I would certainly buy one and I would buy it over iPAD anytime and anyday IF:
- equal screen quality (this is a must)!!!
- a USB port and can be used as a USB hosting device to connect my mp3 player
- no F%$%ing synching and that means I would be able to upload files like to flashdrive
- stable OS
I am very happy and pleased that is starting to be a competition to iPAD. Steve Jobs is already limiting its iPADs too much at what they MAY and MAY NOT do. This will force to guy to come out of the cave. Seriously Bravo for blackberry. I don't know why everybody is so negative about the competition, be happy, we are the ones who are going to profit from it.

Wow. Blackberry's much smaller device will cost the same as an iPad.

That should really hurt iPad sales.

It's the only pricing out of all the iPad competitors that actually makes sense. Most of the other tablets are more expensive than the iPad, which coupled with other shortcomings, makes them DOA.

This device is at least priced competitively and offers 3G tethering to those who already own Blackberry's. Anyone who already owns a Blackberry and doesn't want to pay extra for 3G might go for this.

WTF? A bunch of technophiles are focused on screen size?

The majority of comments here seem to be focused on screen size for the price. WTF?!!? Has anyone bothered to check the specs on the Playbook:
http://us.blackberry.com/playbook-tablet/

1GHz Dual-core
1GB RAM
USB

Take a look before blowing it off. It might be a very nice device. The demos are actually pretty impressive, especially regarding multi-tasking.

I'd need to hold both in my hands to see which form factor I prefer, but I suspect a lot of people would rather have a 7 inch tablet.

Hardware requires software. You could have the nicest hardware in the world and a slick OS but without software, it is just an expensive toy that you can play with and show off to your friends. 7" tablets are too small. They are in the valley of not quite being small enough to be a phone but not big enough to use as a tablet.

And what happens if Apple decides to keep selling the Gen 1 iPad at an entry level price of $399 when the iPad 2 is released next March?

haha that would be pretty sweet.... they'd be unstoppable...the 1st gen would be lower price than competitions 2nd gen/newer tablet and would still be better lol (maybe not, but 400$ for that would be a steal at 1 gen old)

The screen is by far the most expensive part of the iPad. So having a significantly smaller screen should allow for a significantly less expensive device...

Or in this case maybe not.

Since the device is essentially one big screen, that is the most important spec, way more than any of the things you listed.

Someone else suggested maybe some people will prefer a 7" form factor, and maybe some will...

I suspect most will not. Especially for the same price.

It would surprise anyone who's paid attention to their business plan and have noted that they don't do price changes with new products. You might see a lower price for an older generation - but the new device with have the same entry point (or worst case - higher which is unlikely)

Apple TV 1st Gen $299
Apple TV 2nd Gen $99

But this is exactly how the iphone/ipad universe works --- you download a fart app, show it to your friends and then chuck the app after 2-3 days.

... is set to debut in the first quarter of 2011 with an entry price of "under" $500, putting the device at or below the price point of Apple's iPad.

$499.999999999999999999999999999999999repeating.

What IS interesting is that the product is less for the same price... it's like Jobs' recent philosophy with the Nano. So basically this device is a tablet for people that hate Apple so much they will take less at the same price and have something they can show around to prove they AREN'T Apple fanboys.

Or they already have a BlackBerry (as many, many do) in which case the integration and tethering ability make sense. Unless you think owning a BB = hating Apple...

not comparable. two completely different devices that they just used the same name. The hardware involves is so radically different. That won't be the case with the next iPad just like it's never that different for the iPhone. And before someone jumps on the fact that the iPhone is very different - I'm talking overall hardware and costs/etc.

You can't compare ATV1 and TV2.

Where do you get your numbers? How come the little iPhone costs about the same as iPad?

Well, how come the iPod touch which is about the same size as iPhone costs a lot less? iPod vs iPad would be a more fair comparison.

But I also wonder where did the numbers come from?

RIM should not market this saying it is cheaper than the iPad. First that sounds like it is cheaper in quality, not price. Even if the price is cheaper you want it to sound like it is better. Second, I believe it appeals more to business.

"Appeals more to business" means that they can't make a tablet the general public wants. iPad owns this market to an embarrassing degree, and everyone knows it. Their excuse is (and will be) that their device is meant for businesses, and why would it sell well with the general public? Excuses. They would love to be able to have the same user base as the iPad. Competition is great, but nobody has yet made another tablet worth a damn.

That MIGHT be the relevant stat. There might be relevant ergonomic factors connected to screen size (a couple reviewers of the Galaxy mention the 7" size to be very awkward for typing) and it might be a deal breaker at that price (and might be more palatable at a distinctly lower price).

iPod prices have changed also

Well I am not sure about screen quality but your 3 based on rims history.
USB port will be able to use as USB hosting.
It will be able to use as like a flash drive (more than likely dumping everything to the SD card on it)
It is RIM. The OS will be stable.
