No, it just means they'd rather keep the extra 13-11%.

This.

Eff 'em. I got all of Steve Jobs' "Come down Friday for our one day-only business-as-usual event!" Emails, and I sent them straight to the trash. I get better deals through my employer, and they're not even affilliated with (or a retail channel for) Apple. 8% is a dismal joke, especially considering their market cap and record profitability during a major recession.

You want real savings on Apple products, buy from Amazon.

Not much savings, in fact I can save a lot more with the "Military/Government Purchase Program" (I work for the DOD)

The MacBook Pro 15" i7 I have had my eye on will cost me $114 more with the Black Friday price then it would any other day with the Government discount, plus Apple Care will cost an addition $110 on Black Friday ($224 extra for Black Friday, Thanks Mr. Jobs!)

And it looks like you can't combine savings.

Figures someone who works for the government doesn't understand economics or capitalism. It's not enough that other Apple customers subsidize your govt discount, you want even more. Perhaps all govt workers should get Apple products for free and the private sector prices should increase accordingly. Maybe the student discount should be 100% as well in order to placate the so called 'student' rioters in England.

If it wasn't for Apple's student discount, I wouldn't have been able to afford my Macbook I used for two years at college and the first year of University, or the iMac I've just purchased.

As for student rioters, we have a damn right to protest. Being told to pay up to £9000 a year by people who received free education.

Finally, someone who understands retail and what the purpose of a sale is.

Hardly. I see this kind of reaction all the time, and while blaming the "entitled" consumer is always good, sanctimonious fun, it misses the point completely. I don't feel "entitled" to a discount at all. On the other hand, if you want me to take you seriously as a retailer claiming to do me a favor, you have to do a little better than the bare minimum.

So, to the OP's point, if the purpose was to drive people to a purchase, congrats, they failed. There are a ton of people out there who will impulsively plop down their credit cards, but if this thread is at all indicative, there are just as many -if not more- who are completely unmotivated, because at the end of the day, this is only a "sale" to folks who don't know any better.

I picked up a 13" MBP base at the Marine Corps Exchange this morning (Black Friday) for $979. That's $220 less than MSRP, and it's the lowest I've seen anywhere so far (more than 18% off!). Add to that the fact that I didn't have to pay sales tax (7.75% here), and I saved $295.87 today. WOOT!

Meh...
I was hoping to buy a Mac Mini 2.66Ghz today but the discounts are not compelling enough for me
Though I did buy a leather jacket online at Macy's this morning
Some day I'll get you ...Mac Mini

The concept of paying for it yourself is beyond the ability of some to grasp. And the rioters are not all students. Rather they are nothing more than anarchists. Sad to see a once great nation turned into nothing more than a social welfare state with far too many people fighting for a place at the public teat.

So, to the OP's point, if the purpose was to drive people to a purchase, congrats, they failed.
They failed with you, not everyone or other professional whiners who believe they are owed something.

Will I still get sale price if I "upgrade" the MBA? I want to get a 13" with 4GB of RAM.

What do ya's think?

Yes. And if you're a student you receive that price as well. You receive $101 off the base price and $10 off the 4G RAM upgrade.

What discount have you been getting as a Government worker? I have been paying full price but would be interested to know if/how and how much of a discount I could get.

Just in case you haven't seen it before (a lot of people miss it), there is a link in the upper left corner to take you to the Government Store. The discounts typically are on par with those in the Education Store. You will still want to compare prices with places like Amazon, especially if you are an Amazon Prime member.

Hope this helps.

Figures someone who works for the government doesn't understand economics or capitalism.

I don't think you understood my post. I am not expecting a giant discount from Apple. I just thought that on Black Friday, they would offer something at least equal to the government/student/employee discount to everyone (which is not huge, btw)

I know Apple's products are more expensive then others, because they are worth more! I also know that Apple does not have huge mark downs. I am not expecting 50% off on Black Friday. I was expecting around 10% (not on top of existing discounts, just 10% available to those who would not be able to get them, for one day a year mind you. Have you heard about this Black Friday thing before?)

