Best Buy has to be one of the worst run companies anywhere...What a bunch of fools. There is a reason their reputation sucks..
While I have often felt hatred coursing through my veins towards best buy on multiple occasions, I keep myself grounded by thinking of the following in their defense:
- They are the final remaining major consumer electronics retail chain that hasn't been killed by the Internet.
- I can go there and look at, and actually hold physical goods that I am considering, which I can't do online.
- While their internal computer systems generally suck, and their inventory systems and order managment are not as good as they should be, the retail electronics game has changed only recently (call it 2009ish) in the grand scheme of things and they're still getting up to speed.
- Apple, the company that changed the game in retail and who they compete with, is a tech company that has a $684 Billion market cap, the finest minds in the world, and the deepest pool of engineering resources on the planet. And they are the yardstick against which we measure Best Buy?
- They're fighting massive price pressure from online outlets. How they make any money with their price matching is beyond me. There's been many, many times when I've walked out of there feeling like I just fleeced them by using an online offer of some sort, coupled with some internal promotion they're running.
- Many of the inventory issues (such as the one many of us on this thread have been dealing with) are caused by the fact that they are beholden to traditional supply chain issues, despite enhanced consumer service expectations. So they get a bad reputation.
- So they get a bad reputation because there is a disconnect between consumer expectation and realities of the supply chain (resulting in angry customers at the point of sale), made worse by imperfect inventory systems - so naturally, they have a tough time attracting talent to work there (though there are still many great people that work there), which feeds back into the customer experience.
So I cut them some slack, and for must-have launch events, look elsewhere.
