LOL

Steve was going to build AN ENTIRE CAR and Tim...worked with a consortium to define a specification for an app.

Hard hitting stuff. World-changing.

I predict that this will be the iPod of the 2020's.
Don’t quit your day job, I see little success as a future trend consultant.

Would be really nice if they nailed it. Major security benefits: Touch ID, giving temporary access to people, not susceptible to replay attacks like dumb IR keys. No more digging bulky keys out of my pocket (would still carry them though as backup).
How? Obviously this would include some kind of security like touch id, face id, or passcode.

If they transfer the functionality of the already existing ‘keyless’ options to phones it hopefully doesn’t add extra steps to the process - I want to walk up to my car and simply open the door like always, without the need to interact with my phone or watch. Otherwise this would be a huge step backwards regarding comfort and usability (no more opening the tailgate while holding grocery bags...), although it might add somewhat more security.

No Benz, no Porsche, thanks but Ill pass. But I am sure other customers will like it.

How can you 'pass' on something that already exists, but just not for the vehicles you prefer? You haven't been given the option to 'pass'...

That can work too. I personally thought about the version where you have to interact first just cause my car doesn't have keyless, and I don't like it anyway. I like knowing when my car is locked or unlocked, and yeah also security.

A common example is IBM. They stayed relevant for a long time while doing nothing but milking the old ideas.
I still think they're more exciting than IBM at the moment. I'd be sad if they went that route.

I bet this would be a 'gem' in the hackers world.. Plus its still on a phone.. The convenience is tearing us apart, when all a court needs to do is get the user to surrender a phone, and you've just single handedly destroyed the rabbit hole.

I am not entirely sure as to why this needs to be a standard... I can't see a situation where a customer will have any sort of issues so long as the car manufacturer's app has access to the basic APIs. Tesla's app works pretty well with the Model 3 already. I don't know what would improve for Tesla or the costumer by having it comply with some standard. Maybe I'm missing something...

Can't wait for "my phone died and since it was my keys and my wallet I'm completely screwed"

I mean, if you're concerned then bring a key and just use the connection as convenience - I generally don't stop caring my keychain or wallet unless I know for sure.

It'll be great to see though.

I like the idea of this but my iPhone battery doesn’t last long enough to make it feasible. I would end up having to carry my car keys anyway.

I’ve been waiting for something like this.

Also, people need to understand, this is just a standard that was described. Just because a specific car manufacturer wasn’t part of the consortium that derived the standard doesn’t mean they won’t use it. 802.11xx, Bluetooth, etc, are all standards defined by a limited set of people, but are used to make products by many, many more.

Yeah, I'd be fine with it too, but was resonding to the "now I only need my iPhone!" idea, which is a little dicey if you ask me.

My Apple Watch cost less than it costs to replace a key for any of my cars.

Yeah, but the key has the awesome side benefit of not looking like a horrible glass lozenge.

I can lock/unlock/start my Model S from my iPhone & Apple Watch already.

What I was referring to is more of a standard like what these groups of companies seem to be doing. I mean, I wouldn't think that Tesla would be against it since Musk released most (if not all) of Tesla's patents released to electric vehicle tech, so this would be okay. At least I think so. This doesn't make me hate Tesla though, in case you thought I was.

Oh not at all :). And it'd be perfectly fine if you did.

Not a member of the consortium doesn't mean Benz/Porsche won't support it. Market forces always win in a free market capitalist society.

Near future: Unlock your car with your iPhone using NFC 1.0 64bit. Yea!

5 years later: Apple has removed backwards compatibility of NFC 1.0 64bit and you can no longer unlock your car with any current selling iPhone devices which only support the new NFC 2.0 128bit in the iPhone XX or you can buy a new car or not upgrade your iPhone.

Digital is convenient but not always right. Soon you will hear of stuff like your car got hacked, and your driving routes have been leaked, and your car keys got ransomeware and won't start unless you pay someone in an unknown country in Asia to make it work again.

Not everything should be digital or online.
