Hey i just had a quick question if i get an iPhone without a data plan (i have wifi at university and at home mostly where i'll be using the phone) Does the iphone need to be connected to the internet to send text messages? I'd assume it's like any other phone and i don't require an internet connection or am i wrong?

I'm pretty sure that text message are sent over the cell phone network so it should work.

So during my now completed quest for a 16GB black iPhone, I found that there's Rogers store near Elm and University Ave., but it's not listed on the website. They are getting a shipment in Monday so it might be a good spot to check.

<edit> The store front is on Elm, but I believe the address of the building is 525 University Ave. (blue building just south of Sick Kids Hosptial) it's a little out of the way from other 'down town locations' so you might have better luck there. </edit>

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned in previous posts. However, I was wondering if it's possible to purchase an iphone only with the data plan & value pack without the voice plan? I'm willing to fork out the $50 downgrade fee on the price of the model but I'm really reluctant to get the voice plan because i hardly ever use my cell to talk anymore.

Is that store totally out of stock of 16GB Black? I was thinking of trying to grab one tomorrow. I'd call but they close at 7 lol

So I guess I'll find out tomorrow. But if you know that they are out of stock and know of a location that might have one, please tell =)

sorry they are out of 16GB models but had 8GB's. They said to check Monday for the 16GB. Good hunting!

Does the GPS on the iphone only use data or can you use Satellite signals only? for example on my N95 i can use GPS aided by a data connection or without one

from what i undestand the gos itself does not use data, what uses teh data in the gps of the iphone is the maps, since it uses "streamed" maps from google, they are not saved in the device...

I just finished calling Rogers CS and I got myself a white 16GB iPhone for $324 without having to sign up for data. They put a data block on my account so that I don't use it and get stuck with a huge bill.

It should be here in 2-4 business days (I'm hoping Monday)...

 I don't believe you.. prove it! :p

Seriously though, this is good news for people who just don't need the data plan (for whatever reason). And the $324 sounds like a great price to boot!

Why would people not get a data plan. I understand if you usually have WI-FI where you are most of the time. But the whole point of the iPhone is to be able to use all those features where ever you are! If you want to do something that requires data on the iPhone and you don't have Wi-Fi, your screwed. Data is part of the experience! Being able to do all those things, anywhere you happen to be.

Some people just don't want the extra expense, but still want to have the best phone on the market. To me, the $30 for 6GB plan is worth every penny just for the GPS alone. It's very cool to be able to see where you are on a map, everywhere you go, especially for hiking and exploring.

I bought an 8gig and a white 16gig on July 13th via the phone with Rogers. They told me they had the 8gig in stock, but did not have a 16gig in stock. They also told me the 8gig would ship out that day and would be at my door in 3-5 days.

It's been 12 days. I have called them 4 or 5 times now. The latest response is that neither phone has shipped. They have no iPhones in stock, and that I'm on a priority list when they do get more.

If you get your phone next Monday I'd love to know (as well as what province you're in as perhaps that's a factor in this stock issue). I'm in Ontario. [Edit] I see you're in Toronto. I'm in Ottawa.. I can't see why we'd have a different pool of phones in stock

I don't really care when I get my phones. What I do care about is ensuring that I get the 6gig data plan for $30. Because at this point I would be surprised if I was well into August before my phones arrive.. and potentially the dreaded September. They say my rate plans are locked in. But I don't trust Rogers to hold true to that.

The data is really nice. Although right now I'm not using it that much, I know I will when I go back to university in august. Besides, if I decide I don't want the data I can just call up and remove that from my plan.

I bought an iPhone on Thursday.

It's the 8-gigabyte model. The guy at the Fido booth (booth # k-9 on the map) in Sherway Gardens mall was really helpful.

I knew I was going to be adding the $30/month 3G data package and $15/month 3G "value pack" containing visual voice mail and 2500 text messages to my plan.

The Fido rep sorted out that I could replace my existing $45/month voice-and-data plan (100 daytime minutes, 1000 night and weekend minutes, 50 text messages, and 50 megabytes of data on the old network each month) with a $35/month voice plan offering 150 daytime minutes, unlimited night and evening minutes, and unlimited incoming calls. He also sorted out that I could replace the value pack already on my plan with the $15 value pack that included VVM.

The rep must have taken 40 minutes explaining things and using the computer and calling in to Fido Central when something didn't quite work. Fortunately there wasn't a lineup or anything; maybe two other people asked about the iPhone, and there were two or three other customers there to pay bills and buy accessories.

Since I had already cancelled my cable TV subscription ($25/month) in anticipation of paying for the 3G data, this all works out to me paying about the same in communications charges every month as I ever have, while getting rid of something I hadn't used in six months (cable TV) in favour of something I really wanted.

Furthermore, while the iPhone was $199, I paid $125 out of "FidoDollars" which I had accumulated as I paid bills and used services over the past couple of years. The remaining $75 is going on my next bill. So I didn't even have to pay cash to get the iPhone! I was fully prepared to.

So now I've got this cool gadget. I'm loading it with French lessons and Esperanto rock and electronic music. I'm thinking of buying the French/English translation dictionary for it. I also want to figure out how to load other things on it. Time to explore... :)

Weird. Go on the rogers website. Looks like you can only get the my5 35$ a month plan at a MINIMUM with the 6GB data plan!!!! What a bunch of....!!!
No more 20$ plan!

For $35 i got the My5 250 plan which gives me 250 anytime minutes, unlimited evening and weekend, 250 text, plus unlimited calling and text anywhere in Canada to any five numbers that I choose (they can be changed once a month). Plus the $35 6 Gb data and the $15 value pack. Plus my 10% VIP discount.

6Gb data
2750 Text messages
250 daytime minutes
unlimited weekends and evenings
visual Voice mail
who called
5 numbers unlimited calling and text

$80-10%=$72

The five numbers cover 99% of my long distance so there is real no long distance charges either.

my dad and i popped down to our local rogers video store to get his iphone... no lineup (we were the only ones in the store o_O) but we ended up waiting for nearly an hour...
(cos Rogers has bad ITservices for its own stores or sth...the salesperson got kicked out of the comp system, and had to call rogers internal line or sth to get logged in again)

anyhow, we managed to get the phone at 175 (think dad had to pay 224 originally, but he got some kind of hardware discount or sth)...I got him a wave case (griffin) to go with it...and its awesome :)

dad does a lot of running around and has this weird need to check his email every so often, so the $30 plan works well with him, but to each person his/her own needs i guess (I don't need an iphone, but damn its fun to play with haha)

ok. end of bored rambling. o.o

I went with this plan: 200 minutes, u/l evenings/weekends after 7 PM, 2500 SMS, Visual voicemail, caller ID, who called, call forwarding, unlimited Fido to Fido. $67.20 + tax = $75.85
Good thing I went with Fido (per second billing) and not Rogers because it looks like the Rogers plans got raised today!

My iPhones shipped today.

Turns out the long delay I had was because they had my account flagged for possible fraud because I bought two at once. And even though that department called me the day after I ordered the phones they never actually cleared the flag. They called again yesterday, and today they both shipped.

Rogers = stupid. But oh well, at least my phones are on their way.

cracked screen

I have a 2G iphone and i have a small crack on the side of the glass on the front that breaks my heart everytime I look at it. Do you think I would have to take it across the border to get fixed or (hopefully) replaced?
