It’s supposed to get clipped into the air vents so you can see and use the phone while driving. What does this charger have to do with CarPlay?
Obviously. It's a mount and charger. Here's a hint -- if you don't have wireless CarPlay, then you STILL have to plug in your lightning cable. Waste of $100. Another hint -- this device has nothing to do with CarPlay. It's a mount and a charger. It’s supposed to get clipped into the air vents so you can see and use the phone while driving.
It’s nice until the phone starts to overheat from using GPS and charging at the same time..
I have a similar one and my 12PM overheats regularly when charging and gps, especially if it’s sunny outside.
I have their previous (slower) MagSafe car mount and when using wireless CarPlay my iPhone 12 Pro it will start to slowly discharge after about 15 minutes. The phone gets warm enough just running wireless CarPlay that it can't charge fast enough to keep up. If this new model is metal and can ask as a heat sink that might help.

Sorry, I did hit "send" too soon, I was agreeing with you. Yes, it's a mount and charger for people who don't have CarPlay, and probably won't get it in their current car either, because that price tag would be a good chunk towards a CarPlay enabled aftermarket radio.Obviously. If I go with a wireless charging solution in my car, I’d more than likely choose this from ESR. It will probably keep your iPhone from overheating issues as well as being cheaper.
This company has good products. I have a regular MagSafe mount that works great. I have 100% faith that it will hold my phone no matter how bumpy things become. Their vent clips are very well thought out.Just get this one. The best one I have tried so far (and I've tried quite a few) and I am keeping it. It may not be officially Magsafe certified but based on my testing I am getting close to 15W of wireless charging and you also get the Magsafe charging animation when you charge your iPhone (12 or later). Very strong magnet and very stable vent attachment with no wobbling. Just make sure to pair it with a USB-C 12 V port charger that is at least 25W PD.

Exactly what I did. Works great. You can also just buy a magsafe puck and sticky tape it somewhere in your car..
It does not always work and I don’t exactly want the AC when it’s cold outside.
I get this a lot now and I'm in Pennsylvania. Wired CarPlay using maps and music and it overheats.Yup! A few weeks ago when it was still hot as balls here in Texas I got the “charging suspended until phone cools down” or words to that effect while connected to my car stereo using Apple Maps in CarPlay. And the USB port on the back of my radio only puts out 5V x 1.5A= 7.5W.

In the car is where that inefficiency doesn’t matter since the alternator spins the same no matter what electrical load you have going on.Obligatory post: these “MagSafe” chargers are extremely energy inefficient. With gas prices through the roof, you’ll be doing yourself (and the environment) a favor by just plugging your phone in with a cord.
