That's not insensitive, that's ignorant. You don't know what he has to deal with, you just assume everyone can handle things, because you don't have empathy. Walk a mile in his shoes, buddy.

Anyway, he has a valid excuse, every else who lines up on the other hand...

That's not an excuse to wait in line for a phone. There isn't a valid excuse for that.

There is one crucial FACT we are missing here, and that is whether this guy receives any tax dollars. Most of us are guessing he does, and we are probably right. If he does not, I don't give a flying f#@k what this guy does with his time. But if he receives any tax money for his disability, then this is just one more example of people abusing a system put in place to provide for the basic necessities of those who can not provide for themselves. If I wasn't taxed as egregiously as I am, I would be getting a new iPhone 4 myself, but because a good third of my income is taken from me for, among other things, douchebags like this guy, I have to pass.

If you pay as much in Taxes as you imply, you would have no trouble getting an iPhone 4, all you would do is skip a 3 martini lunches with your golfing buddies and buy the phone if money was that tight, which I doubt.

On the other hand, this is the USA and while people who are on assistance do have a responsibility to meet the obligations the people have set forth for the program they use, it is not up to you or anyone else here to police when and where someone spends their time.

Since you obviously have no personal or firsthand knowledge of this person, who or how etc, I find yours and many others comments very offensive.

I personally think spending a week in the heat of Dallas totally nuts, but that is his choice and as long as he is within the law, it is his choice.

The person/s who are really is in the wrong, include you and many others who personally attack him for making a choice for which you are not affected.

There is one thing to think its crazy and express that you would never spend a week in Texas sun, but the personal attacks and personal insults and accusations are way over the line.

They way I see it, this guy is being very efficient. His taxpayer funded (assuming he is getting "government entitlements") publicity stunt isn't costing anywhere near what BalloonBoy or SailngGirl's rescue's cost (Sailing Girl's was $300K -- and bourn by a foreign gov't, not to mention the risk of life to her rescuers).

Point here is we live in OprahWorld. Less than 1/2 of all adult Americans pay any income tax at all, yet still expect and demand government services and personal bailouts for the stupid things we do and want to do. People can call this camper a loser, but he is only a representative of the many.

Go over to the iPhone forum. How many people were "pissed," and "outraged" that they were not able to get an iPhone for launch day -- and even called up Apple for compensation. To me they may not be camping on a street corner but they are no better.

And once again it doesn't matter if he's drawing a check or not, he's also not paying into the system. Dude is NOT DISABLED and should be working.

he just got finished saying that he doesn't work because he's disabled. What's he talking about "vacation"?

Ummm "According to his posts he doesn't drink and hasnt had a vacation in 10 years, hardly a drain on society. That and if he is going to school then he would be out for the summer. Hes in his mid 20's!! That means he has been working since his mid teens."

Judgmental much? Whats your solution? If someone becomes disabled and is having trouble finding a job in a flooded job market he must sit in a corner and feel shame?

Obviously he has been working his entire adult life and is going to school. Its OK for him to take a week to do something he wants to do.

Agreed. As if being disabled is an excuse for something so silly. I can't believe we live in a world where camping out for a phone is supported.

no actually the problem would be if we lived in a world where camping out for a phone is NOT supported, that is what i wouldn't beleive. no matter how silly this may be, he has the freedom to do it if he so pleases. take that freedom away and then we are all in for a sad future.

What is wrong with you people??:(:(

Have you never taken a week to do something you wanted to do, is it crazy to spend a week alone in the woods with a tent while killing and gutting deer? Maybe his condition makes it dangerous to be alone in the woods, maybe not, doesnt matter.

This is not about the phone, if it was he would have gone the night before. If he was that obsessed then he would have known about macrumors before yesterday. By "Urban Camping" he is meeting people and having fun doing it.

I think I agree with pretty much everything dtboice just said :D

What's the point? If he already reserved a phone, isn't he pretty much guaranteed to get it whenever he shows up? Is he camping out because he was not able to reserve one, or is he just weird?

As if waiting for Beatles concert tickets on their first American tour is any different?

at least with Beatles tickets you can say they may never come back to America again or its a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them.

A phone is clearly different as its not like Apple isn't going to make anymore or it won't be available again for another 5 years. Worst case you have to wait a few months to get it, big deal.. Its not like it is the first cell phone to come out.

Walk a mile in his shoes, buddy.

It's difficult to walk a mile in his shoes when his shoes will be camped in the next week. Besides, I wouldn't even want to get close to the man. One week camping in the heat to get a bloody phone - very intelligent. This is so pathetic that it's beyond belief.

For him, it's clearly about the experience itself; I'm sure he's met (and will meet) lots of people interested in what he's doing, he'll eventually garner other linemates of similar interests with their own interesting stories to tell, he likes being a part of the launch event of a device that really is groundbreaking in a few ways, and it's something he's passionate about and interested in.

Pathetic

The guy has no job, not in school and yet thinks he needs the most expensive phone with one of the most expensive plans.

Whats he going to do with it? Play video games on it all day long while he's at home sitting on his butt?

my first reaction while reading the article was that how the heck is he going to shower???

He's not. Which means that after a week, he's going to smell like rotten ass.

Not that I think anyone with so little of a life that they can camp outside for a goddamn phone showers that often anyways.

what?? I don't follow your logic

he's not disabled. if you can't find a job keep looking. try to figure out some value you can provide to someone else. something people will pay for. voila, a job. Jobs aren't magic.

+1

I think we are expecting too much from this group here on MR.

If someone wanted to spend a week getting drunk, having sex and doing drugs they are celebrated.

Someone wants to spend a week sitting in front of an Apple Store they are insulted.

Disabled or not, this is simply ridiculous. He needs to stand in front of the line marked "This way to get a life".
