Lightning is dead. The only reason Apple is delaying the switch is to maximise their profit on it. I'd prefer the next iPhone had no charging port than a corpse lightning port.
Wireless charging takes far too long of course when in a rush. It also doesn’t help if the device is in a stand or something.

I reckon they will make sure that any existing non-Apple wireless charger will not work or work very poorly just to punish the early adopters. What are the chances?

Your comment is SUPER confusing.

iPhones have had wireless charging for years now, so what are you talking about??
There is no Apple wireless charger, thus ALL wireless charging since inception has been from “non-Apple” wireless chargers, so what are you talking about??
Lastly... the convo you’re currently in is about neither non-Apple wireless chargers, nor nonexistent Apple branded wireless chargers; it’s about using the back of your 2019 iPhone as a charging mat, so again I’m wondering: what are you talking about??

Lol, you are going to have to rewrite that ENTIRE post & have it actually make sense before anyone can answer your question. As it stands, “what are the chances?” w/ a bunch of nonsense written before it leaves no context for an answer... you could be just as well asking “so, exactly how many turnips does it take to properly elephant?”... any answer given, still won’t make the question make sense.

5W lightning also takes far too long for modern phone battery capacities

That’s why some people use higher capacity chargers with their Lightning iPhones. 12 W iPad chargers are a very popular choice. Even better are the 18+ Watt chargers.

bring back the headphone jack and I’ll throw down my money even if there’s no other upgrade from the 2018 lineup. ;)

I personally think using ‘i’ before the name of the product has become outdated and Apple has increasingly made this clear for years now by not using it. iWatch wouldn’t sound that great, kind of unprofessional if you ask me and Apple came to the same conclusion. This is actually the kind of change I would expect Apple to do eventually. Of course, you can continue to call it iPhone if you would like.

I’m not sure how can a brand become outdated... it’s a very strong name and if Apple drops it, someone else may pick it up and will be right. ‘Apple Phone’ is too boring, long and dumb. Like ‘Windows Phone’ or ‘Google Phone’. And they are still using other names for their products. AirPods, not Apple Pods.

iWatch may not sound great now because we are used to ‘Apple Watch’. But there’s nothing unprofessional to it. Just like iPod, iMac or iPhone.

But it’s ok to disagree.

Think the centred logo and absence of the iPhone branding (if true) looks quite smart. The renders by Ben Geskin in the 'what to expect' thread look really clean, a lot better than the first round of renders with black camera square and the logo and iPhone branding in the usual places.

Centered logo who gives a $&@“ lol jk.

2019 iPhones will feature a centered Apple logo on the back of the devices, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The centered logo will help users know where to place their Apple Watch or AirPods case to charge on the back of the upcoming iPhones, which are widely expected to have a new Qi-based device-to-device charging feature, similar to Wireless PowerShare on Samsung's latest Galaxy smartphones.

In late July, an alleged Foxconn worker claimed that there will be no "iPhone" branding on the back of the iPhone 11 models, and this certainly seems more likely in light of this centered Apple logo rumor.

Taking both rumors into account, concept designer Ben Geskin has mocked up how the iPhone 11 models should look:

Gurman also reiterated that iPhone 11 models will have more shatter-resistant glass and improved water resistance, the iPhone XR will come in a new green color, and that this year's Apple Watch refresh will be relatively minor, with a focus on new ceramic and titanium casing finishes and watchOS 6.

We're just three days away from Apple's event at Steve Jobs Theater, which kicks off Tuesday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple will be live streaming the event via its website, the Apple Events app on Apple TV, and YouTube. MacRumors will have full coverage of the announcements as they unfold -- stay tuned!

I know right? New Sony Walkman will probably have a much better dac anyway.

I guess this would be a nice feature if you're really in a pinch but I can't see myself ever using this. My watch goes so long on a charge and charges so quickly it's never an issue for me.

I can’t see myself using this feature either. I have a charger block that I carry with me that charges quick. I always resort to that to charge my devices quickly while on the go.

I am excited about the next iPhone but please Apple make the camera bump black on all models like the current X and Xs. I am soo hating the same color camera bump

I actually like the color camera bump. I think the camera bump would look weird on the gold and silver phones if it was black. The color camera bump make the back of the phone look better.

thanks for letting us know. Everyone here was holding their breath waiting to hear when Mr Dee would upgrade his iPhone.
Thanks for making it your concern.

When your laptop, tablet, wireless headphones, and Nintendo Switch all charge with USB-C there is a clear benefit to not carrying a different cable that only exists to pad Tim's bonus.
There are 100x more lightning cables, adapters and accessories in the world than USB-C so saying that lightning is dead is absurd. Lightning might be a dead end technology but it could takes years before anyone is affected by its limitations. Right now its only limitations are minor speed and power delivery issues that no one even notices. USB-C compatibility between all devices just looks nice on paper but has little real world consequences.

Apple has always embraced proprietary connections just like they embrace their own app store, OS and ecosystem. their customers actually prefer that. Adding USB-C to iPhone will make little difference to anyone and will piss off the majority of users.

No one notices it takes 4 hours to charge an XS Max whereas cheaper phones with larger batteries charge in a quarter of the time?

1. I keep my phones for several years, so not having 5G in the phone means no 5G service for that entire period.
2. I live in Canada's biggest city, where 5G is coming in 2019/2020, and getting more fleshed out in 2020.
3. I am on the lone nationwide wireless provider that hadn't planned on using Huawei for 5G, which means their 5G plans won't be delayed if Canada decides to ban Huawei. Rogers/Fido is using Ericsson for 5G.

So, timing is perfect for me to wait a year for a 5G iPhone in 2020, after 4 years with the dual-lens 3 GB RAM iPhone 7 Plus... which is still being sold by Apple by the way. It's still a very good iPhone, and runs iOS 13 beautifully.
Great post; in the same situation. And the person you replied to obviously doesn’t realize the 5G rollout won’t be linear; it’s going to pick iPhone pace as the providers either use it to attract new customers - or keep up with the competition.

PS - thanks for beta testing 13 on the 7+

This is a limitation of the supplied charging block though, not the connector. It's a lot quicker even using a 12W iPad charger. If you use the USB C to lightning cable you can use the MacBook Pro's 87W brick to fast charge...
