Upvotes don't seem to leave the reader with a negative connotation like a downvote does.

So what? It is not like a downvote means we are questioning his sister's honor, or we are swearing at them. All it means is that someone disagrees with their post. If you read more into than that it is your own damn fault.

Why need votes at all then? People will speak their mind about likes and dislikes vote buttons or not.

I agree. I prefer no vote buttons at all and use the script in Surely's signature. But eliminating the downvote is a step in the right direction.

Well, if you want to leave negative feedback on a post, you'll have to engage the post and leave actual comments now.
Exactly! The problem with down-voting is that it wasn't used only to voice disagreement with the content of a post. I've seen many cases where posts were down-voted regardless of how appropriate or accurate the content was, simply because someone didn't like the poster or their posting style.

It is a cowardly and immature act to down-vote a post, regardless of its content, simply because you have a personal vendetta against the poster. If you disagree with a post, at least pretend to be mature and voice your disagreement by posting, rather than hiding behind an anonymous down-vote. If you don't like a poster, add them to your ignore list, so you don't have to suffer the agony of reading their posts.

What if the down and up votes had a link and one could see who was voting what? Bring some accountability to the voting

It sounds like a good idea, but I can foresee that being used in an even more treacherous way. Folks would know who downvoted them and then some people would take that and go to war with them and potentially start bickering with each other over a simple click of a mouse. Then it would cause more strife and more work for the mods to clean up an messes.

I agree that accountability would help, but I can see that leading to off-topic discussions about "why did you downvote me?" or "why did you downvote all of my posts?" and resulting arguments. My opinion is that if I have a legitimate reason why I disagree with a post, I shouldn't be ashamed to voice it. If I prefer to hide behind a downvote button, my disagreement is likely not legitimate.

Maybe in your case.

See, ordinarily I would have read that and thought '********' and just given you a '-1' and not have thought another second about it. Now I've got to type a handful of words that you will inevitably reply to asking me to explain. I don't feel like explaining and I'll just ignore your post.

If you have a disagreement with a post, why not voice it by posting? I've seen too many posts that directly and accurately answered a question with the only possible answer, yet were downvoted. There was nothing in the post content that merited downvoting, yet some coward did so. The problem with that is, while the poster may not care at all, the downvote can be interpreted by a newcomer as an indication that the answer or advice they received isn't trustworthy or accurate.

An even better thing would be if one could sort by votes.

You could have the threads with the most up votes listed at the top.

Why ?

if a topic has a lot of up votes it means a lot of people agree with it. This would help people looking for a good answer to their question.

Conversely if the thread is something like " I hate Apple " and it has a lot of up votes then we can see that people actually hate Apple or we can see trolls easier. Which actually inadvertently fixes that other problem of separate smartphone sub forums. If there's a lot of up votes on a thread titled Samsung makes a better smartphone all the I love Samsung members will flock to that thread.
They won't be able to down vote a perfectly good thread.

I guess some people just can't take seeing a negative score on their post... even though it probably deserves it.

Upvotes don't seem to leave the reader with a negative connotation like a downvote does. The downvotes appeared to cause far more strife and contention around here than an upvote does. The upvote shouldn't be construed a negative thing and thus should cause any strife.

By its definition an up vote is positive so I am not surprised that they don't leave a person with negative connotations.

It's like saying that a person is happier if they receive an ice cream instead of a beating. Unfortunately not everyone deserves an ice cream all the time.

I think the majority of people who liked the down voting system wouldn't have found this thread, and therefore wouldn't have voted.

I like having up and down votes because it clearly and quickly identifies when someone's facts are wrong. Yes, it can be abused at times, but overall I think that it serves a valid function.

No, there are a few 'special' people I'll voice my displeasure about regardless.
And therein lies the problem. If your displeasure is with a person, rather than a post, downvoting their posts regardless of content is a childish way of dealing with that. Adding them to your ignore list is a much better approach.

The same could be said about the majority of people who didn't like the down voting system.

If someone's facts are wrong, it's more helpful to readers if you post a challenge, explaining why their facts are wrong. A downvote only says someone didn't like the post, but doesn't indicate why, and doesn't state that the facts are wrong.

The system has been abused since day one. Just look at the Apple threads. People will up or down vote based strictly on favoritism not fact.

Well said.

It's also a very trollish way to behave. It could also be looked at as a form of bullying.
