Took my release day 4S in to my local Apple store today, due to really poor battery life (1% loss every minute) and they swapped it over straight away, no questions asked for a brand new retail boxed unit :D

Post back if you notice any improvements!

Using streaming audio apps over wifi like Pandora and Sticher Radio, as well as doing some Safari browsing, I'm noticing that battery consumption is noticeably higher than with the iPhone 4. I have yet to implement any of the changes suggested in this thread (turning off location services, etc)

Far to many variable configurations to make sensible comparisons.

We need a few phones with a baseline iOS config, preferably in airplane mode since we all have varying cell and wifi coverage. If we can achieve very similar -- and SLOW -- battery drainage rates that way, at least we can rule out the batteries!

The configurations I set up were exactly the same and it's clear there's a difference between the two phones. I don't think it's the batteries, it's iOS related, but what it is...who knows.

Any developers here care to monitor their phones w/ Instruments, or enable Power logging on the device itself in developer settings?

There's tons of noise on developer forums about power issues from early betas all the way up to and including the GM. Without going into detail, one guy reported a problem where a process on the phone was repeatedly crashing and restarting, leading to excessive CPU load and of course battery drain. This however was not 4S specific since it predated the 4S release.

Wait wait... your wife, I mean CEO, let you mess w/ her phone?

Or are the two configurations on your original 4S and a replacement?

So, I went into the Location Service / System services, and DID turn off the cell network search, left traffic on but all other location are set to off.

I was at 74%, have now downloaded about eight app updates, that was nearly 2 hours ago and I am STILL AT 74%..

go figure.

okay, now it is 73%, but that is 1% over the last 90 minutes

I'm now down to 71%, 1:45 minutes later. So thats about 1% an hour at most. Texting, did two phone calls, email coming in every 15 minutes.

Are you able to lock onto GPS quickly and does it affect location settings on apps such as facebook tagging, twitter tagging, etc?

I found that the cellular data > off when using Wifi has significantly boosted battery. If your method works for not on wifi, I will most definitely use it.. jsut want to see its limitations.

Thanks.

Ok I think I may have a problem. I've been having pretty extreme battery drain drain over the last few days. So I decided to test it i let it drain to 0% then i put it in the charger all night and woke up this morning and it was at 99% I pulled it off the charger and in a few seconds it dropped to 98% and over the last 30min it's dropped to 87% with just web browsing. What do you guys think?

30 minutes to 87%? I don't know.. that may be excessive. So 1 hour would be 26% drop. 2 hours half your battery is gone.

yes

yes, at least using google maps and stuff seems to work just as fast.

Now, here is a funky issue. When i open google maps, I get a lock in a second or so. When I close the app, and press hold, hit the red X close the ARROW in the menu bar is STILL THERE?

Battery

Speaking for myself, I've not encountered any battery issues. I get as much usage out of my 4S as I did on my iphone 4. I charge it overnight and take it off the charger in the morning. Every so often if I'm really heavily using it I might pop it on a charger during the day, but that is the rare exception due to above usual usage.

I'd actually left it off charge last night and this morning it showed 49% battery with 3 hours 35 minutes usage and 19 hours 25 minutes standby. Recharged and it's at 99% showing 15 minutes usage, 1 hour 19 minutes standby.

I suspect the majority of people aren't having significant issues, but clearly there are a good number of people who are having problems. My guess is some of those may be individually faulty hardware (would be a warranty fix), or there may be issues with iOS5 and/or some apps (which will presumably be fixed with forthcoming updates).

If you're not in a hurry it might be worthwhile to give it a couple more weeks to see how it shakes out; or if you are in a hurry I'd say go for it and be aware of the return policies in case it doesn't work as you expect.

Thanks, interesting you don't have issues. Just difficult to see whether the device actually has a battery problem, or people just use their device so much without realising it. I think i will wait a few weeks like you said see what comes of it. I'm not in a hurry, but i dont want to keep waiting and waiting like last time, otherwise before not i'll be looking at the next device lol.

it's got to be 4S problem..

Left 32G iphone 4S, right 32G iphone 4
I have no 2 working sim cards other than a foreign sim working on AT&T network.

Disable most of the location services for 4S, delete and re-add all mail account. Did couple full discharge already.

The difference shouldnt be that big!!!

Nice visual comparison.

We all know that the iPhone is known to have stunning battery life, to be able to go a whole day on 1 charge.

But i had to charge my 4S in the middle of the day, and this is certainly a problem. I think we all need to sign a letter or something, for Apple to acknowledge there is an issue.

did you buy from apple store or carrier? online or in store?

I have the iPhone 4 and notice SIGNIFICANT batter life loss since getting iOS 5. It was 100% charged at 8am this morning and now it is at 10%. I have hardly been using it as well.

This is my usage...I am fine with it!

So today I turned off my iCloud account and put my old gmail account back on my iPhone. Yesterday I ended the work day with 18% and today I end with 54%. I really hope it is not iCloud, I love those features.

Just put it to manual. Then when you enter a contact, it will sync when the app is open.. same with photos, calendar, and reminders.

Ouch. WiFi on, BT off, Location services for Siri only.......

Usage: 2 hours 24 mins
Standby: 10 hours 15 mins

37% left. Not any better than my old Droid.

Went to bed with 100% and woke up with 99%. This is with two reminders and every possible feature except bluetooth turned on.

Similar to mine, I am seeing about 3-4% drop overnight.

Under Mail, contacts, calendar > Fetch new data > Advanced > iCloud.

This will manually check my iCloud mail for new messages when I open the mail app, but how do I make it so when I open my contacts app it will check for updates there, and when I open my safari app it will check for new bookmarks there etc.

Bought from Apple store on release day

Only had it for a few hours, but it seems just as bad, starting to wonder if its a batch problem, as the replacement has an almost identical serial number, or just a setting somewhere :S

I have a feeling its a software problem with so many people facing the issue.

Mine seems to be dropping on average 8-9% per hour..I am just checkiong emails, imessages, and very light web browsing..No video, music or large downloading. I was fully charged at 7:30 this morning..had all locationm services off, email set to manual, icloud is not activated. My battery was at 6% at 5:15pm. I was sitting in a meeting all day today between 2 iPhone4 users who were on their phones a lot more than I was and they had 30% left at the end of the day.
I dont think its a bad battery but Apple needs to come up with an update to 5
