Upvoting only is stupid, IMO. It makes everyone think that if even one person liked what they had to say that their comment is a good one (even if two thousand would have downvoted if they had the chance). I'd prefer no vote at all to one-sided voting.

Just thought I'd tell everyone that I still hate the vote buttons.

Me too so I up voted your post.

:D

But that works against the vapid, no consequence system of passive-aggression... one click at a time!

The key is to take your aggression out with the voting buttons to avoid a TO for calling some ******* out on their ****. :D

Just seeing a "count" doesn't give any indication of why they voted that way and could lead to quick, but quite possibly wrong assumptions. But I agree with the person that said it probably helps avoid more direct confrontations on here, which inevitably gets someone banned.

Besides, these forums are relatively civil. People are complaining about nothing, IMO. I've tried other forums on other topics where people gang up on others just for laughs; vote each others' reputation up constantly to make it look like everyone loves them and the moderators are part of the problem rather than the solution (i.e. you report harassment and private insult messages over a well thought out refutation of someone's BS claims and they either do nothing or actually tell you to stop arguing...in a discussion forum! Meanwhile, their "friend" gets away with calling you names, making threats and generally acting like a baby. And this is supposedly on one of the more civil forums on this subject.

Oh, and don't post more than a few sentences. That makes their brains work too hard to read it and so they just don't bother and yell at you for a "wall of text", even when you have lots of proper paragraph spacing. Ultimately, you just forget talking about said hobby and move on because you realize the people on there aren't worth talking to for the most part.

It makes me wonder about society as a whole after awhile. I think there's a reason mankind has had so many wars and so much criminal activity over the millenia. We are basically animals, one step above territorial chimps that don't want to discuss or even argue about something, but just rip another chimp's face off when they step into our territory. It's the "might makes right" mentality.

If you can't win an argument, insult or attack the person instead. The more mentally acute see this as a complete failure on the attacker's argument, but most people aren't that evolved and just laugh with the attacker, especially if they agreed with him in the first place, like some school yard bullies picking on a nerd type, who is probably 10x more intelligent than them but didn't spend his after-school hours lifting weights at the gym and so he gets his butt kicked anyway.

At some point, once again, you simply just ignore these people or move on. It's not worth trying to educate them or talk to them. They don't have enough brain cells to bother and will just get mad and try to bash you over the head again. I think in religion this is why there is a saying, "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces." The wise man that said it understood you can't educate dumb animals. They just get mad, so you kick the dust off your feat and move on or you get trampled on sooner or later.

I have to agree with the OP. I had talks with Arn about this a long time ago, with a different account. Arn stated, at least a year ago, that they were considering removing the system or in the least removing the negative votes and just allowing positive votes for those who do post civil and helpful discourse. Personally, negative voting serves no purpose other than to passive-aggressively infuriate some and in many cases people do it just to be juvenile which makes posts that are beneficial less so. In fact, I have seen more aggressive behavior from many in the threads since this system was enacted.

Be done with it already, it's just unwarranted. :)

If there was a finer point to your post it was lost in your rambling verbosity. Even paragraphs can't help turn blah blah blah into relevance.

The voting system test is still ongoing.

I have some tweaks to make before we can see how it's performing. As there is no major consequence for getting negative votes, I don't think that people seem to object too much.

We may try the Like-only system, but still working on it...

Okay, you haven't responded back in this thread, so maybe this is a good time to get your thoughts by responding to you.

Personally, I think you need to at least get rid of the down-vote option for single posts. I'm sorry to say, but it seems clear it's being abused on this site. IMO, it's just a way to secretly troll (i.e., antagonize), which runs counter to the rules of MacRumors.

However, even though the positive-vote option might be a "positive" thing, I'm not sure what purpose it really serves either, since it's not attached to a person's profile (like the Thanks options in some other websites).

Can we do something about this?

BTW, I love some of the changes you've made in the last year. For example, I noticed that if you accidentally post twice, the posts get automatically merged into one. Brilliant.

You proved my point quite well about throwing pearls. ;)

This reminds me of school levies. No matter how many times you vote NO, they keep putting the darn thing back up again and again and again and again and again and again until it passes anyway (usually because people get sick of voting special elections every few months to keep saying NO!) Frankly, I think such things should be forever based on the one vote. No more school levies. No more taxes. No more trying to reverse Roe Vs. Wade (the SUPREME Court has ruled; it's OVER folks). Incessant WHINING only makes people want to vote you down more. Consider my vote cast.

I seriously don't know if you're comparing my response or the actual down-voting. I guess I'm not as intellectual as you. I also read your previous post, which got the response from iBlue you didn't like. You mentioned how civil these forums are. Yeah, right. I noticed you frequent the news and a few others (only looked over two pages), but didn't see any iPhone forum posts, nor PRSI. It's easy to think they're civil, if you haven't visited some of those sub-forums.

You had one down vote when I read your post. I wanted to antagonise you a little bit for whining about the vote system, but I really laughed out loud when you mentioned the iPhone forums.. talk about lack of civility at times! Were it not for this voting system, I'd have given someone over there a black eye by now... So, even though it went against my instinct I voted up your post so that it would reflect as neutral. FYI;)

Try not to let the rating system bother you. I understand how it can be annoying but just think, whenever anybody down-votes your post it means they don't have a response worthy of posting or are just too big of a puss to write it ;) :)

I'm still here.

I haven't been quick to change things too much as I wasn't ready to commit to any big changes. And our programmer and I have been busy with some other projects too.

I'm fine with trying without the down vote button. I need to sit down and look at the data too.

The system doesn't particularly bother me since I don't pay it much mind. It just doesn't seem to provide any user benefit for most threads. The main use of it is to pull the "best" comments out for news story purposes but 99% of the threads aren't attached to a news story. Aside from only having up arrows maybe they could also only exist in threads in the news story subforums...

Where was I whining? Anyway, I wasn't commenting on my getting down votes, but on some of the threads I've seen lately where down voting seems to be antagonizing

Perhaps, if they are kept, they could be treated like other "Visible Post Elements" (signature, avatars, images) and be given an option to hide them.

I think the voting buttons are one of the reasons I choose to use macrumors over most other forums. You can register your satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and there aren't countless garbage posts addressing the same quote.
