does that setup look right? Or would you prefer it to be usb-c to USB-c (iPad cable from power adapinto CarPlay adapter and then iPhone cable?

rather than my current setup USB-c to usb-a female then CarPlay usb-a to usb-a female

when your iPhone is connected to wall power adapter and then USB to lightning does your phone charge or also does nothing?

i noticed the guy above that bricked his was able to get red/ green lights to flash, mine shows nothing.

I would try to connect the dongle directly to an iPhone/iPad charging block. Not the USB-c to USB adapter your using.

Then an official apple lightning cord to your iPhone and search the 192.168.50.2

BUXjr’s dongle didn’t show any lights either. But once he gave it CPR and brought it back to life the lights started working again.

Thanks ill try again. I do have a working CarPlay adapter but running the latest version so I don’t think I can get to the check updates page. Are you able to confirm when you use a power adapter inside and the iPhone cable to your iPhone does your phone charge or still shows nothing as if you are plugging it into a dead laptop?

Hey Guys -- I do show my iPhone as charging when it is connected via a lightning cable, to the dongle, powered by an iPad power block. I am a little skeptical of your Apple USB-C power adapter being converted back to USB-A. Do you have an older power block that is just straight USB-A, so you can eliminate that conversion?

Also, I'd use a factory Apple lightning cable (USB-A to Lightning connector) if you have one. It appears that you are using an aftermarket/3rd party cord there. These sometimes work for charging, but not data. That can be finnicky about that.

And, finally, @2018 Denali is 100% correct; my (previously) bricked unit (CPlay2Air) showed NO LIGHTS. Zero. The only light I could manage, was a millisecond blue "blip" at the very second I supplied power to it, either via the truck or the wall power block. That was it. Otherwise it would sit there, no lights, totally unresponsive.

To answer your other question, when I brought the phone back inside, AFTER getting to the "Discover a new version..." page within safari on a working adapter in my truck, my phone did indeed join my home's Wi-Fi and was happily on that network, when I plugged it into the bricked adapter, then plugged it into the wall. So, yes, it can be on your home Wi-Fi when you click the "Update" button on that webpage (192.168.50.2).

Hope that helps.

PS> If your good adapter is already current, you won't be able to get the "Discover a new version..." page, until they release a newer firmware. So you may need to sit out a week or two, till one comes on line for OTA.

thanks for the detailed reply. I have an iPad Pro charger (USB-C) to USB-C so I was using that and then even tried USB-C to USB-A and then used the CarPlay Adapter USB cable to the power adapter. None have worked. Units are showing no lights whatsoever. Before updating to 04-08-2020 I was able to get a solid green light when connected to my MacBook Pro USB-C charger but now I don’t get anything. Even when connecting with official lightning USB cable to iPhone it doesn’t charge which makes me think the units are completely bricked. Which adapters are you all using?

this is the one I am referring to

iPad USB-a adapter.
Yes, I have this one as well. And I have two other adapters that have also worked previously. See image below:

I will add, that the one on the left (Anker), is a "smart" power brick, and as others have mentioned before, this may not be a great idea to use for USB updates. I have, and it was no problem, but I guess I can see the issue with a managed charger not providing a consistent power stream. Just an FYI.

I cannot attest to my iPhone showing as charging, WHEN my unit was bricked -- not sure I really even looked, as I was so focused on doing that update. But after it did that forced update and rebooted, my phone definitely started showing that it was charging.

ok thanks so just to confirm.

In vehicle plug in working unit that does not have current firmware on it so you see the screen (attached)

Then connect iPad 12W power adapter to the USB-c to USB-a cable that came included with the CarPlay adapter.

Then use an official iPhone cable from CarPlay adapter into the iPhone. Press Update Firmware.

wait for it to complete, (unsure if I should see any lights at this stage?)

go back to car, test our bricked unit and report back here?

Yes.

I plugged my bricked unit into the power supply AND powered it up, before I plugged in the Apple lightning cable and then plugged my phone into that. Waited about 30 seconds, and then clicked "Update".

It'll spin up through the progress bar - up to 100%, then it will circle while it says "Upgrade in progress, please wait, may take a while to complete". Then, it will state, "Update Complete". At which point, I *think* the dongle will reboot, all by itself. So wait a couple minutes after the "all done", and then go try it in the car.

Good luck. (And, yes, I know this all sounds nutty...but it worked for me.)

Well, again, I'll be a blue-nosed gopher. This actually worked! I have a resurrected CPlay2Air unit now!

I did exactly as Denali outlined. After plugging into the lightning cable, I clicked "Update", it slowly worked its way from 0% to 100%, then gave me a spinning ring with the message "Upgrading, please be patient, this could take a while". It then reported, "Upgrade Complete". So I unplugged everything, took it back out to the truck and BAM, it came back to life! Head-unit saw it, and I was able to join it with my phone. All good!