And how is it that other companies that do offer some large discounts on Black Friday every year have been able to stay in business year after year?

Do you really think the normal prices on their products are higher than they would be because of government/student/employee discounts? Do you really think that a 10% discount is so much that Apple would go bankrupt if they didn't raise their prices on the products for everyone else to make up for it?

Looks like you are the one who doesn't understand economics. And I pay my taxes, so don't imagine that I separate myself from people who don't work for the government. I don't just expect a discount, but I am eligible for one, so I am happy to take it. You should not make assumptions about people you know nothing about, my friend.

My, my... such hostility and whining in some posts. If you don't want the 8-12% don't buy it! Of course, you could always go down to Wally World and buy some substandard crap for $200 if that makes you happy too.

Don't you get it???? Deep discounts come on products that don't sell or are built to be discounted... in other words... JUNK... Apple products sell... hence... no deep discount!

To all the johnny come latelys complaining about the lack of deeper discounts, this is completely on par with what Apple usually offers for Black Friday. So buy or don't.

I personally would have like to see Apple TV make the list, at $88 I would have picked up the new model, but now I will probably wait until we get more info in the next year as to any more changes to its iOS and see what happens when ATV Flash gets updated for the current model.

BTW... I almost hate to post this here... but my daughter who is college age has bought several Macs at a school discount that is never verified. At least not in the past... not sure now. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean? :D

while i get your point, i think it's generally poor form for a company that has their own retail channel (apple stores, in this case) to undercut their retail partners... leave the "real discounts" to macmall, mac connection, amazon, etc...

pretty common knowledge.. i always do an "education check" when buying apple products. :D

I have read that Apple does not verify because of the extra cost to do so not being worth it when they are still making a very nice profit selling at 10% off to the few who cheat their system (Not that your daughter cheated, just that someone else could use the student discount and not get verified.

Everyone please stop feeding the troll.

blah, blah, blah

Companies do not have Black Friday sales to save you money. They have them to move products, get people in the brick and mortar stores so they buy other things, same for online stores. The deep discounts are called loss leaders. Apple doesn't have problems moving most of their products so there's almost no need for a sale, at any time. Try again.

You pay your taxes. Big deal.

Ah, you are very mature I see :)

-10% is not a deep discount. I don't expect a deep discount.
-If they don't need a sale (which they don't, anyone who has been in an Apple store can see that with their own eyes!) then why bother doing anything for Black Friday? They would still be very successful without it. But they did and many people here wish to express their opinions about it. Go figure!

Why does this bother you so much? I am not looking for a lower price than I can get on any other day of the year. I am not expecting a deal. I guess trolls are really green.:D

You pay your taxes. Big deal.

I don't "want a cookie" for paying taxes, you seem to think a lot about it (it's in your signature!) so I addressed something you mentioned. You made it a big deal. That is what trolls do.

For those of you looking at the Apple BF discount on Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac Family (3 licenses) I will point out that Amazon has it today for $20 cheaper and for most of us without sales tax. I think that price will be good through the weekend.

We don't have a military/government discount here in Canada like the US. Our education discount excludes students K-12, is it the same in the US? At any rate, our edu discount is $51 so today's discount trumps that!

Apple's Black Fridays are in June and in March. Oh I think there was one sometime in October.

Apple is always in the black because of their products. They don't actually need to slash anything in prices, they just do it to humor the rest of us.

It's like April Fools. Except it's in November. On the 26th. On a Friday.

That is a great point. The Student/Government/Employee discounts are just to humor us as well.

Virtually every very person I have talked to at an Apple store has an iPhone (I know of a single one who has something else, an Android! And he gets hell for it!) . And the times that my wife, son or I have purchased an iPhone at a retail store (my last iPhone was purchased online) the person who processed the sale/activation used their personal iPhone as a sales tool for the phone and accessories. Apple, you can't help these people out a little more? They are making you money (well, at least helping a bit, the products generally sell themselves!)
