I guess.... I mean its the internet right? Every Tom, Dick, and Hank has an opinion. The more irritating the better I suppose. I'll just stick to thinking different.

I'm looking forward to Tom's project...

tom may i suggest a powermac G5 Q37 DP 2.0 GHz PowerPC 970 (G5)...reason being price vs value...here in vanc cdn can be had on craigs for around $300

I've discovered Toms videos through this thread and really don't care how old the guy is I've been entertained and informed by his videos and am looking forward to his seven day experiment.

Thanks for sharing.

Beat me to it dude ;)

Hopefully this will clear everthing up.

Unfortunately I guess not.
The "macrumors team" knew that the other video was made for "ordinary people" who just to want everything working out of the box, and the video was good for them.
Now, "we" macrumors "team" will be proud with the second video, just because if he buys a good ppc mac (a G5 for example) it will do everything the intel does I guess (if he chooses the right versions) but the "ordinary people" will again be confused on what should they buy...
He's a wise guy, I guess he didn't need to prove anything to anyone.

A comment I posted on his video which is an ideology that he totally leaves out and he actually agrees with me:

"The issue with your "challenge" is that only you will be taking part. Anything you prove will only speak for your ability as a user. Your computing habits, software selection and general skill level are things that speak for you and you alone.

I really hope you don't take yourself so seriously that you actually think that your computing ability will speak for everyone. You need some proper perspective and to remember that other people with legit experience can do more with hardware."

As a hardware professional for over 18 years now I can see in his logic and thinking that he has some ability yes but it's quite limited as everything he states and shares is not ever looking at all aspects. His results from this test he wants to do will prove nothing but what his limitations are on PowerPC. It certainly won't speak for me.

Windows on PPC

I did try Windows 98 in Q on my PowerBook G4 1.5GHz and it was very slow it was like i was on a 90MHz Intel Pentium. It just would have not done it for School:(. My PowerBook will be my only Laptop agen when i sell my MacBook:)

View attachment 327581 It had a hard life before i bought it:( But it works Great:D

I also find Q very slow. There is a program called Virtual PC 7 that I believe runs on OS 9 and OS X. It is much faster than Q.

See a demo on my channel :
http://www.youtube.com/user/adddictedtomacintosh

where I have it installed on my PowerMac Cube 450MHz.

You will see how well a video clip runs on Windows.

that same machine can be found in wpg for $500

Personally I think hes a bit young to understand our love of these old Macs. Thats just my two pennies.

meh i love ppc macs but, he has a point they get slow and are starting to get useless mine can barley even run 360p youtube videos all it does is its used for iphoto surfing the web and thats about it, they are getting useless, seems like most people here are in denial. just my cents

I hear that the low end of PowerMac G5's are as powerful as the MDD 1.42 DP. If this is true, he might be able to get a cheaper machine for this experiment (which by the way I can't wait to see).

A dual 1.42 ghz MDD is better than a single 1.8 ghz G5. A dual 1.8 ghz G5 is better out of the box but I bet my computer owns it. If you're gonna use a G5, better buy at least a dual 2.0 ghz, or else the MDD seems to be a better option imo.

I am curious about this, how much better of a processor is a G5 compared to a G4? Is it like the slight difference between the high end Pentium 3 and early Pentium 4s? Or is like the Different Between the Core Duo 2's and the Pentium D's? ( massive )

With the massive increase in system bus speed I would say the difference is pretty big. Zen.state will probably chime in with some good info.

I'm not 100% sure on my choice of machine, but I'm certain that I can't afford a higher end G5. I think my best bet is to do what a few people have suggested... Invest a relatively small amount of money into a G4 Dual 1.42Ghz, and use the rest of the money towards upgrades, hopefully bringing it up to speed with some of the G5's out of my price range.
There are also a few other reasons why I'd rather get a G4. I always wanted the top of the line G4, and this could be my chance to get one. I also like the G4 flexibility in terms of upgrades / mods. I may as well have some fun with it while I'm at it, even after I've conducted the challenge. Whatever machine I get, I don't plan on selling it as soon as I'm done with the 7 days (which by the way I'm thinking of extending).
I'm still deciding and nothing is finalised. That's why I'm not announcing anything through YouTube or Twitter.

In order to avoid the confusion between my recommendations for different types of users, I'll be making a conclusions video at the end of the experiment. It'll be split up into sections, each section giving my recommendations to a certain type of user.

This experiment is flawed, but I'm limited to what I can achieve with a small budget, limited knowledge and my general understanding of these situations. I don't pretend to be the God of all Macs like many "Mac people" on YouTube, but I do like to try and help my viewers. As I'm still getting PowerPC related questions, I want to give them a fair and honest answer based on some research (the experiment) that I've conducted myself, rather than basing my facts simply on things that I've read online. As I've mentioned in my videos, I haven't used a PowerPC machine for my main machine since 2010 (I sold my G5 over the new year period leading into 2011). Even if this experiment doesn't help many people, it'll at-least be interesting for me to see how much has changed since then, if much at all.

