Gruber recently noted Paul Ford's blog post The Web Is a Customer Service Medium. Ford addresses what he believes is the fundamental question of the web: Why wasn't I consulted? There are no solutions proposed, but the problem is stated in the most eloquent and thoughtful fashion I've ever seen. Ford's anecdotes are delightful, as is his reference to his own comments are closed domain. Did I mention Steve Martin's story about getting comment-bombed during a live presentation at the 92nd Street Y?

I'm somewhat surprised Ford's article hasn't already been mentioned in this thread.

If they're childish then ignore it

Simple as that

I like it because it's fun !

Weeeee!

They are really annoying. We've removed them from the home page. Now lot's remove them from the posts. I thought that they would be a good idea at first, but now I don't think that? Why?

1) It's childish. This is a forum of adults and teenagers, not Kindergarden, let's try to act our own ages.
2) Any "anti-Apple" opinion gets a million arrow downs. Here is an example of how this would happen.

Okay, I know it's not that extreme in most cases, but I've seen stuff similar to this since the vote buttons have been added. Here is a real example of this type of action.

3) People can rate there own posts. Cheating the system = :D... not really. (See if no one has voted on this thread besides me, that Up vote is from me.)
4) Maybe if arn doesn't want it completely removed we can be like Facebook, a like button, no dislike button.

I'll post anymore ideas as I think of them.

lol it's ok. Let's make a baby now.

Oh Lawd, I already got me hands full there... I can't handle any more make-up sex!

He's three weeks now.

It is slightly childish to rip someone a new one for having a difference of opinion. The down vote just alienates folks and will possibly drive away people that might otherwise be great contributors to this forum in the future. I would personally like to know how many down votes are given just in pure retaliation, therefore making the voting an inaccurate representation of how folks actually feel. Just the opinion of one man.

Is this your kid? Very cute. Congrats on the little one.

Who cares if your post is downvoted? If you're really that concerned about what other people think of your eRep, you should probably just not connect to the internet ever. Downvoting isn't the problem. Thin skin is the problem.

I agree. There are far more pressing problems in the world then ones online persona.

Well thanks for clearing that up for us. And here we all thought that the voting system on the MacRumors forums is the most important problem in all of the world.

From the looks of this thread, it appears it's not that far down the list of some of the users.

EDIT:

Five more posts and you'll have an entire page to yourself in this thread. Someone does like the sound of his own voice. ;)

Do you really think that? Really? I mean, when you remove your disdain for most of the people on this forum from the equation, do you still really think that?

People don't like how it has affected their experience here, so they're posting why they don't like it. Just because someone voices their opinion about something, it doesn't mean that it keeps them up at night or something. It doesn't mean that it's the most important issue (or even one of the most important issues) in their lives.

Yes, that's what it is. I'm posting just to post. It's not that I'm countering points that I don't agree with or anything. I was happy to let this thread lie until miles made his post that clearly consists of a new and unique viewpoint that hasn't been said before.

Besides, my pages go to 40 posts.

Your post makes no sense. I've already established I care about this issue. Nice try at trying to be funny.

Jeez, this site sucks from what it was from even a year ago.

Perhaps Maui, Alaerian and the others have saved you seat at the retirement home.

Perhaps you're reading a different thread than the one I am. Some users sound like they need a Xanax.

Post Script- I bold portions of replies so that there is no question as to what I'm replying to. You seem rather fascinated by that habit. Just thought you'd appreciate an explanation as you brought it up in PRSI last night too.

How clever. Or not. Yes, it's not.

Perhaps that's your problem. Perhaps you're projecting your anger into other people's posts. I don't see what you see. I see people concerned with the way the voting system has diminished the quality of their experience here. I don't see any signs of anyone needing medication. But that's a nice subtle way to insult people, isn't it?

You would think that for those who don't care or see this as no problem that they WOULD care that some of the users don't like this. Of course, that assumes that everyone wants this place to be pleasant (even the owner of this site). It certainly adds no value to the site to have downvoting.

To those who say downvoting actually decreases the negative posts. Get real. I haven't seen any decrease in negativity on here. If anything, it has got worse.

Precisely. Not only does it create more negativity, it spurs offshoot discussions/posts/threads just to talk about the fact of the existence of the down-vote button and the problems (or to some, the perceived lack of problems) it has created.

Just think, if the down-vote button never existed, but the up-vote did, we'd never be having this discussion.

Why couldn't the vote buttons work like Karma on Reddit?? If the votes are attached to you, then it would seem to add a layer of credibility to the person posting. I mean now, you could rack up posts and become a demi-god but if all you do is troll at least the votes/ karma would reflect that... just an idea. downvote me to hell if you please....

Some people just like to hear themselves speak.....

Here's a clue for those that can't see clearly in this thread:

You don't preach peace while attacking other countries. It never works

Thus in similar fashion, preaching against the downvoting system while both using it (i.e. someone on your team is using it regularly looking at the latest votings on the people speaking against your agenda) and/or putting insults in your signature does nothing to further your cause. It just screams hypocrisy and no one likes someone who doesn't practice what they preach. I certainly have no respect for them. I can respect other people's differing opinions so long as they show respect for mine. I don't respect hypocrisy and that's all I've seen in this thread for many moons now. The very people who whine about how uncivil this forum has become because of the voting system are acting uncivil and using the very voting system they claim to despise to downvote those that argue against their views.

Tell me again why I should care about anything you or your side have to say when you don't show respect to anyone that has a differing opinion from your own. If you want your ideas respected, you should start by respecting others. Otherwise, you're just making a mockery of the issue since civility is the basis of your argument yet I see no evidence of it in your own posts. And that fact alone makes a very good argument not to get rid of the voting system since that same hostility would start appearing in the threads themselves more often if the 'negative' button is removed since they'll start venting in words instead of a button. Your methodology proves it again and again here.

So... no thoughts?

I'd like to see the vote button used more productively.

For example, when coming across a thread like this one with 300-odd posts, it'd be nice to be able to select to 10 top-rated posts so you can get a quick gist of the thread (and hopefully weed out all the "+1" rubbish).

There is no team. You act as if we're organized or something. lolz

You have quite the imagination.

I also don't care what you think about anything, and I don't want your respect. Yay internets!
