It’s a good summary of info, nothing too surprising out of it. At this point a lot of it can be decently guessed at.

Of course, there’s no way to prove whether the info posted was legitimately from an inside source or not. Not saying that the OP is lying, just that it’ll never be possible to verify, even after the event. Thanks for sharing the info though.

Few tidbits that stick out the most to me are mentioning that the iPad mini 4 will be dropped, and that the OLED iPhone will be called the Edition. While not hard to predict or guess at, those are the most unlikely things to see leak from the usual places (supply chain related leaks).

Of all things I’m becoming quite curious as to what will happen with the naming for iPhones. Will they go with 7s, 7s Plus and Edition/Pro? Or will they drop the numbers this year and go to iPhone, iPhone Plus and iPhone Pro? I do think that by 2018 the numbers will be gone and we could potentially see a line like the iPads and MacBooks have - iPhone (4.7”, 5.5”) and iPhone Pro (5.8” and 6.6”?).
Edition, Pro, and 8 will not happen. Apple is better at marketing than that.

And people really need to 'think differently' as Apple puts it, as opposed to just thinking Apple should follow the MacBook and iPad naming schemes... these devices are so so different. Their sales numbers are categorically different.

As for dropping numbers, that will come when upgrade cycles decline further. Give you an example why you need numbers on iPhone and not MacBook or iPad:

I own a 2010 MacBook Pro. It's just called MacBook Pro. If it was MacBook Pro 4 I couldn't care less. It's numbering would be completely meaningless because this is a device that has extremely long upgrade cycles. Similarly now with the iPads, what the vast majority of people do is buy an iPad to watch Netflix or the like and it's at home and they don't care about virtually any new features that will be added because it's not important, it's just there it's like a TV, it's just a display to watch things on. iPhones are completely different though, because they have frequent upgrade cycles and because people want others to know they have the latest iPhones.

Your post is worthless and adds nothing useful. The OP claimed to have an inside source, why would an inside source make a prediction? Either they are an insider and they have non-public knowledge or they are NOT an insider and they are just predicting / guessing. In this case, I can tell you with almost certainty that their "inside source" was Google search, which makes this entire thread about 10x less valuable than Macrumors own iPhone 8 rumor page. So what's the point?
Fair enough. I worded that horribly, so I accept my error.

Nonetheless, you still haven't bothered to mention the item, which as I said before, makes your post 100% meaningless and worthless.

Can someone please explain what the name “edition” means?

In my experience, the word “edition” always needs a qualifying word ahead of it - something that describes what kind of edition it is: “deluxe edition,” “sport edition,” “2017 edition,” etc.

Why would Apple call it “iPhone Edition”?

I understand what you are saying. So you would want a name scheme like "iPhone Tenth Anniversary Edition" or "iPhone Anniversary Edition" or "iPhone Tenth Edition" or "iPhone 10 Special Edition" correct?

To me, and I think most others on this forum when it comes to Apple the word "Edition" means it is Apples highest end product. So when I get the "iPhone Edition," I know I am getting the best iPhone Apple makes. Just like when you get the Apple Watch Edition, you know you are getting the best Apple Watch that Apple makes as far as the case material (ceramic, including the back) and the Sapphire crystal face which on some other version you only get the Ion-X Glass.

"iPhone Edition" sounds fine to me, however, I kind of like "iPhone Anniversary Edition" or "iPhone Edition Anniversary."

Anyway, just my two cents on the naming schemes, haha. Have a good one bro.

My opinion, but I like very clean and simple naming. I guess similar to how their Macs and iPads are now.

I really dislike numbering, as it’s caused people to always expect something different year after year. And as the iPhone matures, there’s really no reason to have drastic redesigns. I mean, look at iMac, Macbook, or even iPad. They go years with very clean designs and very subtle change in design. I feel like at one point they’re going to reach that with the iPhone. Heck, this past year so many people seemed to lose their minds over the 7 being the 3rd year with a similar design. I really didn’t think it was a big deal, but the numbering has them into this cycle of expected design change.

And getting into double digits will sound weird. IPhone 13, iPhone 14, etc. I don’t think iPhone ‘8’ will happen as the name.

Edition? I think this year as a one off they could use the name Edition, until the new OLED design moves across the iPhone line up in more sizes and price points.

Pro? I think Pro is a definite possibility. MacBook Pro, iMac Pro, Mac Pro, iPad Pro.. iPhone Pro doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

I also always wondered if they’d move away from the “i” moniker one day. Maybe Phone? I dunno. What are your thoughts? Any guess as to where they’d go with naming?

I think the Keynote will be on the 6th as if it is the 12th that is also when Mobile World Congres America is and can't see apple wanting there event to be the same time but who knows hopefully invites go out tomorrow.

