I was underwhelmed with season 1 of BCS. Not so much that I wouldn't keep watching, though.

AMC and HBO have really succumbed to the superiority of FX

What did you find underwhelming about the 1st season? I agree that its obviously a let down from BB, but thats partly because BB was so good and they left us wanting more and this obviously doesn't live up to those expectations.

Just curious what you think could make it better?

Oh not talking trash, just interested in what you didn't like about it?

It just wasn't very exciting. It was a thing. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. In a period where so many great shows are on TV, Better Call Saul just gets lost in the mix.

I found it enjoyable too and am looking forward to the upcoming season. Granted there are better shows on air than BCS, but we are being spoilt for viewing content of late!

I agree, although for me this is the money season for tv. BCS, House of Cards, Game Of Thrones are all starting within the next few months. BCS definitely isn't the best show on television by any stretch, but its pretty enjoyable for me.

I think it's pretty fantastic, and I (we) like the slower burn. Brilliant acting, terrific additional context for BB, love Mike's story, I dig how it works on it's own and as a pre-seq at the same time.

I'd say it is one of the best shows on TV. For context other shows we watch, i.e., they're still in production but may be between seasons/breaks or an assumption there will be another season:

Fargo
The Leftovers
Mr. Robot
Game of Thrones
Silicon Valley
Bates Motel
Walking Dead
Penny Dreadful
House of Lies
House of Cards
House of Houses (OK, made that one up)

Love some animation too:

Bob's Burgers
Rick and Morty
Gravity Falls (technically just ended)
Adventure Time
Simpsons

Previous favorites for more context:

Justified
The Shield
The Sopranos
Breaking Bad
Deadwood

Its definitely a slower pace than BB was. I will say though, last season's scene with Mike talking about his son with his son's ex wife.........that was 1 of the best scenes of either shows

A very flat first episode of season 2. I suspect something will happen to truly spark it, maybe next week. Gus Fring has to come into it at some point. And Hector of course. I would expect a cameo from Jesse at least as he was definitely aware of Saul Goodman prior to his adventures with Walter White.

The first season was great! I also loved the first episode of season 2. Can't wait to see where things lead. It also completes my 3 day show cycle. Saturday night, i watch Akame Ga Kill! on Toonami, (even though next weeks episode is technically the last one) Sunday nights, are for The Walking Dead, and Mondays are for Better Call Saul.

Love it.

Not a bad first episode to open the second season.

And for those trying to compare it to Breaking Bad...stop. It's not the same. It is it's own thing. Some of the same actors and same producers...but it's not Breaking Bad, so don't compare it and stop hoping for it to be the same thing. Appreciate it (or don't) for what it is.

THIS. Yes.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my friend the other day. I was trying to get my friend to watch Better Call Saul and she asks "Do you have to watch Breaking Bad to understand it?" And i said no. Really, the only benefit of watching Breaking Bad before hand is knowing who some of the characters are (Jimmy, Mike, Tuco)

I watched the new episode today. I was amused at all the characters "returning" from Breaking Bad. Can't wait to see what happens this season.

I saw today Variety posted the ratings for it and its off to a solid start. It kicked off a good season with The Walking Dead for AMC. Although "Talking Dead" scored a ton more viewers than "Talking Saul" which had less than a million haha.

As far as the comparing it to BB I agree it needs to be judged on its own. However, in some ways I think the writers are making that hard. I know it will involve a lot of the same characters, it has to because its a spinoff prequel, but they keep dropping other "easter eggs" as they call it.....and it just will keep drawing more comparisons to BB until they stop doing stuff like that. For instance, Mike is obviously a necessary character to bring back as is Gus Fring.........the dick stock broker who Walt blew up his BMW and the tequila Gus used to poison the cartel guy........not necessary.

I'm a fan of the second season so far, usually 1st episodes are never super exciting as they set the table for the rest of the season. I know this goes against what I just said about comparing it to BB haha, but one thing I loved about the last season is how in episode 1 is when Walt calls out Hank for the tracking device........I figured it would be a cat and mouse game most of the season and then BOOM episode 1 they are knee deep.

I was also POSITIVE that Kim was going to put Jimmy in the friend zone......super surprised they hooked up.

I thought the first season could have been condensed to 2-3 episodes. At current rate, it will be season 5 before he changes name to "saul".

I enjoyed the first episode of season 2. I would say I definitely fit in the casual viewer category. I like the show and it entertains me. That is all I'm looking for. I'm definitely not a "super fan" because I didn't catch any of the Breaking Bad connections that have been previously mentioned in this thread. But, I would call myself a casual viewer of Breaking Bad also. I binge watched it sometime last year and enjoyed the show.

I don't think anyone is seeing it as 'Breaking Bad' but it has won it's viewership largely from the well known character of Saul Goodman and people are expecting to see his eventual rise to success. That will most likely come with run ins with other Breaking Bad characters. Also, people can compare it to whatever they like. And you can disagree however you like, but it would be super cool if you could lay off the childish 'so don't compare it and stop hoping for' remarks.

In my opinion, having watched all available episodes as of 24 Feb, this show might not have got past pilot if it didn't have Breaking Bad come before it. I am enjoying it but definitely not hooked on it.

It's childish to ask people to not compare it to a show that it is nothing like, other than a few characters that overlap? People are expecting it to be a Breaking Bad prequel or sequel, and it isn't. Recommending that people calibrate their comparisons and expectations seems fair??

I thought the first season was slow and awful, but so far this season is better, though there still seems to be a lot of scenes that are irrelevant and time consuming.

Well no, it's childish to demand that they do. People will choose to compare it to Breaking Bad and there is nothing wrong with that. Breaking Bad setup the story for Saul Goodman and his eventual circumstances of disappearing. Nothing wrong with expecting to see more links. I certainly haven't expected it to be panic from start to finish but I was expecting a pace a little faster than what it is.

I will say I didn't like watching Jimmy pre Saul because he seemed very sad haha. I like this season so far too.

I will say though, last year's episode with Mike's speech is 1 of the better scenes of the whole "Breaking Bad" universe.
