Kept quiet checking this thread to see how the story develops, but I feel I need to chip in few things now..

- In my experience, what's causing battery drain, and high usage over night, where there was actually no usage are rouge network connections, open sockets that attempt to send data but for whatever reason, either don't understand the answer or the process controlling them is hanged. These connections...

v0n, are you an iOS dev? It'd be great if you could file a bug directly over at Apple's dev site as they seem really responsive right now. I have no idea how valid your theory is, but it certainly sounds promising!

I am, but their response to bug reports are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot.

Average response times I have had to bugs is 3 months. I still have bugs for safari 2 in the system that were never dealt with!

Hah, true a lot of the time, but devs filing bugs about battery in the 5.0.1 betas seem to be getting contacted fast and getting asked to install a provisioning profile to log stats. At least according to the dev forums.

Either way, it would be great if someone who is a developer could file a report with v0n's findings. It certainly can't hurt.

S4 Battery issues

Just got new 4S.
Outrageous battery consumption.
I had to turn off most functions, as suggested by several other users around the world, and still the battery lasts only a day.
My previous iPhone, a 3G, would last 3 to 4 days with same usage.
And then again: what sense does it make to turn off all nice options
just to have a decent battery range?
Like having a Ferrari and going at 20 mph to spare the engine.
I'm very disappointed.

I too was very dissatisified. one thing that worked for me was the exchange calendar. if you have exchange on your iphone 4s you WILL be miserable. turn off the calendar and enjoy decent battery life. try it the difference is amazing!

I have exchange contacts and calendar and enjoy 7Hrs of usage and almost a day of standby.

I haven't full cycled the battery since new yet and i've just drained it down to 1%... now it is charging up it's full cycle.

This was with 7 hours usage and 27 hours of standby

It included
several calls,
lots of messages,
twitter,
browsing,
several reminders,
some google maps,
quite a few hours of music
1 location based reminder which was running for about 5 - 7 hours.

Wifi was also connected most of the time along with
iCloud,
photo stream + several photos pushed to the cloud,
3 push email accounts and
bluetooth turned on for about half of the time and bluetooth was actually paired with my car off the charger for roughly 3 - 4 hours.

I did notice the usage drop by a % or 2 each time i used it, but once it dropped to 1% remaining i noticed the 27 hours standby and 7 hours usage which i think it very good considering the usage don't you think?

The thing is if i restore the old backup on my new 4s then the battery works for 13 hours @58% battery.

If starting with a new phone it does not last 4-5 hours.

So you buy a $750+ iPhone to disable everything?! Why not buy a crappy nokia?! Your destroying the point in having an iPhone! FTW!

pissing me off now

Shouldn't have to do that, which is why a software update is in the works.

For whatever reason, I have acceptable battery life in usage and standby on my 4S and have nearly everything turned on.

You'll notice even with all applications closed and netstat open there is unexplained data polling going on where the phone constantly opens short bursts of connections to aggregator servers at apple, amazonaws and teliacarrier (which is odd in UK, where we have no telia) every few minutes.

<snip>

Take it away forum - check netstats and monitors on your phones and see if we are onto something there...

I think you are onto something. AWS is one of the iCloud Cloud service providers which is interesting.

Could iMessage be the problem? Also how far are we from the update getting released?!?!

4 hours usage

12 hours Standby

Had mine 3 days and having to charge it every night - sometimes doesnt make it through the whole of the day

Should i take it back? Will Apple replace it?

Uhh... hardly, your results are wrong. My phone will last forever when its plugged in as well.

Unplug your phone, use it, and at 1%, take a screenshot. Unless you charge it up to 100% completely, it will never reset the counter and your results will be incorrect.

There is no point, you might end up with the same problem or even with a worse one.

I had mine replaced in Apple Store, still the same issue. So rather wait for the fix, its on Beta 2 now so it shouldnt be long.

How do people get theirs to not erase the usage statistics when they plug it in? Mine ALWAYS erases the usage when I plug it in, and says "Usage will reset upon full recharge" or something like that.

Or am I thinking of when I turn it off the usage resets?

I Have A Solution !

Severe battery drainage occurs when the processor is being used, not so much when its sitting in standby.

This is quite true.

I've been trying a few things I had not done prior to now.

Friday morning I set a timer to track my rate of discharge.

This morning over 72 hours later the phone still had 95% charge.

If only I would have thought of this sooner.

The fix?

Easy, I turned my iPhone 4S off, left it home... and used my SGS II over the weekend ha..ha..ha..ha.. :D

Usage stats are reset on a full charge cycle. If you keep topping it up with out filing the battery you can make your stats go on and on

:D :D he said 3 to 4 days with his 3G iphone hahahaha

Enough with the BS results.

I have an iPhone 4S on 5.0.1b2 and have performed a discharge.

Usage 7 hours 5 minutes
Standby 1 day 2 hours

This is with notifications ON, Siri is used once an hour, location services turned off.

This is 25% improved from 5.0.
