Apple doesn't seem to have a good solution for backing up your iCloud account. As today's incident has proven, this is going to become a serious problem if they don't come up with one soon.

iCloud needs to be treated just like any other storage media: It must be backed up. Your data MUST be in more than one location, preferably three locations. People who don't realize this are going to get burned; the question is not "if" but "when".

This issue did not affect me because I don't trust the cloud. At all. You shouldn't either. The only positive thing about this is that it will make people distrust the cloud as the only storage place for their data.

The cloud can refer to any networked storage. I back up my documents to an offsite server with is no different than using apple's servers. Local storage would offer no protection in an event of a fire or theft (theives are likely to take my external ssd when they take my macs).

The cloud is not something to be afraid off or distrust. Just maybe stay away from apple's storage solutions until they get it right. :p

Or backup and then there aren't any issues.

You seem to lack a fundamental understanding of how software development works. Yes, each build of software builds upon the prior.

Oh trust me I do. I guess I wouldn't be "screwed" as much as I would be extremely annoyed and inconvenienced.

You clearly were not around when Jagwar had the mother of all bugs. Your home folder just vanished. Forever. That led to way more wailing and gnashing of teeth than just losing your iWork documents.

Indeed. And there was also the Panther Firewire bug; people have short memories.

This is by far the worst ****up of all of Apple's recent ****ups. Simply inexcusable to have data loss.

I have to sell my iPhone 5. I don't know how I'm going to be able to do that now if I can't wipe it. Ugh.

I believe that you can erase it, the "Erase all Content and Settings" tool is not reported to affect your iCloud Drive. It only seems to be "Reset All Settings" which is messing things up for people.

I've noticed that a lot of people on here are talking about continuing to use OneDrive over iCloud Drive, while hardly anyone is talking about using Google Drive.

Why do so many people prefer OneDrive to Google Drive?

I have to ask, why did him running Yosemite Beta prevent him doing TM backups???

I smell BS somewhere. I'm not talking about the issue on iOS (that's serious and needs sorting), but beta software or not, backup, backup, backup!

You must not be running 8.0.2. The screenshot I linked, I just captured it off my iPhone 6 Plus running 8.0.2. That is what pops up when you hit "Sign Out" in iCloud Settings. And just tested it on my iPad Air as well (also running 8.0.2), the popup also now says "Sign Out".

That's weird. Nope, 8.0.2(12A405). It's an iPad Air. ...oh no...not another "gate". Shhh. We'll just keep this between you and me, OK? :)

A little later: I don't have the drive feature on (no way, ever). I just use iCloud for Contacts and bookmarks, etc. Maybe that's the difference.

True. The point is not to have only one copy of your data in one location. And iCloud doesn't count because *deletion* is synced, so if the data is deleted in the cloud, it will vanish on all devices that sync with it.

iCloud should automatically be backed up by Time Machine along with everything else, so you can go back in time to before a deletion event and recover your stuff.

I recently got my iPad Air replaced on friday with 8.02 installed. I erased all settings and content and when I restored everything to my new iPad Air I thought my iCloud doc data was gone but it just took a few minutes for it all to come back. Not sure how long people are waiting but I did not have this problem.

For anyone saying this wouldn't have happened under Steve's authority, let me remind you of Snow Leopard and guest users.

Just a minute...

Why bring Microsoft into this? Their O365 platform is growing like crazy, serves operating systems and devices from anywhere, and doesn't arbitrarily delete data.
It's the difference between a hobby and ready-for-enterprise.

I expect this from Microsoft, not Apple.

Someone should be fired over this one, this is major.

If I owned Apple shares, I think I would be selling quite a few around now, just like Tim and the rest of the board did before all these stuff ups.

Why do so many people prefer OneDrive to Google Drive?

Most users critically important docs are probably produced in Office. Excel, Word, etc. Microsoft only offers to save in Onedrive. That's all I can think of.

Okay, this is huge. How do you not test something like this? My $.02: iCloud Drive should not have been released yet. It should have been an update to iOS once Yosemite became available.

I don't want Google looking through my stuff and using it to advertise to me.

Bendgate deniers will probably claim this doesn't happen either.

You are the one in denial and it starts getting old. As I mentioned in another thread could we just finally give this a rest, there is no bendgate, just some idiots trying to stir the pot like they do every year.
People like you take your evidence from Twitter and YouTube rather than any credible source, it's just laughable. Do you also like the recent videos of kids bending the iPhone's in the Apple Store, such scientific testing.
This just one of the latest articles debunking this bs.

Cloud Is Cool, But Not Canonical Source

Image

…iCloud Drive will be fully functional in October, after OS X Yosemite is released.

Users who have iCloud Drive enabled may want to refrain from using the "Reset All Settings" option on their devices for the time being, in order to avoid accidentally erasing important documents stored in iCloud Drive.

Don't use any cloud service as your primary storage of things you value. While the cloud is cool—and allows you to share documents across multiple devices—it can be cracked and the technology is still in development. I can imagine no time when the cloud will serve as a primary source. It is for convenience and backup. We all really need to backup locally in addition to backing up in the cloud. Local storage is cheap insurance.
