It does have it's own phone number. NumberSync for Apple Watch (Cellular) does the magic and it needs to be setup. The setup of NumberSync is part of the initial setup or "on watch" setup or can be done manually in Myatt.

Dave
I am aware it needs it’s own number. Just frustrating their automated systems are broken (in my case). Their site is not accepting my credentials to login, and, on the call, they are asking for a lot of information that is irrelevant to the process. Now just having been asked for my DL# to confirm Credit..

Then just now, after 35 minutes, I was transferred to someone else, without warning, and the individual did not hand off ANY of my information. I am now starting over, from scratch, reading off numbers from my box to get this device activated.

I have a Mobile Share Value plan. Ought it to work on that one???
[doublepost=1506106093][/doublepost]

That sucks.
Well your plan is not listed as one of the supported / compatible iPhone plans but I would still try to activate and see what happens. Or as an alternative, try to purchase a new Apple Watch LTE online (after you log in to myAT&T). It will also check and see if your plan is compatible.

My Smartphone Unlimited plan is not listed as being supported but the system shows that a wearable add-on plan can be added for the Apple Watch LTE using my existing unlimited plan, it just adds an addition to my plan which supports up to 10 devices.

Dave

Now just told that they can’t activate this over the phone. They have apparently had issues with SIM card fraud, and all activations need to occur in person at the store. Since none of my phones are under contract, and, I have paid for all of my devices in full, that drive may be to another cellular provider for activation.

Is this nationwide?

I’m able to activate my new LTE Watch with AT&T with no problem at all. I’m on the mobile share advantage plan though, and has setup NumberSync before on my line.

Let's backup a step. You should not have to go to a Retail store. Activations happen all the time with out the need to go to a Retail location. Do you already have a myAT&T Userid for your individual iPhone that you are going to use for the Watch? This s a key requirement to complete that setup process and configure NumberSync for the Watch.

Also what data plan do you have for your iPhone?

Dave

AT&T seems to have a problem with watches purchased from Apple. I’ve talked to a 3 people from AT&T and none of them can figure out how to activate the watch. I went to an AT&T store and the manager shrugged his shoulders and said there’s nothing he can do with an Apple Watch purchased from Apple.

I suppose I’ll try next week when they figure it out.

I was told the same thing by AT&T. There’s nothing that they can do over the phone.

No this is just an overwhelmed Customer Rep. The Drivers Lic question is the clue that things had come completely off the rails. That means the rep was creating a completely new line of service.

Dave

I got the DL question, too. Why on earth do they need to treat this like I'm activating a new line of service? I told this guy I've had this account for YEARS. I have 9 lines on a plan that can have up to 10. I don't care if this watch takes up the 10th slot, but I'm really not interested in them acting like I don't own this watch outright and just need to have it share my data that is already existing.

FWIW, I have a Mobile Share Value plan. I just chatted with a rep and they said I could still add the AW to my account for $10/month and that I would not have to switch to Mobile Share Advantage. Haven’t gotten home to fire up my AW yet so we’ll see what happens.

Can't get mine to work via the Watch app on my iPhone. I login to try and activate and it just times out, sending me back to the login page.

On AT&T's website when I got to set up NumberSync via my account page, it's asking for a "sync code" for my wearable... but Apple doesn't provide that it looks like.

And FYI, your cell phone number has to have it's OWN login on AT&T for NumberSync to work. If you are on a family plan with multiple phones, you need to make sure you create a login for JUST the number you want to use NumberSync with.

Excellent. Did you do yours through the watch/app or did you have to call AT&T?

I did the setup through the Watch App after doing a restore from unpairing my S2

I purchased mine through Apple pre-order, activated through Watch app during Cellular setup.

Ok. So I have now been told from an ATT rep that anyone who ordered a watch directly from Apple would not be activated until tomorrow. Something to do with information Apple was supposed to send them. She said she’s working overtime tomorrow to get these watches entered in. We’ll see.

Hmm... I should unpair my S2.

I'm still on hold with them... they're transferring me to the customer loyalty group. Where'd you land when they told you it could not be done? I'm about to switch my whole damned family to Verizon if they don't quit with this crazy ****.

This is simply not true. Look at the post just above your post. Apple purchased LTE watches setup / activate just fine on AT&T using the Watch / iPhone.

The major problem appears to be related to plans that are not supported and issues with the servers being overloaded and timing out.

Dave

Just got it working! Bought my Watch from Apple directly shipped to my house, set up cellular via the Watch app on my iPhone for AT&T (Mobile Share Advantage plan), and I'm good to go! Didn't have to call AT&T or anything... first time ever doing anything NumberSync related.

I am on rep number 3 at AT&T and he's about to transfer me to the Apple Care rep for some bizarre reason. They really are poorly trained.

I have a mobile share plan with 2 lines, all in good standing, and have a corporate discount. Was able to add the device online, but now stalled for a new reason.

I was able to enter the device details online this time, before the page was not loading, giving errors to my login credentials. Now I am in a holding pattern “needs review”. On the phone with them again, now that I have the imei in their system.

AT&T Activation steps

1. Pair your watch via the Watch app on your iPhone.
2. Open the Watch app to start the pairing process and follow the prompts.
3. Select Set up Cellular button.
4. Enter your AT&T Access ID and Password. This should be the Access ID that is associated with your
iPhone number. For assistance with your Access ID, visit Manage the wireless number for your AT&T Access ID
5. When you place a 911 call using your watch, the call will go over the cellular network when possible.
If no cellular network is available, device location data from nearby Wi-Fi networks will be used to help locate you.
If that data isn’t available, the address you provide will be used.
6. Make sure to check the box and read the Important Information for NumberSync on the 911 screen.
7. Select Verify Address.
8. On Sync requested screen, you should see a message indicating NumberSync should be available shortly. Select Ok.
9. Follow prompts to finish setting up your watch.

The Apple Watch is only able to sync to one phone at a time. If you wish to user your Apple Watch on another phone, unsync your phone and follow the steps above.

So, the last rep I had hung up on me completely... I guess I should just unpair this watch and retry setup, following the steps you have outlined here.

I didn't get the option to Set up Cellular last time, but I admit I wasn't watching it the whole time and may have missed a prompt someplace.

Thank you. I do not know why so many AT&T reps seem to have no idea how to do this when they are SELLING these devices.

Odd.

So I called AT&T because I received an email saying the watch had been added to the plan, but it wasn't working. I talked to an awesome rep. The problem was that the watch was showing as a phone. I gave her the IMEI number and she got that fixed. Now here's what had to happen next. I had to reset the watch and set it up as new again. Not a big deal since I had not done a thing to it and it's my first Apple Watch. Went through that process and it picked up the cellular and used the number sync. So all this other stuff is just not true.