I hope I've addressed all of your queries. I agree with them all to a certain extent, but as I said, I'm limited in what I can do and I really don't want to rule the world with this experiment. It's mostly just fun with, hopefully, a bit of info / knowledge thrown in.

Thanks for your time :)

I don't want to create a new thread for something this small but since it's PowerPC related and buying... anyone know if the latest Spyder 4 products are supported on PPC? I've fell under this trap too many times when it says 10.5.8 compatible to find it's Intel only. Granted I'll still need it for my Intel machine but it would be handy if the one product is compatible with all.

Alright... get ready for a rambling, nonsensical post.™

Like an earlier poster said, I love how YouTube has become the de-facto test for whether or not a machine is outdated. I guess it could be considered fairly valid, considering the sheer number of people who use it, but honestly, how many people really do on a day to day basis? I know of many, many internet users including myself who rarely watch any kind of videos on the internet, if any. On the occasion I do want to watch something on there, it's only in the lowest quality possible (Why should anyone care what quality a YT video is? Pointless.) and I download it instead of streaming it. VLC will play any YT video with no issues on almost anything it runs on. (I've heard of MacTubes, have yet to check it out. Betting it's good as well.)

I just don't understand it. There's vast amounts of software out there for PPC Macs that work as well as the day they came out. Sure, new features are nice I suppose, but what exactly was wrong with the old versions?

It would be fascinating to me to have people who are used to the latest and greatest Mac/iPhone/Whatever to go back and use the products of 10 years ago. I'd be an adjustment for many of them I'm sure, but I think many of them would be surprised to find out how not terrible the experience is. For example, I have an original iBook G3 running OS 9 I like to surf the web on sometimes. It'll do eBay, my online banking, MacRumors, etc. Not lightning fast, but hardly unusable. YouTube? Hell no, but we made it fine without YT back inj the day didn't we?

I understand technology has to move on and progress, as much as I don't really for it doing that. But, the bigger issue I have is how fast everyone is to dump last years model and move on to the latest and greatest. Honestly, it's kind of disgusting how disposable our everyday things have become. "Oh, this new product has a much higher resolution screen and more memory! MUST HAVE." If that's really what you wanted from that product, you should have waited until it came out with that to buy it. If you were perfectly happy with what it did have when you bought it, you have no logical reason to get the new version.

I run an eMac as my main machine. Sure, new Macs have 4 or 5 times the speed, memory and hard drive space, much crisper and better displays then a clunky CRT, and run all of the newest software. Would it be nice to have a new Mac? Sure, it's fun to play with bells and whistles. But do I need it and be able to justify spending the money and dumping my current machine? Not a chance.

Like I started off with, this is a post that most likely has many issues, problems and illogical information in it. That's my head, for you. I just have such trouble understanding why people just throw away their old, still very capable machines, and spend hundreds of not thousands for a slightly better version every year or two? (three, four, take your pick.) Please don't tell me "because they can" or "if they can afford it, why not?" I'll seriously lose that much more faith in humanity.

Word. Even on computers fulling capable of streaming HD, I don't. Doing so does not enhance my viewing pleasure for short YT clips and it ties up so much bandwidth that it's often rude to anyone else with whom you're sharing your connection.

You seriously need to try MacTubes on your eMac, though. Set it to play with Quicktime rather than Flash. Download it now and install it and try it. Really, just do it now. :) Here is the link:

It's the way marketing and society has become. So many people out there are so easily influenced and led to believe you must have this. Like Facebook and Twitter. I keep getting told if you're not on Facebook or Twitter, you're dead.

Even a lot of people on here were terrible before the Intel switch. Even when this section started but thats humans for you. The internet in their view is free speech with no responsibility.
Look at Youtube, there's not a day I go on there I see a video with abuse, slagging, swearing, cursing everything you can possibly imagine. When the majority of illiterate people can't express themselves, it's then verbal abuse. And for the love of god, if I see someone once more say haters gonna hate, I think I'm going to need to get a Safari extension to filter it out.

You know the best part I love about this forum, the hypocrisy. Before the Intel switch this forum was all pro PPC, Intel slow and all that, Intel is a PC arguments, PowerPC is what makes the Mac experience etc, you name it.
Then when they bought Intel Mac's it was full force of PPC slagging. Praise today slag tomorrow. The same could be said with anything in life nowadays.

It's one thing owning something but don't make it your business to ridicule people so you can feel superior. Thats really how the internet is now.

I've posted some of your thoughts before as well. I run ilife 08 on my macs and adobe photo shop cs2. My machine feels very fast. It can handle many things at once and I never ever shut it down. I don't understand why youtube videos have become the defacto benchmark for the masses. Its crazy. It makes me laugh every time that question is asked about my machine. My dell studio xps machine has major issues. Heck I don't know if its my sorry hardware or if my os is just flaking out on me.

:End Rant:
