have any 2 people on this forum spoken to different rogers reps and actually gotten the same answer?

Re: Rate plans... Don't forget deregulation is coming to the Canadian mobile phone market, which will bring in competing companies (who knows... O2? Verizon?) and, most importantly LOWER PRICES.

Rogers has a HUGE opportunity here to come in with the lower prices (that they'll be forced in to later anyway) and lock a HUGE number of people in for 3 years.

Let's hope they don't blow it. :D

you knwo what, i ve been hearing this for a couple of years now and im getting kind of sick of waiting now..., i hope you are right tho....

I would seriously like to see pics of these phones... When I worked for rogers a few years ago... EVERY phone we got in was branded... granted I left the biz, and haven't followed it much.... I would be very surprised to see them move away from this

I wish I could snap a pic for you, but my digital camera is kaput! (Hoping to get a new one for my birthday next month!) Anyway, just look a really close look and there is no Rogers logo on my Sony Ericsson phone. I'm also 100% sure my previous two phones with Rogers never had a Rogers logo on them either. Maybe it depends on the model. I've never had a really high-end cellphone; I usually get one that is free or nearly free with a contract. Maybe only the high-end ones have had branding on them.

However, if Apple allows Rogers to brand the iPhone, I will eat my hat. In fact, I will BUY a brand spanking new hat and eat it! :D

Interesting announcement from a Rogers exec this morning (copied from the Globe and Mail...) At least they are acknowledging the concern about the price plans...

Globe and Mail Update
June 16, 2008 at 12:31 PM EDT
TORONTO — The head of Canada's largest cellphone company says Apple Inc.'s iPhone will be a cornerstone of the new high-speed wireless world and as such will unveil a new price model for data services to drive adoption.

Nadir Mohamed, president and chief operating officer of Rogers Communications Inc.'s communications group, lists the iPhone, along with wireless cards for laptops, Research In Motion's forthcoming 3G BlackBerrys and “staggering” software programs under development, as the key drivers of broadband wireless over the next five years.

Although the iPhone has been extremely popular in the United States, analysts say the success of Apple's smart phone in Canada will depend on whether Rogers introduces flat-rate monthly data plans for consumers.

“A lot of people have been concerned about pricing,” Mr. Mohamed said in a presentation to the Canadian Telecom Summit on Monday.

While the carrier is keeping quiet about specific pricing packages, Mr. Mohamed said Rogers will change its prices to be more flexible.

“You will see more value in our pricing as we go forward,” he said.

Asked what concessions Rogers might have made to Apple during negotiations to bring the device to Canada, Mr. Mohamed declined to discuss details, but he noted that more than 20 countries will have the iPhone on their networks this summer.

“As Canadians, we should feel good that we are in that camp. That we have the iPhone up and running,” he said.

Rogers is scheduled to launch the iPhone on its network on July 11th"

This is my interpretation of Rogers' increased value.

So they will charge $65 for unlimited instead of for 1GB. But since no one actually would use more than 1gb, there is no actual advantage for the consumer.

Why am I skeptical that the base plan will not be close to the $30 it is on AT&T

You are painfully optimistic about Rogers. I understand, I'm in the same boat. However, lets be realistic about Rogers. If they offer an unlimited plan, which is a real unlimited plan, not like their deceptive "unlimited plans" they offered for Blackberry which was capped at 25MB (In the US, if a telco had done that, there would have been a massive class action suit)

I suspect that their unlimited will be over $100. You see, the people who create the pricing work off spreadsheets in some cubicle and never actually talk to a customer. Also, a company like Rogers, with the only GSM network in Canada will not change their business model to Rogers 2.0 where instead of charging you for usage, they would charge by application.

Apple made the change from a revenue share with the telcos to no revenue share, but they expect to offset that with volume and the App Store.

I had a Treo with Rogers and basically I could not use the device for anything other than a phone. I make an above average living and could not afford their data rates.

I now have an unlocked iPhone with no Rogers data plan. I will only consider the 3G if Rogers shocks me and delivers a plan somewhere in a range similar to AT&T at $30/unlimited. Not going to happen.

