I loves me some down voting. And up voting too for that matter. ;) I hope both stick around.

I really view it as a snap shot of people saying "I agree with your statement or I disagree with your statement"

We still have plans on adjusting the voting system. I agree this is not what the final form should look like.

Probably first step will be to remove the downvote and see what settles out.

Before we did that I wanted to sit down and analyze the data that we have.

Now, our lead developer is unavailable for an extended period of time, and so we've just been working to put out major fires, and launch the TouchArcade app. (MacRumors app is next up major project)

Hope the developer recovers. Sad news. All the best to them, their family and coworkers.

On topic, I don't see how removing the downvote solves anything. What good is a like without a dislike? I'm for a total up/down vote count and a lack of anonyminty.

Ironically, I also think the "Down votes are for sissies" posters are in fact, sissies. C'mon people. If you can't handle a -1 now and again, well teh internets aren't for you.

I see. So because some of us are publicly voicing our opinions on something, without hiding behind a -1 button, we're sissies? Uh huh......

Speaking for myself, it's not that I "can't handle a -1". I'm not rocking myself back and forth while grasping my knees, and I'm not shaking my fist at the screen.

I just don't see the reason to have an anonymous trolling option here. New features should improve the quality of the community. The voting buttons, and especially the downvoting button, have decreased the quality of our little corner of the internet.

How about a system similar to Neowin, where you "like" someones message, and it shows who liked it. When it gets to too many likes, it just shows a number, and shows the names when you hover over the amount of likes.

I'm sure it's already been said, but I vote for the buttons to display up AND down votes separately, rather than just the sum of the two. This would give a better indication about the post.

It would be interesting to see this forum operate in a similar manner to stackexchange where you must earn reputation for each task (such as negative votes). That way if you are just a

m4c r0ck, l0ng l1v3 :apple:!!!!!111

type of person, there is a chance you'll never get the chance to vote down valid posts, that innocently suggest something other than an Apple product is a good product.

What if it wasn't anonymous? I like seeing the opinion of others - good and bad.

Your giving the down vote button and it's user far, far too much power. Each person only gets one vote. If multiple people disagree with your comment, so be it. Move on.

The only thing that's making this place lose its quality is people acting like we're all in HS and turning every thread into a popularity contest. Up vote or down vote is irrelevant if you believe in what you post. Nothing else matters.

As I said earlier, I would have no problem with them if they weren't anonymous.

Why did you bother responding? You should have just downvoted my post to save you the time.

This tired thread is still going on? Why? It should be pretty obvious by now that the vote buttons aren't going away. Just ignore them.

Don't you hate it when someone forces you to click on a thread and read it?

Also, see this post:

I don't know, that's never happened to me. Does it happen to you?

Oh, I'm sorry. I just assumed by your post that that's what happened to you. I mean, why else post in a thread just to complain that it's still being discussed?

You don't like the topic..... don't open the thread. IMO of course.

I don't know, that's never happened to me. Does it happen to you?

Clearly it happens to you because you clicked on this thread and commented. If it's tired and old then why bother posting?

I hope the developer, whomever he is, recovers. That is truly sad.

I never said I didn't like the topic, nor was I complaining. You would do well to take my advice, because clearly something's bothering you.

Are you really arguing that every time someone clicks on a thread they are "forced"? That's a ridiculous position even for you, jessica.

Oh really?

This tired thread is still going on? Why? It should be pretty obvious by now that the vote buttons aren't going away. Just ignore them.

Let me break it down for you:

The first part of your post, where you ask why "this tired thread is still going on" is the part where you're complaining that you don't like the topic and don't understand why it's still being discussed.

I know, it's hard.

This is what happens when you only read the OP. As stated here:

it's being discussed as to what to do about the voting system (FYI, my bolds). So, it's NOT pretty obvious by now that the vote buttons aren't going away. Perhaps, you should take your own advice and ignore this tired thread.

Also, everything Surely said.

Why did you bother responding? You should have just downvoted my post to save you the time.

