It’s supposed to get clipped into the air vents so you can see and use the phone while driving.
Obviously. It's a mount and charger. Here's a hint -- if you don't have wireless CarPlay, then you STILL have to plug in your lightning cable. Waste of $100. Another hint -- this device has nothing to do with CarPlay. It's a mount and a charger.

It’s nice until the phone starts to overheat from using GPS and charging at the same time..

I have a similar one and my 12PM overheats regularly when charging and gps, especially if it’s sunny outside.
I have their previous (slower) MagSafe car mount and when using wireless CarPlay my iPhone 12 Pro it will start to slowly discharge after about 15 minutes. The phone gets warm enough just running wireless CarPlay that it can't charge fast enough to keep up. If this new model is metal and can ask as a heat sink that might help.

I have a super cheap generic 7.5W MagSafe compatible vent charger, and it doesn’t overheat, but it also doesn’t lose charge as I’m using GPS and streaming music via wireless CarPlay.

The only way I’m careful with it is that I don’t use that vent if the heat is running, I switch it to windshield/floor vents only. Obviously, I do use that vent if I’m using AC.

I wonder if I just got lucky with my charger (which I bought months before any of the name brands I normally use were ready with MagSafe car chargers), because I keep hearing about weak magnets and not being up to charging. I’ve used this since December of 2020 with no issues.

Turn on the aircon :)

Sorry, I did hit "send" too soon, I was agreeing with you. Yes, it's a mount and charger for people who don't have CarPlay, and probably won't get it in their current car either, because that price tag would be a good chunk towards a CarPlay enabled aftermarket radio.

If I go with a wireless charging solution in my car, I’d more than likely choose this from ESR. It will probably keep your iPhone from overheating issues as well as being cheaper.

I have the ESR CryoBoost mount in both mine and my partners cars.

I adapted mine into a CD slot mount in my BMW F10.

My partner is using the supplied mount in her VW Touran. It works great and the lower supporting arm takes the weight off of the vent-slats.

Pleased with the purchase and would recommend, especially at the price point compared to Belkins £100+!

I have not been impressed with MagSafe and all but stopped using it. Too slow. Makes my device too hot. Great concept but the technology isn’t that great.

I like my current car mount, some generic one from Amazon that’s been discontinued apparently. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08TH7ND55?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

Holds my 12 mini and 14 Pro perfectly with or without a case. Though, the 14 Pro’s camera is so big, I have to turn the it sideways to get to mount properly.

The mount is nice because it has holes in the back of it to prevent it from getting overheated with the car’s heater on. Doesn’t look like the new Belkin one has this.

I’d like to buy another one for my fiancé, just have no idea when of if they’re ever coming back.

Just get this one. The best one I have tried so far (and I've tried quite a few) and I am keeping it. It may not be officially Magsafe certified but based on my testing I am getting close to 15W of wireless charging and you also get the Magsafe charging animation when you charge your iPhone (12 or later). Very strong magnet and very stable vent attachment with no wobbling. Just make sure to pair it with a USB-C 12 V port charger that is at least 25W PD.

This company has good products. I have a regular MagSafe mount that works great. I have 100% faith that it will hold my phone no matter how bumpy things become. Their vent clips are very well thought out.

But if you have the iPhone in PORTRAIT mode instead, then you can turn off the screen and only have it light up momentarily on navigation alerts or if you touch it, not to mention use the rest of the UI, which doesn’t support landscape consistently.

It does not always work and I don’t exactly want the AC when it’s cold outside.

I have Samsung S10 with Exynos SoC which is notorious for running hot even when you are not charging, I have vent mount and I already tested it in summer with direct sunlight + gps + charging, and phone was cold to touch. In winter its not cold to touch but the warm air coming out of the vent still cools it down, unless you set your heating to 30°C

Yup! A few weeks ago when it was still hot as balls here in Texas I got the “charging suspended until phone cools down” or words to that effect while connected to my car stereo using Apple Maps in CarPlay. And the USB port on the back of my radio only puts out 5V x 1.5A= 7.5W.
I get this a lot now and I'm in Pennsylvania. Wired CarPlay using maps and music and it overheats.

I bought this one for my Evo X and it works really well. My car handles bumps very poorly because of coilovers and I haven't ever had my iphone fall, but bumping it with my knee will cause it to fall. This one can be mounted with 3m adhesive or vent. I didn't want to block my vent so this was a really great option. It also doesn't take up much room.

I also plastidipped the cable so it wasn't as destracting. But really liking this set up a lot. I've spent so much over the years on different phone mounts.

How does the magnetic force / hold strength compare to an Apple OEM Magsafe puck?

50$ is fine. Twice that is insane with all the options you can use that also use usb c charging. Most are in the 15-35 range.
not many people will buy this at 100$

***Laughs in $16 scosche mount and magsafe charger I already have, I didn't have to buy at an apple store because Walmart sells them and doesn't block my vent when it's 103° degrees outside, because it sticks to my dash with 3M automotive tape***

Obligatory post: these “MagSafe” chargers are extremely energy inefficient. With gas prices through the roof, you’ll be doing yourself (and the environment) a favor by just plugging your phone in with a cord.

In the car is where that inefficiency doesn’t matter since the alternator spins the same no matter what electrical load you have going on.

Edit: Where I can see it mattering is on short trips where the phone doesn’t get charged up enough so has to be topped up with grid energy, though the strain there is minimal with such small devices.

Second Edit: I was was way off base. Please see incoherent_1’s reply and keep wireless charging to as little as possible.
