iPhone plus three years of 30$ plus voice plan (20$?) amounts to 1280$!

No thank you, I will just pick up a out of contract iPhone here in Europe before moving to Canada. Hell, I'll even get a out of contract iPhone if it will cost me more total, I just hate monthly expenses and the iPhone contract takes the cake.

$50 per month is what I pay for my phone now, and is pretty much the average price people pay for cell phones across Canada. I would be overjoyed if I could pay the same for an iPhone! Seriously, how cheap do you expect it to be? If you add ANYTHING up for over 3 years, it will sound expensive. Perhaps you should add up the difference between your current plan and the iPhone plan, because you'd be paying your current plan anyways. I'm fully expecting Rogers to charge around $100 per month WITHOUT unlimited data.

For what it's worth MacNN has also picked up this story quoting the same article as JonHimself posted here. At the end of the MacNN article I found this paragraph interesting...
The claimed rates are also consistent with statements made by Rogers president Nadir Mohamed at a recent technology conference, when he said the provider's rates would change to reflect heavy data use and that the iPhone would increase the average overall monthly fees by nearly $30 per user to $90. The average roughly equates to a mid-level iPhone 3G plan with AT&T.
... guess we'll only know for sure on July 11th.

I hardly ever use my phone so paying 50$ a month just to have the option is insane to me. Right now, in Denmark, I have one them sims where I buy calling minutes and then buy some more when they are used up. I pay maybe 20$ every two months or so.

If the only option open to me in Canada is to shell out 50$ or more every months then no thanks, I'll just do without the phone part of my iPhone.

Read into this what you will, but it seems that Rogers is dropping the price on plans for their high speed wireless internet stick from $50 to $30. If the rumors about $30/unlimited data are true (or at least vaguely close), it would make sense for them to move other plans of a similar nature to the same price point.

Im really hoping they give something reasonable. IMO where I live the target is 18-30 for the iPhone. People this age can't afford to pay 100$ /month lol on cell phones. Give us something reasonable and make it accessible like steve said it would be...

Not sure if anyone posted this, but Rogers just updated their Blackberry data plans, no doubt in anticipation of the Blackberry Bold launch.

This was spotted by Electronista:
http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/06/20/rogers.bberry.plan.update/

"...new extra tiers increase the bandwidth allotment to 1GB ($60), 3GB ($80), and 6GB ($100) with the same protection rates. "

The Rogers plans can be viewed here:
http://your.rogers.com/business/wir...ess_plans.asp?plan=blackberrydata&cat=2&typ=2

Looks like they are willing to make big strides towards better data plans. Not exactly unlimited, but who knows what the iPhone specific plans will be. They've also got a "Flex Rate" plan for $50-$100 ranging from 500MB to 5GB. Your monthly fee varies based on usage.

Looks like there's a more complete report below. This includes both Rogers and Fidos new data rates:

So i just talked to Rogers again today. Asked about getting the iphone as my hardware upgrade, and the woman told me that USUALLY new phones are for new customers only and that you have to wait for hardware upgrades on the newest phones.

I'm continually surprised by how much *new* information we can get from the reps at Rogers.

I would hope that with the iPhone they would be offering it to everyone at launch and not just new customers first. I am willing to pay full price for one at the launch and would expect that rogers will have a full price option.

OH NO!!!

My wife just told me that she wants an iPhone too. Now it's gonna cost me a couple hundred bucks per month!!!!

Do they have special rates for multiple iPhone in one family in the USA?

Cheers.

They had family plans in the US, not sure how much they actually cost though.

I generally agree wtih this statement. Whenever I have to renew my contract, it seems that new customers are given first priority. They don't spend much effort on keeping their existing customers.

Here's more fuel for the fire of the expected data rates...

yeah I am with you on that one, in the past i have canceled my contract over the phone in front of the rogers rep to get a new phone, it was just cheaper to cancel and be a new customer than upgrading.

How much sites would I be able to surf using 300MB of data per month? It doesn't look like much, but then again, maybe it's good enough.

i'm 18 and i can afford that easily, i can also afford the cancellation fee for my other contract, and all these fees. No matter what it won't be accesible to everybody, but most people can do it if they cut something out of their budget.

I'm not saying i want to pay tonnes of money, but my point is that people my age CAN afford it.

If you don't wanna pay too much money, just stick with an iPod touch and buy some cheap crappy pay as you go phone.

i'm with telus and they didn't try very hard to keep me when i renewed. I got the hardware discount because i was signing a new contract, but none of the nice deals like new customers get, like gift cards or whatever. And i still had to pay that &%$#ing hardware change fee

You are not the norm. Go ask 10 people on the street how much they pay for their phone. Most of them will not give you an answer over 100$/month.

And that's for "people". For teenagers, for example, the number would be much less. Most (thats right - most - not all!) have jobs that pay <15$/hour, and have other things to pay for, and therefore would be burdened by paying 100/month.

I am aware of the concept of opportunity cost - if you buy something, you're giving up the opportunity to buy the next best alternative. Sure, I could spend 100/month on a cell phone if I wanted to, but in my opinion there are much better alternative. If people in the US can get away with a 30/month data plan, why should we have to pay twice as much? If you're willing to accept the 100/month (while in the US they're paying way less) without complaining, then you are a sucker :p The phone companies love people like you who will pay anything that is asked of them even though other companies sell the identical product for much less money.

COME ON ROGERS!!

Let us know the pricing for the iPhone. Why is it such a secret?? By now, they must know how much they are going to charge!

Cheers.
