
- Fb App and Fb Messenger App

3. Leave the iphone near a window (for better reception)

Voila! You now have an 4s with 6+ usage battery life and +150hrs standby time!!!

Wow, that was fast!
Ok.
All settings are disabled, as you suggested, except:
Fb app and iMessage.
I am a little bit sad: do I have to delete and turn off all these settings to get a decent phone? :( So, I paid for what? To have a phone that only makes calls?

Sorry, dont get me wrong, but I am new at this and I am not a teenager with stupid questions. I searched over google but I was like: its impossible, I must ask at MacRumors...

Turn it all off? Who suggest such a thing? Come on get real.

The user above suggested to disable many settings. Did you read?

Exactly. It's just getting silly now. Why should you honestly have to alter the phone to get better battery life. Not what it's bought for.

Yes, my question too!
Its like: pay for a 1,000 dollars phone (in my country :() and use it like a 50 dollars one, disabling all settings

You should not have to turn off so many things to get good standby time. I have only turned off a few things under the advanced Location Services menu (iAds, diagnostics, traffic) and my battery only drains 3-4% over night.

There is some suspicion that certain apps are misbehaving (e.g. Facebook) and cause poor standby battery drain.

Obviously anything that is using the GPS for location services will result in more battery usage, so it makes sense to disable things you don't need/want.

Even with every single feature turned on, anything more than 1-2% standby drain is unacceptable (with the caveat that if you have a lot of push notifications turned on and you are connected to 3G with a poor signal, the phone will have to work very hard and you will get worse battery life, my understanding is there is no way around this with any phone).

It is unfortunate that it doesn't "just work" out of the box but if you want to narrow down what is causing your specific problem, the best thing to do is restore the phone as new with iTunes, disable many/most features and apps, see what your battery life is like, and slowly add features and apps to determine which ones could be the problem.

falut finding, swtiching things on/off, fiddling with settings starts to sound like were on android or windoze :(

I dont know about you but I bought apple so I dont have to do those things

Well, now I AM sad.
I've got 50% of battery drain during the night with most of features disabled (including wifi and push).
I did the 3rd iphone restore now. Lets see... third is the way to go ahahahah
