The point of airplane mode was to eliminate problems around iCloud, notifications, or whatever that may use data. Once a similar test is done to a phone that does not have the drain problem will show if the problem is hardware or software based.

ok, makes sense on paper, but there's plenty of software at play even with airplane mode on...who knows, maybe the battery issue is based on a bug in the springboard?

The first few days I had it, it seemed to be draining very quickly, especially compared to my 3GS.

I ran the battery down to 0% last night, turned it off, let it charge to 100%, and today, it's MUCH improved.

It's been off of charge for 6 hours now, and I'm at 88% currently, and that includes a few Siri inquiries, and some short calls, and web requests.

Sorry to hear for those who are having battery problems. I just got my new iPhone last night and was concerned about the battery as well. Here's my results:

- White 64gb 4S
- Set up as a new phone (no backups used)
- Build week: C39
- Bluetooth: On
- Siri: On / Hold up to speak
- iCloud: On for all except Mail / Notes / Photo Stream
- iTunes wifi sync: Off
- Brightness: 40%
- Wifi: On / Don't ask to join networks
- Notifications: On
- Location Services: On
- Find my iPhone: On
- Battery Percentage: Off

100% charge this morning around 2am, currently at 90% with standby time of 8 hours, 26 minutes. Will see how it holds up through the day, but so far I haven't seen any significant drain.

The one suggestion I'd make is to turn Battery Percentage off and just turn it on to check levels. Not sure why, but I remember it would drain my 3GS battery pretty quick.

(Update)
Time since last charge
Usage: 3 Hours, 50 min
Standby: 12 hours, 55 minutes

Battery at 46%. Been actively using it throughout the day and playing music through BT headphones.

stop

i get about 5:10 until 1% drops and that's doing nothing but the stop watch..i bet if i throw internet into the mix..it's about 2 min

Wonder if i can check this when on the internet somehow

STOP! don't use the stopwatch, it drains the battery!!

:D

If this were true then it would take a LOAD off my mind knowing the issue is NOT due to iCloud, notifications, push email, or any of the million other suggestions posted here.

Not really. The idea is to identify which processes are using up resources, narrow it down, and eliminate unnecessary processes from running constantly. Apple's battery estimates are never with all services and processes turned on, but it's not just system processes that could be gobbling resources. Applications that might be written poorly may be hung.

I know, I'm poking fun. Jesus when there's a problem in apple land people get extremely defensive.

No. It's turn off stuff you don't need. Why have things running in the background that you would never use?

On my 4 I would leave BT on, loc services, Wifi, ect and never have any problems making it a day plus. I get you guys are trying to isolate a software bug from a crap battery (hardware). Relax

Here's some more stats just for S&Gs. I still have cell data and location services turned on for maps. Everything else relevant, ie BT, wifi, and push are off. Screen brightness at 50%.

You can dismiss that first lap...

And here's some video playback of a synced movie. Movie was started at 49%...

That looks like approx 4m = 1%, which is like 6.6h of continuous playback.

None of this probably matters as there are just too many different factors involved, but there it is, anyway.

Currently I'm at 41% after uploading those photos and typing out this post while switching back and forth from photobucket. My usage is at 2:49 with 15ish on standby. This is MUCH better than yesterday for me.

Alright, I followed the tips in a previous post which involved:

Turning off ping in Restrictions
Turning off location services for iAds, Time Zone and Diag/Usage.

94% on my full charge so far. Was using Spotify on high quality over 3G as well as browsing the web for about 30 minutes. Seems to be reacting much more acceptably instead of plummeting a percent per minute or two like it previously was.

Sounds like good battery life to me. :)

Usage: 1 hour 27 minutes on 3G with 70% left...

Good/Bad?

Figured you guys are the experts:) !

Well that would be 5 hours total, not great but not as bad as some are getting.

So far I'm getting a little over 7 hours from 100% to 0, typically 30 min of music in there. My iPhone 4 gets closer to 8.

7-8 hours = Good.

Going off those numbers, you'll be getting around 5. It all depends on what you did over that time. I'd say you have nothing to worry about. It's the guys who are draining out on standby that have the most concern right now, I think.

Decided to check my usage to compare.

Usage: 4h, 11m
Standby: 7h, 18m

Current battery percentage: 35%

Is that decent?

What did I do with the phone during that time? Facebook, Words w/Friends, text messaging, gchat, internet browsing, tons of picture taking, facetime, a couple of quick phone calls, and I think that is it.

And I just realized I've had wifi on for an hour.

It's always gonna depend on what you're doing during that time. 2 hours playing Infinity Blade is going to use more juice than say farting around in settings and writing notes, you know?

Still, at this point, I'd say anyone with 5+ hours of total usage is doing okay, considering.

Hey guys been monitoring this thread and site for a while. Never posted b/c so much information has helped without the need to ask.

Thought I was having battery issues so Ive restored, turned off various things and did full drain downs and recharges.

Ate these numbers decent compared to others?

Currently at 58%
2 hrs 38 mins usage
4 hrs 15 mins standby

Should add this is just standard twitter checking, WWF, and some editing in a paint app. (Oh and a lot of reading this forum)

I'm not having standby drainage issues like the rest only the 1% drop every 5-10mins during usage.

Battery def seems better than Friday when I got it.

Thanks for any feedback!

Battery life improved after

I deleted both email accounts and re-added them. Yesterday at this time my iphone 4s was dead and had to be charged. This is after it being fully charged at 6:30am. I read on another forum to improve battery life to delete my email accounts and re-add. I was skeptical but tried it. I am still at 50% and I haven't charged my phone since yesterday! :):D:D:D

Does that include deleting POP3 accounts and also cloud? Do you actually go into the iCloud and delete your icloud account using the red delete button?

Thanks!

What kinda of email accounts were they? iCloud? MobileMe? Exchange? Gmail? Were they set to Push or Fetch?

Deleting and re-adding them would have the effect of restarting, or at least reinitializing, the associated services that run on the phone. Perhaps those services were caught in some tight loop that was eating CPU and thus power? Just a hunch.

No that's pretty crappy.

My wife's phone is also at 35%, 4h 17m usage, 1 day 3 hours standby.

No Problem

No problem whatsoever. But I do not do email, and turned off Bluetooth, stock widget, weather widget, and twitter.

My problem is that I was used to charging my 3GS every night while I slept, now I go to bed and have at least 50ish% left and im kinda stuck in charging limbo!
do i charge? do i not charge?!
such anxiety

fixed my phone with setting up as new

I did a restore and set up as new phone yesterday and that cleared up the battery drain issue for me. White iPhone 64gb Sprint

I'm almost exactly where you are.

2 hours 26 mins of usage
5 hours 16 mins of standby and at 57%

I do not think this is very good at all.

I do not think this is very good at all.

If you used 3G the entire time, it seems like it's trending towards a little short of 6 hrs. Apple says on it's website "Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G," so assuming you are using 3G it sounds ok.
