If what I found is applicable to others: the mstreamd process appears to be preventing the system from idle sleeping properly. Normally when the process is created it appears to set PreventUserIdleSystemSleep. It holds that and then releases it quickly; from 0 seconds to at most a couple of minutes (generally 0 to 40 seconds).

However since the 19th of December on my I've had abnormal power usage and after digging around in the powerlogs (I had an old debug profile active) from the phone I found that since the 19th mstreamd is often only releasing PreventUserIdleSystemSleep after 2 thru 33 hours and that seems to be why the devices are fast draining. Basically they aren't properly idling down.

I get at most 25 hours Standby/Usage time (figures are the same) on the 4S and my wife gets 5 days 10 days standby time and 4 hours usage on her iPhone 4

Is there a solution to this other than Apple just fixing it in a release??

When I was off between new years and Christmas my new iPhone 4S battery was at about 65% at the end of a full day. This was while mostly at home where I have good cell recpetion and I am on my home's wi-fi.
This is a MAJOR difference from when I am at the office, which is in a basement providing poor cell reception and no access to wi-fi. With zero calls and just a few texts sent my 4S battery barely lasts my 8 hour work day.
My iPhone 4 was no different between home and work even with iOS 5 on it.

Sadly not that I've found, I haven't figured out what the trigger is yet or why there are occasional periods when it works normally and there is a 25 minute difference between standby & usage times.

I think a fix is purely in Apples hands as its a system daemon.

Maybe with Beta 3... I'm on Beta 2 right now and after restoring and starting fresh I'm getting better battery, but still not where I want/believe what I think it should be.

You guys might want to try out this app call Process Killer By Aeonika, it is free for today 1-6-12, some customer review said it help to extend their battery life, so it might help with the overnight standby battery drain issue.

Description

Application shows you background processes and memory consumption.
The app "kills" with it's simplicity!

And I can confirm it works just like REMOVE BACKGROUND SB SETTING or bigboss's KILLBACKGROUND, with my son's JB itouch.

What batterygate?

Try this for a change, WiFi always on, as is BT

bc9363ad-221c-4ef6.jpg

And it's on a single charge, the key is not to play games as this is the most CPU intensive an drains a lot of power from the battery :) the brightness set on auto and the slider at about 40%

6h 1min usage
1day 15 hours standby

Nice. I used to have similar results but not for nearly 3 weeks.

I think that we loose the most in weak 3G signal areas, if we only could turn Edge on for a change that would make the power consumption look more like the iPhone 4

This is my results not fully used yet. Pretty impressed :)

Apple does an excellent job of never repeating it's blunders. One look at their history reveals an excellent record.

They fixed Antennagate by not repeating that problem on this years 4S.

Batterygate will be fixed when you buy the next new iPhone.

It's as simple as that. You can count on Apple :)

Apple said its software and that they'd fix it. If they don't then I know people who will return their phones for a refund. How could apple refuse if it doesnt meet the advertised specs.

Apple iPhone 4S battery drainage configuration bug solution

Today I released my final solution for the Apple iPhone 4S sync batttery drainage bug.

This is a copy/paste from my website. The detailed analysis will be filled in later.

The Apple iPhone 4S Battery IOS 5.x Configuration Bug

Problem

Ever since the appearance of IOS 5.0 the iPhone 4S has been plagued by battery issues. Although Apple fixed most of these issues with IOS 5.0.1, there are still users out there experiencing the excessive battery drain on their newly purchased iPhones. The problem manifests itself by showing about 3 percent drainage per hour while idling. Typically the phone would lay idling during the night and show 30 percent battery drain in 10 hours. The only thing that was done to the phone was push email and bluetooth off.

Cause

iTunes and IOS have gone through a lot of updates since they became available. When the iphone is synced with iTunes or being backed up from an iPhone 4S save, the battery bug can manifest itself.
There is faulty behavior inside the syncing between the iPhone and iTunes ( Either iTunes on your pc/mac or iTunes in the cloud )

Solution

The solution to the iPhone 4S battery drainage bug is to properly reset the communication between the iPhone and iTunes.

1. Backup your iPhone using itunes or iTunes in the cloud.
2. Reset the Apple Mobile Device Service :
On a PC : Remove the Apple Mobile Device service and de-install iTunes and re-install it again.
On a Mac : you can't un-install iTunes because it is part of the Operating System. You can re-install it though, but before you do that you need to remove a file at /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext . Apple describes how to do this here
3. Connect your iphone to iTunes and it should sync properly and your battery problems should be over.

Detailed Analysis

Soon.....

I'd appreciate it if you would fill in the poll here so I know I am on the right track with this one.

Regards.

I appreciate your efforts, but I can't see why this should be the problem. Are you saying that the battery problem is only during syncing? So, if you never sync your iPhone with iTunes, or rarely do so, you will not have any battery problems?

Also, I would be careful saying 5.0.1 fixed most users battery problems. For many, it made the issue worse or made a problem where one initially didn't exist. Now, do I have proof of this? No. But, no one has proof that 5.0.1 fixed most people's battery issues either.

If you deinstall iTunes and reinstall won't you lose everything?

Nope, you will keep your stuff. I even tried it on my PC. ( Normally working on a mac )

Regards.

If you only synced once with iTunes you have the possibility of this bug occurring. It doesn't matter if you don't sync often with iTunes. The first sync with iTunes will create the possibility of the drainage bug.

A lot of users reported to benefit from the latest 5.0.1. I did not track the amount of users that actually got the problem back when updating to 5.0.1

I just bought an iphone 4s yesterday and have yet to see a battery problem. Left it at 100% when i went to sleep and it was 96 % when i woke up at 830. Its at 78 percent right now with regular daily usage. Maybe apple fixed it with a new batch of phones?

What's your usage/standby numbers? And what have you been doing with the phone?

I picked up a new iPhone 4S on Wednesday. I was previously using an iPhone 4 which had excellent battery life. I would stream Pandora over Wi-Fi at work for hours, and by the end of the day I'd still have ~40% battery left. However, I would charge the phone every night regardless.

Once I got the new 4S, I charged it up fully, and then completely drained it until it turned off. My results are below and speak for themselves. This usage included everything from 8 tabs open in Safari browsing, lots of text messaging, a few games, and Pandora/iPod music.

Yes, I plugged the phone into my 15" MBP for a quick sync. This was only for about ~5 seconds though, to allow me to enable the "Sync over Wi-Fi" option. Oh yeah, this usage also includes syncing over 4 playlists via Wi-Fi, with about ~100 songs total.

Lucky... I'm lucky to get near 6 hrs. Maybe there's some substance to the theory that was suggested a couple posts up about newer devices getting some issue fixed that was present in the launch devices...

I found my battery life got better after a few cycles although I've bought everyone in my family an iPhone (Yes I felt getting 2 or 5 ones for Christmas so went and bought the rest ones lol) and we've found the one that was bought last with the worst battery life though.

By cycles you mean fully discharging and then charging back up or just your normal charging cycle of throwing it on at the end of the day?

My battery life is all over the place on my 4s. My wife's 4 with the update doesn't seem to be that bad. I've read all all of the threads, turned off all of the unnecessary options and it's still bad. I'll go to sleep with it at 70% and wake up with it at 20%, but it's a random thing. If the new ios update doesn't fix it, I'll definitely bug someone at the genius bar about it.