I reserve my right to not only disagree with someone, but to point out the err of their ways. Shouldn't all voters be sissies in your opinion, and shouldn't you state such in your sig? If you drop down voting, then up voting should go as well.

Of course you do. I was being facetious. This is a discussion forum, not a polling station.

The reason I chose to only include downvoters in my sig is because I don't think the upvotes are the problem. The contentious issue here is the downvotes.

I've noticed a lot of "Down-voting is for sissies" signatures.
It's what makes the ecosystem go around though!

I simply don't understand why the moderators tolerate those insults in the signatures. Just because someone doesn't like the voting system is no excuse for them to be allowed to violate the flaming rules of this forum. Worse yet, it's completely hypocritical for these people to push to remove a more or less harmless voting system while insulting ALL people that disagree with themselves. Calling someone a sissy is the height of childish behavior and removes 100% of one's credibility, IMO.

Speaking for myself, it's not that I "can't handle a -1". I'm not rocking myself back and forth while grasping my knees, and I'm not shaking my fist at the screen.

Clearly, you ARE or you wouldn't be acting the way you do, which is downright childish and hypocritical.

I just don't see the reason to have an anonymous trolling option here.

So you support wholesale insulting of everyone that disagrees with your particular view of the world??? My god that's pathetic. Other people have the right to disagree with your views. This idea that negative voting is "trolling" is ABSURD. Saying you disagree with a comment is not even in the same UNIVERSE as 'trolling'. Your views are so beyond the fringe and the fact that you would INSULT EVERYONE that disagrees with your view PROVES just how far off the mark you really are.

New features should improve the quality of the community. The voting buttons, and especially the downvoting button, have decreased the quality of our little corner of the internet.

The whole point is that YOU don't decide for the entire world what is "right" or "wrong" or anything else. You are not the center of the Universe and your "sissy" comments clearly indicate that you believe you ARE the center of it or you'd see how wrong it is to call people names for simply disagreeing with your opinion. I have no doubt that most of you are using the downvoting system as well even though you claim you don't like it (based on the consistent downvotes on any post that disagrees with your own).

Here are the RULES you are breaking with insults in your signature:

2. Insults. Slurs and insults against groups of people based on negative-stereotyping and obvious generalizations fall into the category of trolling and will be treated as such.

3. Taunting. Mocking or taunting another forum member is not acceptable. Posts that ridicule another member or obviously exaggerate or misstate their views may be removed.

Wholesale-name calling is both an obvious generalization and ridiculing other members based purely on their valid actions on the user forums (i.e. the voting system is part of the forums).

No miles, I was saying that one could believe you felt "forced" into this thread because you clearly have some discontent for it and yet you felt the need to voice it when referring to the thread as "tired." Just turn your head ... it's ok. I know it is hard not to come into every thread and figure out the most unhelpful one-liner possible, but it is possible to just ignore a thread. But to some extent, I don't truly believe anyone can be forced into a thread let alone forced to respond. Free will is alive and well.

It's sad to see folks who should be friends bickering over this silly vote thing. I'd give the downvote up even though I like it just to bring this era of old time members jabbing at each other to an end. Glad to see Arn weigh in on this with his current outlook..

Likewise, if you think it's a problem report the post. Why do you feel forced to respond in a negative way if you think [my] posts are a problem? I know it's not hard to complain about people [like me] who provide succint points of views while the rest of you enjoy running up your post counts whining about pointless things, but it is possible just to ignore a post (or a member). See what I did there?

Nobody forces me to post anything, just like I imagine the rest of the forum isn't forced to. Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth. Every time you respond you become more a part of the problem than a part of the "solution." You too, -aggie-. ;-)

I also find your post amusing because 16 posts earlier (post #243), arn posted that he will be adjusting the voting system with the first step consisting of removing the -1 vote button.

Both myself and -aggie- quoted that post, yet you chose to ignore it all three times, both in your original post and in the follow ups after we quoted it.

Good morning everyone!:D