Well, we’ll know in a few days for sure, as Sep 6 is just 9 days away, and if it is that day we’ll probably get an invite early this week.

Though I’m sure Apple would love to do it on the 12th during MWC America just to disrupt all the news coverage that day.

iPhone can never change. It's like burning billions of dollars. That's literally how important iPhone is as a brand. Just a brand.

As far as numbering, numbering can reset. This iPhone will have a new moniker. iPhone (insert new marketing term). Next year it gets iPhone (insert new marketing term) 2. Etc

This isn't a one off year. It's simply the next iPhone. There will be one other OLED iPhone. It comes next year and it will be the Plus version of whatever they call this iPhone. Guess what that means? Pro is a no-go.

iPhone Pro Plus
iPhone Plus Pro

Both the epitome of terrible marketing terminology in multiple facets.

Agreed regarding the iPhone name. Would be cool to see a break from it, but it’s too well known itself for that to likely ever change.

Also agree regarding this being the next iPhone, and then OLED slowly making its way throughout the whole iPhone line.

But I disagree with Pro being a no go, as well as numbering resetting.

You’re talking about thinking outside of the box, and Apple being better at marketing. But iPhone X (X being the new name) and then next year iPhone X 2? For all that talk you think the answer is just going back to numbers?

Regardless, whatever they do we’re actually just 10-16 days away. Kind of crazy how quickly September has reached us.

I think my guess for the naming this year is going to be iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone Pro.

I never said X, I think it will have new marketing that is not X. Akin to IPad Air

So here's what bugs me about the name "iPhone Edition", "edition" means a particular version of something. A "first edition", a "final edition", a "special edition", an "anniversary edition", etc. these things make sense. But just to call something the "edition" just doesn't really mean anything. Am I the only one who feels this way?

"Anniversary Edition", shortened and commonly called AE, makes more sense to me.

I know - didn’t mean X, was just using it as a placeholder To describe the naming you were explaining. iPhone “new name”, iPhone “new name” 2, etc.

We’ll see soon enough!

Oh I also think the new marketing name will go away after a few years, and then fall down to simply iPhone and iPhone Plus, it's just marketing to draw attention to the new features and design which this is the last year for

Sigh. Expensive year for me I guess. I’m wanting an lte Watch as well as an “edition” phone. If I listing for the lte Watch, which is likely, I guess I’ll go with sapphire lense too since I’ll likely keep it a few years.

Here’s hoping T-Mobile does a “free in trade” for at least the phone.

I would guess their promotion would have you pay $350 ish for the iPhone 8 after bill credits over 24 months. Not a bad thing, but god TMobile fails at properly adding bill credits. I had a nightmare trying to figure out why my credits weren't being applied monthly.

Do we think Apple will ever drop the starting price of the current generation iPhone?

They obviously don't need to... as Apple certainly sells enough of them at their current prices.

But nearly every Apple product has seen a price drop over the years. And yet the iPhone has started at $649 every year.

What would happen if the iPhone 7S started at $549 and the iPhone Edition started at $849?

That would certainly be exciting! :)

My Analogy isn't exactly an appropriate comparison to the iPhone, but look at the 2017 9.7 iPad Apple introduced back in March of this year, a $329 iPad starting price point, that does not include the Pro related features. Why? Because Apple wanted to give the consumer an option of having an iPad at an affordable price, for those who want an experience that may not necessarily need or want the Pro related capabilities. It Gives the consumers more of an option and different pricing tiers based off what they need and can afford.

They have absolutely no need to, so they won't. They're not a slightly quirky tech company any more, they're a premium brand like Mercedes.

Of course.

I was just thinking how the original Macbook Air started life at $1,800 but it eventually settled to $1,000.

But you're right... they don't need to do that with the iPhone. If they did... they would have done it already. :)

I was just thinking out loud.

Ah, this is like the good old times of 10 years ago. OP's post reads like an older Macrumors front page new entry, one of those that made the community go all giddy and help to spour the Apple fanboyism everywhere. Rumors were/are gold for those that follow Apple closely.

And now OP is suspended for nothing but posting in this thread? Now, why did THAT happen...

A lot of what the OP is regurgitated information from months of compiled rumors. Aside from the Apple Watch finite details, some of the pricing, models and features were well discussed in advanced prior to posting from his "Source", which the OP easily could have self generated some of the material or altered slightly to make it seem like it's more relevant than it really is, even though it does have some believability factor attached.

Suspended, or eliminated?.
Tims " double down on secrecy " was code for Apples 00 program.

I suspect 008 got to the OP and he will not be seen again.

They COULD do that but they probably won't.

Just have the 7S replace the 7, and have the normal one year price drop. But knowing greedy apple ;)

So what? Back in the days Macrumors also only posted compiled rumors.
