Guinness here is pretty bad because they have to treat it so that it survives the trip/the climate.

You should be able to stand a knife straight up in Guinness and have it stay standing straight up.

You've obviously never had beer-battered fish, or sausages cooked in beer, or Carbonade. :p

My Mum's Meatballs Carbonade is one of my most favourite meals. Plenty of beer in it too. I really should get the recipe off her, one for the meatballs, one for me, one for the meatballs, ah bugger it chug chug chug chug... now what was I doing?

Unless it's Nigerian Guinness, a different beast entirely. Good stuff.

What's the difference? Does the Nigerian stuff make you more likely to give total strangers your bank account details when you're just about to deliver a technicolour yawn?

"Now Pister Moliceman, there's no blood in my alcohol but before I park the tiger I want to tell you my BSB and account number....blergh...oh sorry drunkstable..."

Beers like Nigerian Guinness is brewed stronger because of the climate alcohol gets messed up by heat see also New Guinean,Indian and various South Pacific beers. Not Oz or NZ obv. *goes back to garden for lie down*

I'm not a huge fan of beer, but..

I also make a pot roast with beer. So yes, there are some exceptions that prove the rule.

Man, not while I'm drinking coffee... Not that I disagree mind you.

They are slowly expanding. I heard they opened a second brewery (actually bought it) in Florida. Their strategy is to get incredible market saturation someplace and then slowly expand. If they are there then they are there. If not you can't find it.

Yeah. Here in the Philly area, you can go into a bar and ask for a "Lager" and they know what you are talking about. I was just in Florida last week and tried the same thing. The server asked if I meant "Yuengling" and I said yes. Give it another year or two and Florida will know what a "Lager" is.

Guinness is actually decent coming out of a can though, for a strange reason.

I'll have to give that a try.

Poured into the glass very slowly like the on-tap, or straight down and quick like some others?

Some of my favorites:

Blue moon
Oberon (Bell's Brewery down the road in Kalamazoo)
Tanner Jack (from England)

Also I really love the Belgium Beers especially Tappist

Come to think of it I am a bit thirsty right now

Hmmm...

1. Make cheap nasty beer
2. sell it abroad
3. ?????
4. profit!!!

It's been done. While going to school in Preston (England) a number of years ago, I wandered into the local supermarket (Sainsbury's?) and saw the ultimate travesty,

Thunderbird ...with the tagline, "the American Classic."

Scary? No.
Horrifying? Yes.

But for favorite beers available in the US, I would go with the following, but not necessarily in this order (and please excuse my spelling):

1. Guinness on tap or can
2. Hooegaarden
3. Sam Adams Nut Brown
4. Sam Adams Boston Ale (Brewmaster Collection)
5. Erdinger Weissbier
6. Franziskahner Weissbier
7. Bass
8. Fullers Extra Special Bitter
9. Theakston
10. Samuel Smiths IPA

That's all I can think of right now....

Oddly, when I think of crap beer served up overseas my mind goes straight to....

Fosters.

Nary a drop hath passed my lips yet I know it's bloody awful - judging from the fact that you can't buy it in pubs and nobody would buy it anyway.

Paul Hogan may think it "tastes like an angel crying on ya' tongue" but I reckon it tastes like crap.

For some reason, your large Carlsberg logo reminds me of the award-winning Carlton advert, featuring vistas and extras reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings.

You definitely need sound for this one...stereo is better!!

Indeed, Guinness on tap, done by someone who knows what he's doing is the best beer ever. So Guinness is my vote.

But in bottles, ugh.

Guinness is actually decent coming out of a can though, for a strange reason.

Yeah, its not bad out of a can. not a huge fan of the bottles, but I can handle it if its there. On tap is obviously an entirely different animal though.

Its funny how much variance there is with guiness though. I guess its got to do with the nitrogen mixture used or something like that. Some places have great guiness. Other places just don't.

One of my major problems with some bars is that they serve guiness much too cold. Its not an american pilsner which is supposed to be ice cold. I prefer it just slightly chilled. When I get an ice cold guiness I have to wrap my ahnds around the glass and let it warm up for a few minutes before I start drinking.

I also forgot to earlier mention that Bass is great too. Especially in a black and tan.

...but if you're on the East Coast, its only an hour to 5!
:D

Then again, if you're in the UK, you've already been drinking for four hours. Unless you've nipped down to the pub for lunch...

I really like Lost Coast's Great White. I'll also drink Sierra Nevada's Wheat.

...Belgian Style! I live in Belgium and we've got no Great Whites arond here. Much less any palm trees...Kind of a pitty really, for it would make diving a lot more interesting and I would not have to fly to South Africa to "mingle" with them

On the beer side, there are around 800, many of which can be found in the U.S. if you are willing to pay for them. A Leffe triple is always a treat as is a nice Chimay. And, for those really rare warm days (we don't get many) a nice blanche, like a Hoogarden is the top.

I just came back from GA last week...Can't say I've found any new beers worth remembering but good ribs at Fats Matts...:p

Well, if everyone else has opened this up to include non-USAian beers, then I might as well go along with it. I'm rather partial to a pint or three of Black Sheep or Deuchars.

It's a fine day when they're both on as guest ales in our local tavern. :)

Mmm, I drink more lagers than ales, but Black Sheep is probably my favourite ale. That and Adnams...
