We all are...

Can TimeMachine see it? Script or not doesn't matter if automated backup triggers the script.

The cloud is something to be afraid of and distrust. There are so many reasons to hate the stupid cloud. Cloud solutions have failed under every other name, how does making it sound whispy make it more reliable and safe?

I'll sell when I see someone ready to replace Apple. They've stumbled hard here, no doubt, but there's no one else to replace them yet-- which is a sad commentary in the industry, frankly...

Which means it sucks almost 4 days a year.

Have you worked for him? I'd be really curious to hear more detail on how he avoided these kinds of messes.

If you can give specifics, this really could be a learning opportunity for a lot of development groups.

I used Apple software before, during and after Forstall. During was best.

I lost all of my documents in pages across all of my devices as well as iCloud. After calling Apple, they eventually checked with their engineers about possibly retrieving my documents, and this is the response I received.

"Hey XXXX,

I just heard back from the engineers and they said they are unable to restore any of those documents.

I have requested more information on the reasoning behind not being able to restore those documents but I do apologize for the major inconvenience this has caused..."

I agree. iOS 8/iCloud has been extremely sloppy lately, but I've gotta admit, I'm very impressed by Yosemite. It works very smoothly and seems to hold up better under pressure than Mavericks. I'll have to wait until it's officially released and see how it goes when using it on a daily basis, but so far, I'm definitely impressed.

What do you think?

Yes, I really like it too. Lot's of nice subtle improvements....

Inconvenience? Wow just wow.

Same...

I can also confirm that this happened to me. However, it only deleted all of my Numbers files. All of my Pages files were still intact. No idea why. I quickly moved them to my computer and will back-up through Time Machine from now on.

Thinking about going back to Google Drive, Dropbox and/or OneDrive as well.

Contacted Apple support. Very helpful. They took lots of info and passed it along to the engineering team. I doubt I'll see the documents again.

Good luck to everyone else! :apple: :(

how long time passed between you contacting apple and this response?

That's like saying, Cheetah to Jaguar wasn't as big an update as Tiger to Leopard. They are completely different times (2001 vs 2007). In 2007 there are bigger software advances, better hardware and better services. That's why it's pointless comparing early iOS updates with iOS 8.

You just proved my point. iOS 8 is a bigger release than any version since 1.0 precisely because of bigger software advances. Apple Pay, HealthKit, Continuity, Handoff. All these integrations with other systems create vastly more technical complexity (and hence, opportunity for bugs) than adding some new APIs and UI updates. Comparing iOS8 to older releases for the purpose of seeing how much additional work Apple engineers have now is completely relevant.

Lots of recent "mistakes", "issues" and "inconveniences" lately. I wonder what Steve would do if here were still around.

I hear disappointment in the air when it wasn't there when Steve was around. :(

Heads would be rolling. Many people would be fired. This has all gotten out of control.

Why would anybody trust iCloud with their files? After the MobileMe horror, the failing photo streams, iCloud sync, iMessage sync, Siri unavailability, iTunes Match and Maps issues, I don't see any reason why anybody would consider using iCloud drive.

Everybody knows, or should know, that iCloud is a black box where neither developers nor end users have any control over, there's no backup mechanism, it's terribly slow and flaky, ... It just works, until it doesn't. And then there's nothing you can do.

Apple is great at many things, but web services is not one of them. Period.

This happened to me as well... VERY disappointed in Apple's software gaffes lately.

Apple is really lacking in the software and web infrastructure department lately. Time to get their **** together or find some new talent.

They historically practically always lacked and continue lacking in that (web/cloud) area.

This is the sort of problem that people should really be concerned about. The biggest problem with Apple's Cloud initiatives thus far is no backup or fallback solutions. Given that this isn't the first time they've had problems in this area since launching iCloud, it should be a matter of concern for users who aren't on Macs and running Time Machine backups at all points in time.

Bendgate was a joke. People will survive with Healthkit being late. Bugs are bugs, they happen. But Apple needs to really get with the program with better backup, safety, rollback, whatever options for iCloud if we're supposed to really trust it with our documents.

I've had no major issues myself with iCloud, at least in a long while, since the first month or so of launch of iOS 5, but I can't say it enough: Apple needs a better backup solution for iCloud data. It's just absurd how little control users have. Hopefully iCloud Drive is a first step in the direction of becoming a more robust cloud platform, but it absolutely bothers me that they haven't done more to address this glaring omission thus far, and it's my chief concern with iCloud Photo Storage moving forward.

Tim needs to double down on the T and V.

That's Testing and Verification not Tonic and Vodka, although he probably needs to double down on that as well come to think of it.

Good one :p
This is a massive failure from Apple..
And since this is a universal issue it will affect everybody who has used or will use Reset All Settings.
I got chills just thinking about so many people losing their files from iCloud.

I can confirm the existence of the bug, since I experienced this issue firsthand.

I lost most of the contents of my iCloud Drive after AppleCare asked me to Reset All Settings. Unfortunately, the call was already over by the time I noticed it. However, as reported, I have been able to recover files from a Time Machine backup (your iCloud Drive files are in ~/Library/Mobile Documents).

That's unreal. I was looking forward to switching wholesale to iCloud Drive from OneDrive and others. But no more. This is not the first I've heard of iCloud just deleting documents. I cannot believe the blunders Apple is making in this realm.

If you don't backup your stuff you're asking for trouble. Maybe you can ask for an iPhone case for your troubles. :/

I've noticed that a lot of people on here are talking about continuing to use OneDrive over iCloud Drive, while hardly anyone is talking about using Google Drive.

Why do so many people prefer OneDrive to Google Drive?

Because quite simply, people trust Microsoft with their data more than they trust Google.
