I've turned down the brightness to 60%

First time posting. This is with a lot of words with friends, hangman with friends, texting, facebook messenger, and even a few trips with Wave Navigation. Not too bad I suppose? Was at 100% at around 5pm yesterday, used it until I went to bed, and it dropped maybe 3% over the 7 hours or so I was sleeping. Going to let it die and charge back up to 100% (which I think is what they call calibrating?) Will keep an eye on this and hope I break 6 hours usage sometime.

I get mixed usage, sometimes it seems great and others I seem to trigger a bug where the usage and standby times are the same even when I am not using the phone (i.e. both go up at the same time).

When I hit that bug I lose power faster than I would expect in Airplane mode i.e locked screen at 90%, killed all apps and put it in Airplane mode, next morning it had 8 hours of additional usage / standby time and the battery had dropped 14% for no explicable reason.

[EDIT]
Was curious what my wifes battery usage was currently (she is on my old 4) and at present with 61% battery left, she is on:

Usage: 2hours 6 minutes
Standby: 1 day 9 hours

My 4S is currently claiming 7% battery left
Usage 17 hours 7 minutes
Standby 1 day 1 hour.

However the 4S figures are currently lying. As stated at least 8 hours of the usage is false (Phone uptime is currently 15 hs 2 minutes as I rebooted it to fix the usage/standby bug) and I most assuredly haven't spent 9 hours with the phone being used or left it running in an app.

The 200 hour standby should be in Airplane mode, with everything turned off? Not fetching emails, no wifi, no edge, no 3G?

No, Standby time should just be your phone locked but not in Airplane mode

From http://www.apple.com/iphone/battery.html

Standby Time:
Testing conducted by Apple in September 2011 using preproduction iPhone 4S units and software, on both GSM and CDMA carrier networks. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks was turned off. Battery life depends on the cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPhone units; actual results may vary.

No standby time is how you would have your phone normally set but just sitting on your table. I hate to say it but apple is NOWHERE near their 200 hr standby time

Does keeping wifi on so ICloud would auto back up waste much memory rather than keeping wifi off?

After 2months of so of bloody iOS5+5.01 and the stupid battery issue. I've not accepted that my iphone won't last longer than 7-8hours on standby and I'd be lucky if it lasts longer than 4-5hrs If I want to use something so.....I have invested some $$ in a Sony Ericsson to carry around if I'm going to be out longer than 6hours just in case I need a phone that will last a good 2-3days before I need to charge it.

Not ideal carrying round 2 phones but I can't walk about with a dead phone for half a day 7days a week. Good ol Sony.E always comes through for me :)

Your solution seems a bit like towing another car behind yours in case yours breaks down.

Try the battery tips. Or take it to apple

Try the battery tips. Or take it to apple

I've done all the tips many times. I've let the battery drain down to dead about 10x (not hard when it only lasts a few hours). I've turned off nearly everything making it well just a phone, I've reinstalled iOS5.0.1 about 8x, every time same result. It literally began soon as I had installed 5.0. iOS4 was perfect.

I can't take it to apple because it's out of warranty and I don't have £100ish for a new battery and I doubt it's not a hardware fault because if it was then I can't see how it can be fine for 8/9months on iOS4 then within 30seconds of installing iOS5, the battery problem begins.

Just hoping Apple comes up with a fix soon

I don't know if this is normal or not, but I don't think I have any complaints.
Thoughts?

My battery is about the same and I don't think I have battery issues. But I do hav alot turned off like siri iMessage , wifi,Bluetooth stuff like that.

Probably just a code bug somewhere

I don't think they're going to "fix" anything. These issues seem to be a minority of users. Sure it *seems* like a lot of people but you have to consider that 1. they've sold MILLIONS of iPhones, they've maybe had a few thousand complaints. In the long run that's a small fraction of iPhone owners. 2. People don't get online as frequently to talk about how great something is as much as they do to complain about it. So you're likely to hear more complaints than praise.

If you've tried the genius bar without luck, it sounds like you're going to have to troubleshoot on your own. According to your numbers, you've got a BIG battery problem. Buying a backup phone to carry is absolutely ridiculous. There's GOT TO be something else causing your battery drain.

Just because people don't take to forums posting doesn't mean they're happy. A friend bought one. One of the first things he asked about was battery. He is very disappointed. There's no way he would ever come on here or anywhere else posting. If apple want to loose business they're going the right way about it.

Hi!

I think I have a similar problem, but maybe I am doing something wrong. My battery depletes awefully fast too but the usage display in the options is a bit weird.

Right now I have 50% battery after basically having the phone lie around from last night to today (13 hours). The thing is that under usage 12 hours are listed, even though I haven't really done anything with it (played a bit Game Dev Story for maybe 45 minutes, wrote a forum post and had two phone calls.)

How does the phone determine the usage? I have no background programs running and the phone was dark (screen turned off automatically) for most of the time so how does it count 12 hours of usage since last full charge?
