I have never understood why unboxing videos is worth watching. At all. And I still don't. But I watched the whole thing anyway because I feel strangely entertained by him. He's so happy and excited about stuff, that makes me happy and excited as well. We need happy and excited.

I wouldn't leave OSX for a $500 windows box..

I think that most users need something less than powerPC. Most users would be good with an iPad.

I do like OSX, great OS. But if I had to have ONE computer, at least for what I do. I would take a 500 dollar Windows Box, over a high end G5. Simply because for what I do, I need something that is compatible, and has enough Muscle to do so. That's just me tho. If I could get away with a high end G5 as my only computer, even tho I am primary a Windows/Linux guy. I just might. I love the coolness of my Mac. Now if a G5 was compatible with new software, I'd say G5.

And it depends on what " most users " are. Everyone has different needs, for example. A student needs something up to date, while a internet surfer who only goes on Facebook and youtube doesn't need the latest and greatest.

I know some people who could get along with an iPad. But I also know alot who would not be able to. And I think I know people who would be fine with PowerPC. But I also know alot of people who would not be able to use PowerPC, not because PowerPC Mac's are bad machines. I understand they are not, but those users I know who can't use powerpc, couldn't use it for Lack Of Speed/Compatibilty with new programs.

Everyone is different and everyone has different needs I'd say.

I can see why Tom picked up this machine (the price was unreal) but due to the noise these puppies make,it would not have been my choice for his testing his theory.

Even if he finds the powermac is still very useable in 2012,the annoying noise the MDD's make, would make using this computer on a daily basis a pain.

Now that being said,im going to enjoy watching this test machine going forward...and with all Tom's video's they just make me happy watching such a talented young man.

The MDD is a computer of choice for modding. Just google a little bit and you will find tons of people who fixed that noise problem. Tom will have to change almost everything if he wants to make a good modern computer out of it. So why not keep on tinkering and fix the fan noise too? :p

The iPad is specifically designed to be able to smoothly handle all of the requiments of modern internet browsing, including HD video playback. It is also being constantly updated. None of this is really true for the PPC machines.

That, more than any inherent hardware shortcomings, is why the PPC is near the end of its rope as a mainstream computing option. Still, the hobbyists will keep running them for decades. My 15" PB G4 is sadly all but dead (fragged backlight for the 3rd time, dead optical drive, wonky USB ports), but my G4 tower is still running strong, and I'm not planning on getting rid of it. Still, it's not going to be my primary machine anymore.

We actually had a ton in high school, it depends on the time and processor load. The G4's we had in the Lab got noisey. But Not like the G5's would get when you loaded them up, Jet engine sound lol.

The family compuer is a dual 1.25 MDD that makes a hell of a racket, I simply installed a cheapo PCI exhaust fan & it did it a world of good. I just think Apple tried to RAM too much stuff into a small form factor. Noise was one of the main reasons I picked up my G5 instead of an MDD truthfully.

Well after playing around with my old G5 from work that was given to me. I am going to turn it into a Hackintosh i5. PowerPC is dead, I can't even use this beautiful Mac as a media center for HD.

I look forward to the project. :D

that's unfortunate, I've had no problem doing so for the last 5 years. I wonder how they were able to create motion pictures on g5's, must have taken like whole years to render.

Don't do that man :p. Still some cool stuff you can do with your G5, depending on if its a good G5 or not.

Render farms. Hordes of G5s crunching data served up by XSans over fibre channel. Still reasonably efficient, all things considered.

What an unfortunate looking fellow.

What an unfortunate observation.

You realize you went with a slower computer in a single G5 don't you? You're capable of a hard drive upgrade so no reason you can't put less noisy fans in an MDD. Even a dual 867MDD will keep pace with a single 1.6GHz G5.

I was running the hardware test on my G5 once, left the room, when I came back I was wondering what the hell was going on in the room, the noise was so loud from behind the closed door, lol. Having said that, most of the time it's the quietest computer I've owned, certainly more so than my Digital Audio G4, eMac, MBPs... though when it wants to it can get LOUD :apple:

I do realize this. I got myself the 1.6 G5 not necessarily because I need it, and I wasn't even looking at the single G5's. I was mainly looking at the dual 1.8's. I've always wanted a G5, more as a collector's item than anything, no matter the specs of it.

It's currently got an 80gb HDD, 2gb's RAM and Tiger on it. I'm going to bump it up to 4gb RAM (MDD's can't do that ;)) & get myself a 160gb SATA drive (MDD's can't do that) to go in there too. Then I'll hopefully get a PCI Airport card & a USB PCI card and upgrade from the FX5200 that's in there at the mo. After all my plans are completed, it'll be a really nice machine.

I have everything you're after and more..let me if you'd like them and I'll send you the price.

LoL! I thought that was a great video especially the ending as well.

Was the Front Row remote for the iMac's only? I could really have done with it for my G5.

Excelent. That should outperform my MDD! Make sure the drive you buy is 7200rpm. The G4's are getting pretty long in the tooth now and really can't be used for serious work. I like the expandability of the G5. My iPad has more power than my MDD!

If you think a single 1.6 G5 could ever be faster than an MDD then you have obviously never used one. Please leave the comments and advice to people with actual experience.

I know you really really want to seem like you know what you're saying and you clearly try very hard at making false statements like this with no basis of actual experience to draw from but it misleads the people that want truth which is pretty much everyone.

Please stop Jeff...

The reason why his would be faster is if he gets a 7200rpm drive, and 4gb of ram. My MDD chokes with 2gb ram...

Stop what? Telling the truth? Stating actual facts rather than opinions with no basis?

No matter how much RAM he has it won't alter the single engine G5. Based on things you say you honestly don't get how hardware works. No offense to you at all but it's true.

Bottom line is that he wanted a G5 and got one. It's one of the more reliable of the G5 towers at least. More RAM or 7200 SATA drives or not though it won't be able to keep up with your MDD or even a dual 1 GHz.
