Home is slow, cumbersome and was a ridiculously tailored solution to a simple problem of the ps3 not having a unified online experience.

Having to load chunks of data and spend 10 minutes getting from Room A, to lobby B - update your software and install new parts in the process - just so you can launch a game ? HOW is that anyway in shape or form better than just putting your disc in the machine and launching it?

I think you are interpreting what I said wrong. I didn't mean home was an end all solution to everything, it's just another spice in the curry. It's unique and isn't offered on any other system and I for one like the idea of being able to meet people to play games with outside the game (where normally communication isn't great because of the action). What I think holding it back is the lack of full game launching and since that is on it's way I'm relatively excited.

One game ? That's how it's edging it out ? Yep alright then.......

Maybe I'm wrong.. but what 360 exclusive FPS are there? I can't think of any other pure exclusive FPS then the Halo games.. so basically you have to look at the exclusives and with R2, Killzone 2, and MAG I think the PS3 has the edge.

Oh yeah because previews never lie My god how many previews have we seen of supposedly AAA titles, only to find out when the game arrives it is 'Average' at best....... MAG could be great.... It could also be next years biggest disappointment.

I know because this is a random amateur developer on a limp and prayer, right? No, it's Zipper and it's not just previews it's people I know in the beta that swear by it.

Typically games this year that fail high expectations are ones that aren't shown and hide and typically these are warned before hand anyway (See Haze).

It's amazing how aggressive this guy is getting over a video game console  as if he is personally insulted by me mentioning MAG will probably be good based on dozens of impressions, previews, and beta impressions.

Oh btw, just because you own 3 consoles doesn't give you a license to claim you aren't bias, like so many think.

Does PS3 have voice chat?

In some games only, but not universally unfortunately....

It has led to a situation where you will find that even on those that do support it - very few people are actually doing so.

Sony tried to improve the situation with cross-chanel text support - but who has time to type whilst in the middle of a raging online battle ?

Hopefully one day they will enable it.... Just like they eventually enabled XMB access during gameplay.

Personally I think homes biggest problem is it's size. Sony should have either had one download file which contained all the rooms/zones from the start, and they should have it pre-installed on consoles sold subsequent to it's release...

It would speed up the entire process. I mean the first time even customising your character is really slow, and it shouldn't be.

As it stands it's just too cumbersome for most people to use. It was a great idea but the way it has been implemented which is flawed. For an application to succeed it is about the ease of use and functionality, not just how it looks.

Maybe I'm wrong.. but what 360 exclusive FPS are there?

Well Gears of War, Gears of War 2 for example. Battlefield 2. There are a number of other exclusives (but they mostly suck ;) )

Personally I prefer adventure and puzzle games rather than FPS's anyway. Give me Viva Pinata rather than Gear's anyday :)

However Haze was hyped in all the previews, and was shown - but apparently it's poorness was overlooked by the majority of the previewers. But there plenty of others that have done the same, Heavenly Sword, Lair etc... I'm afraid the old curse of publishers bribing magazines with free studio tours (around the world) and financially incentive advertising deals is still alive and well, that I become very skeptical of all previews. Even respected magazines are guilty.

It's good to hear from players, rather than the press.

HOWEVER I am sorry if I seemed aggressive, and I apologize if you think so. Just it there has been so much silly FUD in this thread beforehand (& subsequently) that I may have had my AUTO-FUD Attack device set to kill rather than stun. :D

and hey if I am bias then I'll choose the DS as I play my DS-Lite more than any other console at the moment ;) (well until my PSPGo arrives next month)

I tend to agree, they need to overall speed it up and keep it slimmer. It still feels like a beta to this day (and for all intensive purposes it is practically still is), and the lack of a trophy room sucks.

Also more games need to utilize unlocking things like SF4 does.. unlocking outfits and items for trophies. I'm puzzled as to why Sony hasn't added this to their own game.

Home certainly has not reached it's true potential, things like lack of music sharing and video sharing take away a good bit of the hype but I think the intended potential can still be reached, it's just a bit far away.. this full game launching is the next big step.

Well Gears of War, Gears of War 2 for example. Battlefield 2. There are a number of other exclusives (but they mostly suck )

Gears is a 3rd person shooter, in which case I could bring in games like Uncharted 1 & 2 (oct) for the PS3. I did forget BF2 and also forgot the Perfect Dark Sequel but I don't think they honestly hold up to Killzone, Resistance, and (potentially) MAG. It's hard to believe but the FPS console right now is the PS3, and the RPG console is probably the 360, who would have guessed that at the start of this generation.

I want to say I prefer other genres but I'm normally in cycles and bugs and the FPS bug has me now.

However Haze was hyped in all the previews, and was shown - but apparently it's poorness was overlooked by the majority of the previewers. I tend to agree about not trusting gaming journalism, it's hard to respect any major website since they've all had controversy in the recent time. But if memory serves me right Haze was all smoke and mirros, flashy trailers fed the hype of fanboys and they rarely gave many preview attempts (and ones I read were merky on it).

But seeing actual gameplay is believing and MAG is both huge on scale and incredibly detailed on little things. It will be a lot of fun being in different squads all with different jobs. I'm only really concerned about how well the game will run when it's fully out, since just about every game tends to have issues to start out with online, and since it's an online only game it's reviews will suffer if it's not pretty damn polished at release.

I don't own 3 consoles... I own a lot more (3 PS3's for a start)....

Are you a russian mobster?
I don't know if you are bias, since I don't know you at all, but I know many who own all 3 home consoles and are just as bias if not more bias then the guy who refuses to acknowledge the other systems. One of my better friends is like this, he'll DL demos of the top PS3 games like Killzone and play them for 5 seconds before saying "oh I hate it, it sucks" so it validates his own thoughts and fanboyism. He goes as far as saying DVD is better then Blu ray because he likes the flaws in the picture (his words).. so I might have jumped to conclusions by assuming you were the same way though..

The first person shoot fight going on up there is interesting, I'd agree the PS3 has caught up, but I'll take the FPS on the 360(Halo 3, Left 4 Dead). I'm not saying they are universally better, I just like them more.

LOL.. I knew someone would find out :(

I try not to be - though it's often perceived by others that I am when they read one or two posts as I will often take the opposing side in an largely one sided argument - especially when there's a lot of misinformation involved. By doing so I'm trying to pull it back to centre.

At any given point you could read my some of my posts/threads on 360, PS3, Wii etc... and say that I am bias. But like I say this is because I try to add balance to a side which is in danger of being a one sided affair.

I also always try and bring some balance when PC/console threads kick off too.

I admit that I may fail at times accomplishing this, but its not with any particular malice or bias that I do so. Often it's because I can grow impatient when you have made a point a million times and it still lands on deaf ears.

As it stands, the the truth is I enjoy all my consoles, and all of them p*ss me off with equal measure at times. I will continue to have all the systems as I just enjoy having access to a game regardless of which platform it is on, and whilst I can financially afford to do so - I will.

Oh and tell your friend that Blu-Ray is better as the higher definition picture enables you to see more flaws ;) :)

I would guess that they are first made for the 360 and then ported to the PS3? Or am I completely wrong?

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.

Ghostbusters is the most recent big name AAA title which was lead developed on PS3 and yet it runs at lower resolution, has poorer textures and particle effects and more frame-rate issues than the 360 title.

People (developers) are still blaming the PS3 for being hard to program, however I think 3 years into it's lifespan that argument should be pretty mute by now. They have had the dev kits for longer than the PS3 has been at retail remember.

Thankfully it's not always the case. But it's looking like the PS3 won't suddenly be leaping ahead of the 360 in leaps and bounds as everyone expected. Sony's poorly designed RAM allocation choice seems to be the real limiter in the PS3's capabilities and will hold it back from achieving / reaching the full promise of the Cell CPU.

That being said games like MGS4, Uncharted 2 etc... can show that the PS3 can still produce some truly breathtaking games that are more than capable of shining.

MRU isn't biased for the most part. He hates and whinges about all things equally. The forum drama queen if you will :p:D;)

*runs for cover*

Hardly a fair comparison.

You should compare like for like, for example the PS3 doesn't come with anything other than a composite cable.

Really for a fair comparison you should compare an Elite 360 to Slim PS3

€249 $299 Elite 360

120GB HDD
HD Component Cable / Composite included (no HDMI cable)
Wireless Controller
HDMI capability
Xbox Live : Silver Membership free

€299 $299 Slim PS3

120GB HDD
Composite cable. No HiDef cables included of any kind.
Wireless controller
PSN free
Blu-Ray
Wifi

Basically at the moment hardware wise it is the WiFi & BluRay are the real difference here. Whilst you can at least off-set the WiFi cost in europe because of the €50 price difference between the two machines, this is not the case in the US. The Elite really should have been lowered to $249 in the US too.

Even then the PS3 is better value hardware wise - assuming you are interested in Blu-Ray for movies.

But again they are both primarily games consoles, and so people should buy on what 'exclusive' games they are interested in, and not necessarily hardware. After all what good is Blu-Ray if all you want to play is Halo or Gears of War ? What good is Xbox Live if all you want to do is play Little Big Planet ? Let the games be the deciding factor. Not technical specifications.

Um, to be fair, you're clearly setting that comparison up to spend more money then needed on a Xbox 360. If you wanted 120GB HD, wireless controller and HD cables, you'd buy an Elite. That really only puts the Wi-Fi add on(also the XBL, which is 7.99 per month, but you'll be better off buying a year at a time, where its like 50 per year I believe). Also does the Slim come with an HDMI cable? I read it did not..and the bluetooth thing, while you may have, isn't included, so to say its a good deal in general because you own a Bluetooth headset, is again misleading. Yes, the PS3 is a very good deal for the money, but the comparison you're setting up is clearly unfair.

Why not preset the facts fairly on both sides? You still bought a great console, but this way you don't come off looking like you're trying to mislead people.

Edit- Oh beat by MRU, but yea, his point about the games are key is oh so true!

Really for a fair comparison you should compare an Elite 360 to Slim PS3.

Even based on your comparison, it's still not enough. The PS3 is giving you BluRay + WiFi + Bluetooth + Free online play. Even when compared to the Elite it's a far better deal. But most people don't get the Elite because it's $299 US. So if they go for the Pro (or hell, the Arcade), they're actually spending more for all the additions they have to tack on later.

The answer is simple: the Xbox is just another Microsoft product designed like crap. They have the user purchase additions later on, which is what ends up costing you more in the end.

So if one is wanting to "save money", say they get the Arcade because it's cheap. The Arcade doesn't even have the option of high-def audio/video without spending $40 on a cable for the video, and then another $10 for an optical audio.

Again, misleading. HDMI cable...around 2 dollars one monoprice. Works on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Also, you know some people don't want all the high tech stuff...they play a little Halo 3(or Madden, etc) once in a while, and they only want an Arcade. They don't want all the extras. I highly agree the Elite should have Wi-Fi built it, but for the Arcade not tom it "fits" with Microsoft's line up.

So if they go for the Pro (or hell, the Arcade)

The pro won't exist once supplies have gone. The arcade does exactly what is says on the tin. It provides the cheapest solution to gaming in HD this generation. The majority of people who buy an arcade do not end up buying all those extra peripherals, nor do they have any desire or interest in doing so.

You are assuming that everyone who buys an arcade will want all those extras you listed. The reality is - as clearly is being demonstrated by Microsoft choosing to keep that SKU is that it is selling and those buying it are doing so despite the lack of those features which you deem essential (Wifi, Blu-Ray).

Again your argument is very black & white and you are failing to see that people come in all different varieties. For a lot of people the 360 Arcade provides everything they want in a games console. It allows them to play 360 games. Full stop.

Just because it clearly doesn't provide you with what you want does not make all those others wrong. So much for democracy ;)

Yes -- that will work find if you have one of the high end 360s. If you have a low end model (i.e. Arcade), you can't even have high def. without buying a cable ($40) to do so. This capability is built-in to the PS3.

The Arcade has HDMI, and if memory serves me correctly was actually the first SKU to introduce HDMI to the 360. Would you care to spred anymore misinformation ?

How can people still defend a piece of hardware with 50%+ failure rate. Forget the extended warranty. You wouldn't buy any piece of hardware with such a failure rate however good the warranty. TV? No. Fridge? No. The total cost of ownership on such a shoddy console is just wayyyy too high.

PS3 = Mac. Good hardware and very reliable.
Xbox 360 = PC, breaks down all the time.

we bought a mac for a reason. I would have expected you guys to care about quality more. Instead you just go for the cheapest one even though the total cost of ownership is much higher.

As for the different SKUs. That's just typical M$. You can see it in all their products. Vista Pro. Vista Home. Vista ultimate. etc. How many versions do you need for gods sake. LIVE Silver Live GOLD!!! OMG just too much.

Xbox 360 = typical M$ trash which is only being kept alive by the cash from windows. Had it been any other maker, it would have been doomed.

Do you actually have anything else to say or is it just the same regurgitated misinformed bigoted post every time ?

Okay, admittedly I had to look at the back of my 360 to verify it had HDMI.

However, what I was getting at was that component video or digital audio requires use of a separate cable. This capability is built-in to the PS3.

How am I misinformed. It's a fact that the Xbox has a 50% failure rate. It's a fact that you have to pay for online gaming. It's a fact that M$ rips you off for hard drives and wifi.

Some of you are really hypocritical. You complain about M$ all the time but when it comes down to it you happily give them your money.

Okay, admittedly I had to look at the back of my 360 to verify it had HDMI.

However, what I was getting at was that component video or digital audio requires use of a separate cable. This capability is built-in to the PS3.

However, Component Video requires a propriety component cable on the PS3 too, official Sony models of these are over priced too at around $40.

The 360 component cables have optical out on them. You can actually buy a cheap thirdparty component cable for like $10 and use that in conjunction with the HDMI on the 360 have have both optical and HDMI too.

It's not a deal breaker in reality, for the same reason Sony have only just started to allow multi audio output on the PS3 with V.3 firmware some 3 years after it was first released.

Basically most people wanting optical who are using HDMI can route it from their TV / AMP etc directly and hence wont be using either optical on the PS3 or 360.

How am I misinformed.

So your not arguing that your posts aren't bigoted and the same thing over and over then. The world has quite enough bigots in it, that I can not be wasting more time responding to another one. Congrats you finally made my ignore list....

How am I misinformed. It's a fact that the Xbox has a 50% failure rate. .

I know you're not talking about that god awful game informer article, right? You know how many flaws were in that? First off, those with issues are far more likely to respond to the study(always an issue with self reporting), secondly this is a gamer magazine. Those who read it are far above the average for playing time. Thirdly, I've yet to see firm numbers on how many people were in the study, until we see that, the study is worthless.

It's a fact that M$ rips you off for hard drives and wifi.
.
Well I have the hard drive my console came with, and I don't feel ripped off at all...guess that isn't a fact!

Better online = Xbox 360
First Person Shooters = Xbox 360
For fighting games = PS3
(Not because the 360 has less fighting games, but the Xbox 360 D-pad is really bad).
