I think the downvote button should be linked to an input box where you have to put in a reason. This would help downvoted Posts immensely since the poster would know why he/she is downvoted - let's face it most of the times you have no idea why. It shouldn't be a problem if you're a a downvoter and have a valid reason to downvote anyone.

Having zero up votes would produce the same result without having a down vote.

Whenever someone wants to give kudos or positive feedback, there should absolutely be efficient ways to do, be it with a "+1"-post or a vote-button. So if the intention behind the vote-buttons is to avoid all the clutter with the "+1"-posts, what's the use of a downvote-button? There never were any "-1"-posts in the first place, because people would rather say "I disagree" and then be expected to give reasons for it, wouldn't they? Or do the admins intend to stop this too?

Talk about dumbing down the forum, it can make one wonder what the entire forum is meant for in the first place. It's obviously not meant for constructive discussions.

edit: Oh, and to those who have downvoted my posting this far: Thank you. No sarcasm, I really mean to thank you! I take it as a compliment that dumb sissies like yourselves dislike what I write here.

I upvoted your post, only because it had a -1 rating when I read it and the power of making a difference was irresistable...:D

Oh, and watch who you're calling a dumb sissy, noob. That's what the downvote button is for. ;)

Thanks for the upvote and the good advice. Anyway, the members I'm calling dumb sissies in this context are anonymous, and they have already downvoted my posting once. :D

I just think people should be suspended / banned for saying incendiary things then asking for downvotes. Like,

"Pfft, now Apple will have to admit their iPhone is just a toy! Here come the downvotes! Choice is a good thing, too bad your use iPhone and don't understand, trollollollollol"

Then later,

HAHA, I got so many downvotes! SUCCESSFUL TROLL.

In a way, you are feeding them.

hmm.. i prefer like buttons only :(

There's a reason why facebook doesn't have dislike-buttons. Like shinobi-81 stated above, there are valid reasons to have like-buttons (reducing the number of "+1" posts). The dislike-buttons, however, are useless in my opinion, especially when votes are given totally anonymously (i.e. you can't even see which users have downvoted you).

Effective immediately, I discontinue contributing to this site because of this. I will still write here, but there's no way I'm paying 25$ a year for Arn to implement such useless functionality which is designed to anonymously harass and demotivate other users. I know users who have been systematically downvoted (even in the photo forum) by several different members for no apparent reason, and although I'm not sure if it's the forum hive-mind or if it's groups of users who just decide over PM to gang up on specific members, it's sh***y anyway.

I encourage all Contribs who oppose the vote-button system to do likewise.

^^ Downvoted, not anonymously. This will be my last contribution to this thread which should have died long ago imo anyways.. but truly there are some *especially in the phone subforums, that need to be discouraged from posting occasionally. Or at least it needs to be made known that their crybaby and instigational posts are not enjoyed by others. I think downvoting helps, similar to 'peer pressure' helps keep kids from acting like asses sometimes when a better example is set and simple disapproval is apparrent. I find them useful. 'nough said by me.. glta!

I don't read the phone subforums (after all, they're full of whiners and Android-trolls on a fanboy-hunt), so I have no idea what you're talking about. But I do suspect that those who write inflammatory posts on this website for attention, and regardless of which subforum, only will be encouraged to do it even more when they see a high number of downvotes. Which is why the downvote-buttons are still useless.

Basically, having a downvoting-function can be useful IMO, but not as long as the votes are made anonymously.

So you're downvoting the voting-system with your wallet, eh? A bit ironic, no?

This debate has raged on for so long now, I've looked at the way other sites operate voting systems...A majority seem to require the down-voter to justify his / her action. I have studiously ignored my up /down vote count...I stopped looking when, after spending an entire Sunday morning helping a new member recover her PC, then her iPhone was shocked (amused really) to see how many down votes I got.

Since that day I have taken no notice whatsoever of them. Would the justification system work? Maybe, but my own opinion for what it may be worth is to get rid of the entire voting system.

It could be replaced by an old fashioned "Thank you for helping", or "Sorry but I think you are wrong"

Isn't that how polite, adult individuals are supposed to behave?

I enjoy the voting up system where it's made public who voted you up.

I can understand the reason for downvoting as I've seen my fair share of hilariously bad and ill-placed posts, but a lot of the times it just seems to gets out of hand.

For example, I've seen members post a picture of their 'mac set up' and get perhaps around 7 thumbs up votes, and only 3 posts later when they gladly respond in a nice manner to someone who asks what specific chair or table they used in their setup, they get thumbs downed for no apparent reason.

At least I don't see the annoying '+1' posts, but sometimes seeing posts where people just plopped a thumbs down because they could without anybody knowing who did it is perhaps just as annoying.

We still have plans on adjusting the voting system. I agree this is not what the final form should look like.

Probably first step will be to remove the downvote and see what settles out.

Before we did that I wanted to sit down and analyze the data that we have.

Now, our lead developer is unavailable for an extended period of time, and so we've just been working to put out major fires, and launch the TouchArcade app. (MacRumors app is next up major project)

I think being able to see who downvotes and upvotes will make users more cautious of what they do

That is the logic for alot of newspaper comments online using facebook as the sole tool for comments as it ties you to what you say and leaves anonymity behind, which is what most brash people hide behind

I would also enjoy seeing a total up and down vote, vs merely a cumulative

Still serves as a way to irritate people, even if it's public, so I say get rid of the down-voting.