One more note. The telcos work a bit like the airlines in that no one person has the same price for their flight as the next person.

You could take every single person on this site who uses Rogers and find that everyone has a different plan. I'm not talking about the numbre of minutes etc, I'm talking about prices for individual services as well as for bundles. They do this for a reason, so people cannot compare their plans.

Also, I am currently in a 3 year contract, so I don't know if Rogers will make me pay more for the iPhone. A new customer coming in gets the subsidized price, we don't. Typical

I can guarantee you if it's a truly unlimited plan for 65$ I will go well over that 1GB every single month.. easily. If it's a truly unlimited plan than I think I can justify under 100$ with voice/text/etc included. If the unlimited only refers to things like web browsing then it's going to have to be significantly cheaper. Edit: For me at least.

From what I have read about US users, that would probably put you in the top 5 percentile for use. How would you use so much data just through email/safari?

That's where the truly part of the truly unlimited data comes in. It wouldn't be just browsing the web or sending e-mail. I'd use programs like Telekinesis to stream my music and movies to my phone. If I could do this without WiFi (ie everywhere else) then the limit of the iPhone's capacity is really irrelevant. On top of that, I would use Orb to stream my Sirius to wherever I am without having to worry about having my receiver with me. I have to assume that streaming Sirius daily for anywhere from an hour to four hours would eat up a lot data as well. Other programs like VNSea to remotely control my computer probably take a lot of data use as well. I end up doing a lot of driving as well and would use the GPS as much as possible.
I think when I said I would go over it every month that a lot of my reason for saying that was just that if Rogers finally gives us an unlimited data plan I will find a way to use as much as possible. I think that streaming my music/movies from my computer to my phone wherever I am would probably take up over 1gb if it was done daily. I don't know how possible this is over 3G but it is easily possible with WiFi. I have to assume that I wouldn't have a problem streaming mp3's over a 3G connection.
If it was just browsing the web and sending emails then I doubt I could come up with a lot of data use, as you said.

Here's another question: Will the phone be available at other stores that provide Rogers wireless, such as Wireless Wave and The Source?

No idea about The Source but Wireless Wave has said they should be getting them about a week after launch. Some people are saying Best Buy and Future Shop will have them on the 11th but I highly doubt it. I'm a rep for another company (not a wireless company) and I've been in Future Shop for the past two weeks. All of them are pretty much saying they will not have them any time soon, if at all. Although, given the fact Rogers has no clue what the hell is going on with the phone I wouldn't be surprised if all this changes.

See now my friend claims that the Rogers reps in Future Shops have been trained on the iPhone in order to sell it and also claims to have seen the pricing list for the iPhone... not that the price is any different, but just as proof that Future Shop would have them .. of course he could be lying.

I wouldn't say they're lying. Again, no one really seems to have a firm grasp on what is actually going on. From what I hear Rogers reps get their phones tomorrow (Tuesday) for training so maybe we'll know more by the end of the week.

I work at Future Shop. I confirm that as BS.

Wow, you guys are expecting the worse. You're suffering before time. Just relax and we'll soon find out what the price really is. I'm sure Apple set up an agreement with Rogers/Fido. And that's why it took a year: Rogers/Fido probably didn't agree at first, but then realized they were losing money. I still say we shall see a good plan by around 59$.

Just so you know, High speed internet (25Mb/s)+Free Telephone+100+tv channels in HD in France is only 29 Euros. Why the hell a cell plan would cost more than that? If they set up a high price then just don't accept it. Wait till they suggest a better plan. Don't be a blind follower/slave.

59$ for everything would be pretty nice. But then there's the tax, the hidden fees, etc. Itll end up being around 70-75, lol.

Way too optimistic. Rogers current plan for 350 minutes is $35. The top Blackberry plan is 350 min + 25 MB for $90. They are charging $55 for the data portion of the plan.

According the the press release today, they will be providing "more value" for the iphone.

The best case scenario will be $40 on top of your voice plan for an indeterminate amount of data, but probably not unlimited like on AT&T.

There is just no way that greedy Rogers will make it less than $40, and I would give 50/50 odds that it is more than $40.
