What if there is no software fix but it's the problem of the 4S and we are stuck with this??

Apple will figure this out, the 3GS had similar problems when it came out.

This needs to be resolved I am not making through the day on one charge and last night I turned almost everything off.

I may restore as new this weekend and see if that helps at all.

Given that there are quite a few people out there who say their 4S has decent and even great battery life, and at the same time there are quite a few who are saying their 4 or 3GS phones with iOS 5 suddenly have noticeably worse battery life, it makes it sound like it's more than (just) a hardware issue.

I charged mine yesterday and it shows 1 day standby and 1h 50m talk time. and its at 48%. Is this good... I followed some suggestions turned off some of the things mentioned here.

Is this good or can it do better?

Okay so this is my usage today. No games, browsed twitter on 3G a few times and sent quite a few texts and had quite a lot of emails pushed to me (over both 3G and wifi). Wifi was on the entire time too and brightness on auto. What do you think?

This will manually check my iCloud mail for new messages when I open the mail app, but how do I make it so when I open my contacts app it will check for updates there, and when I open my safari app it will check for new bookmarks there etc.

^this. i don't know how to set it to manual either

Do you think?

Do you think leaving apps opened in the Multitasking bar is taking up A lot of my battery? Because i'm having the same problem as all of you. I mean it would be really lame if i had to close all these apps all the time i Like the quick switching.

Bought from Apple store on release day

----------

Only had it for a few hours, but it seems just as bad, starting to wonder if its a batch problem, as the replacement has an almost identical serial number, or just a setting somewhere :S

I'm going to the store on Friday too. They've said they'll give me a replacement too, what's the serial number of your device?

Anyone tried turning off find my iPhone? It seems to have solved my battery drain.... I think. I will know more tomorrow.
I will play with the settings to see what happens to the battery.

I was thinking the same thing, interesting...

Curiously, I used my phone with stock settings for a couple of days and did not notice problems.

Then I restored it from a 3GS backup. I suspect that is when the problems started.

Anyone start from scratch and still have the same issues?

I'd try to wipe it out, but I'll lose all my app data, correct (even if the apps are backed up in iTunes)?

I can 100% say what caused the battery drain for me.

(Edit: this is with wireless syncing enabled) My phone would have no indication it was sync'ing (i.e. the spinny thing wasn't in the top left), but iTunes would say that it WAS syncing (stuck on step 2 or some such). During this time if I looked at the usage it would always be the same amount of time as standby (meaning that as far as the phone was concerned it was being used 100% of the time getting no rest).

Force quitting iTunes immediately allowed the phone to go into standby (i.e. the usage number would stay the same/only increase slightly while the standby number would go much higher).

This is something to do with wireless sync that didn't affect my iPhone 4 at all during beta (when I used wireless sync since it was available).

After 1Hour of usage (and 2hrs of standby), which included a few mins of Fruit Ninja, some email checking, Twitter checking, and txting I'm down to 79%

And I restored it as a brand new phone too. So clearly that doesn't help.

What I can't pinpoint is whether this is a software or hardware problem..but there is definitely a problem.

I did the following and resolved battery drain for me

1. Restore to Factory settings... DO NOT restore from backup in iTunes
(PITA! since I start from scratch and download all my apps from app store again instead of going through iTunes)

2. Disable the following unless you feel you really need it
Settings > Location Services > System Services
* Compass Calibration
* Diagnostics & Usage
* Location-Based iAds
* Setting Time Zone

3. Disable everything in iCloud settings other than Photo stream and Find my iPhone
(Photo stream is empty at this time. will try to add some pics and see how it affects battery)

Somehow when you restore from backup (your iPhone4 or older files in iTunes) does not work well with iPhone4s causing this battery drain. At least for me. After doing the above. I've no troubles with battery drain as previously.

Deleting my email accounts, restarting my phone and re-adding my email accounts solved the trick for me.

It was mentioned earlier in this thread but it worked for me. Not sure how many have tried it, but it fixed both my 4S and iPad 2.

I have iCloud and Exchange pushing with location services set to on. I'm getting the battery life I got with my iPhone 4 now.

Let's not **** about. Doing all the steps people say nothing really changes. On standby nor much really happens. When you start using your phone it's dropping rapidly and this is the problem. As I type this I am loosing 1% every couple of minutes. The software is using the new processor to its max and killing it's battery.

Anyone notice it appears to be secretly using location all the time to set timezone?

Checked 2 iPhone 4S's and the same issue

Its got a purple icon all the time but the status is disabled by default

1. You'll be told there is no problem.

2. You'll be told to deactivate some feature.

3. You buy a car charger and pick up an extra usb for the office.

Ok - I'm sick... Gave up an iPhone 4 that had awesome battery life for a phone with 2 hrs use and 5 hours standby that is down to 48%... What do I do?????

My phone has 10% battery remaining.

Since last full charge:
5h 25m usage (although i'm quite sure I haven't used it that much)
10h 25m standby

This is not good to hear. I'm still waiting on my 4S, my first iPhone, and now I wonder if I can even keep it. Are the people with good battery life just pulling my leg, or is this problem not happening with all 4S's?
