I went to downvote a post and was confused. So, I closed and opened my browser several times...then, I went "ah" and started looking for a thread mentioning the downvote button being removed.

I, for one, like the downvote option. It was a good way to express my displeasure or disagreement with a post without having to type an explanation via a reply.

This was posted elsewhere on the forum, but it explains why this feature will be missed in a succinct manner.

While it was abused on pro Windows posts, I still think it was helpful to have the ability to down vote bad information.

Indeed, especially when another ignoramus upvoted the post believing that it was correct.

wouldn't it be a nicer place? negative words and actions are often hurtful to others. criticism is one thing, negativity is another.
Trying to pretend the human race is different to what it is isn't really productive, in my opinion. Trying to force people to behave in certain ways that goes against our nature only backfires eventually. The world isn't about unicorns and make believe. Removing negative voting buttons because it hurts some people's feelings seems odd to me. Everything is great?

I personally liked the down vote

I did too. I think removing it is a mistake.

If there are no down-vote buttons then just get rid of up-vote as well.

Agreed. This just sad. I guess we have gotten to the point where our self-esteem is just so fragile that we can't handle seeing downvotes next to our posts.

I will not be using the up votes any more.

I guess we'll have to see how the community reacts to having just an up-vote button.

I still think that this place is better off without any vote buttons at all, but this is a good start.

I've decided to remove the filter (see my sig) to see how it works out, but I'll probably add it back at some point. I was enjoying not seeing them at all.

Both the up and down vote buttons should be removed.
Why?

What's stopping abuse of this too and silly posts getting upvoted highly? Nothing really. I don't see these forums as a place to brag about posts through post up or down voting. This place is supposed to be where some good Mac related talk takes place and that's all.

And since down voting does nothing to remove the bad posts/articles. It's just abused to make the good posters here look bad. Also the upvoting does nothing to promote the good posts/articles here. It's just abused to counter act the negatives given to bad posts and uprank bad posts.

I think the solution is to remove this whole voting mess all together and just have people report the bad posts/articles. And then the staff here would deal with the bad posts/articles.

Not sure if I will visit the forums as much if I cant go around down voting all of Surely's posts. :p

This is a good move. Excellent decision arn.

For those that think the down vote was useful I say give it a couple of months and watch.

This will help slow down the negativity to a degree.

Kinda goes along with the old saying : If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.

Down voting perpetuates more down voting. What does up voting do ?

Think about it.

Arn, other than as a popularity contest, what is the purpose of vote buttons in the first place? Was this site just not good enough the past 10 years that we needed to vote on things and people we like and don't like?

Ignites my inner rage that I can no longer 'voice' my displeasure through a simple mouse click.

Agreed!

While I found it annoying as hell having posters post comments about whether or not they'd be downvoted, as well as ignorant posts getting upvoted into oblivion, I'd much rather have the option to up vote or down vote rather than up voting only.

There are times when folks need to realize what they say is just plain stupid without the need to add another post to a thread. Or at the very least have them realize that not everyone on the forum agrees with them.

A button to indicate the validity of information, like a "Trust?" button. Perhaps limited to known community members / moderators. Something to weigh value of information rather than alignment of opinion or favor.

Always wondered what a "Helpful" button along with a visual cue within a post and search filter option to "clean up" technical threads and streamline the flow of information.

Pipe, dreams, I know.

Voting buttons (in their last iteration) seemed to be used to embrace or ridicule personal bias, and while at times "therapeutic", accomplished little.

Not sure what to make of the "average" or "awesome" only button... Makes me think of Apollo Astronauts with their pee-collection condoms. Small, Medium and Large - the wrong size was used, until they were renamed Large, Gigantic and Enormous. ;)

So "0" is the new "-"?

So we still don't want people leaving positive feedback? Just up vote it.

Upvotes don't seem to leave the reader with a negative connotation like a downvote does. The downvotes appeared to cause far more strife and contention around here than an upvote does. The upvote shouldn't be construed a negative thing and thus should cause any strife.

Why need votes at all then? People will speak their mind about likes and dislikes vote buttons or not.

The whole idea of a vote button seems childish.