Now here is the weird thing: After joining the adapter's WiFi manually in the truck, I navigated to 192.168.50.2 and it reported the firmware as 7.17 (which is what was on the adapter when I bricked it)! So I disconnected, and reconnected via Bluetooth (which then handed off to WiFi) and re-navigated to 192.168.50.2 and it is now offering to "Discover a new version..." to 2020.08.04.xxxx. I was too scaredy-cat to try another OTA update, so I shut down and have brought everything in the house to do a manual USB update to 2020.08.04 and see if that works.

So, to sum up, I am not totally sure exactly HOW this works, but it certainly does. I had a totally unresponsive, completely dead / bricked, CPlay2Air adapter, that would show absolutely ZERO lights, in the truck or when plugged into a power adapter, that now is working again. And while I'll be the first to admit that I was very skeptical about this technique, given my years of experience with networking and routing, I am extremely happy to report that it works! Or at least it did for my bricked unit. YMMV.

@2018 Denali, I don't know what kinda cereal you eat for breakfast, but it must be the "breakfast of champions", because once again, you my friend, "are da freakin' man"!

Hey @BUXjr I got ahold of Carlinkit via WhatsApp and explained to them how you and I were able to bring back a Bricked nonresponsive Dongle back to life. I provided them with the step-by-step method used. They confirmed their engineers didn’t know that was possible. They will run some test to confirm it works. They Will look into providing an IP address that can be used on the phone that allows the current available firmware to show up and push it through using the lightning cable to the bricked dongle to bring it back to life. This will eliminate the need of another working dongle to check for firmware update availability.

Hopefully they confirm soon this will save them thousands $ in returns they are having. If the user can Bring them back to life themselves.

They will owe you residuals or at least free upgrades on carlinkit dongles for life.

@2018 Denali I am assuming you have a Heads Up Display on your 2018 Denali. On the 07.29 update when you displayed the music info on the HUD it would often take a minute or two for the songs to change from the previous song played to the current one. Now on the 08.04 FW, no song info appears on the HUD. Can you confirm this on your end? Just for clarity, I have a 2017 Tahoe.

Wow. Just wow. That would be phenomenal. I always found it kinda silly that once there is a new firmware available, we could no longer see what version we were currently on. A separate IP address for current version, and 192.168.50.2 for updates. Brilliant. Bring it on!

Fingers crossed. We didn't hear back from @DeanCorp...wonder if it worked for him?

It didn’t work for DeanCorp. Not sure what his CarPlay dongle issue were.

Interesting stuff you guys are bypassing the AV unit in car and not using the memory stick method. Neat.

Understood. You are more cautious than I. I did not backup a copy of iOS13 before taking the plunge. I am an iCloud Storage guy and pretty much every setting or app I can pick to be backed up to the cloud nightly is checked. Meaning if I had to to a clean revert to 13 install, turning on iCloud will bring everything back.

I have to say, the improvements alone to CarPlay and how it works with our dongles in 14 was certainly worth the "risk" of going Beta 1. Additionally, I have only noticed a few bugs that really are more annoying than inhibitors. Wait until you guys try 14. It's going to be like Carlinkit issued a FW that improved the device greatly.

My phone has more space then my ipad your tempting me, lol. Seriously I am like you only Icloud back ups for the whole family gave up on local long ago because it was a PIA and as phones grew in capacity it took up too much space on my macbooks. That said please you and others be aware you can not restore ios 14 back up on an ios 13 device if one were to need to revert to IOS 13. In the case of my ipad, other then wasting my time no data of significance changed during my beta test.

That said on a phone you might not want to revert to data that was months old or you might not even still have an IOS 13 cloud back ups if all restore options were now IOS 14 because too much time has passed.

One can always wait/ tough it out for actual IOS 14 and then those issues are moot. Iphone 12s are due in October some time so I suspect that is about when Apple will release IOS14 unless they release IOS earlier then the phones.

I have a USB-A version of the Carlinkit on the 1-22 version of the firmware. I have a Hyundai Sonata, so I haven’t experienced many issues with the adapter beyond some lagginess. I’m tempted to upgrade to the 8-4 version. Is it possible to upgrade directly OTA, or will it need to be strictly via USB stick? Thanks!

Yes the wireless charger works great I put it adjacent to the cup holders hence why I preferred the phone like shape. Yes it chargers fast (i linked also to an add on for accessory outlet USB port/s that can provide enough power for faster charging). There us a rubber disc on top of charge plate and bottom that keeps the phone from sliding and the charger from sliding. Naturally if you car comes with wireless charging these items have less value.

Interested in 7/29 updates..... Will try soon....

Will do. Accessory = what used to be cigarette lighter socket. The particular Wireless charging device i linked is not car specific and needs usb power just like carlinkit does. More choices in devices that are usb then car accessory socket specefic.

How long does it take for full charging your smartphone or how much it will load in for example half an hour if you using wireless CarPlay while loading?

Smartphone and wireless charger get very hot?

I used to get the phone with the most storage and now I get the smallest and use iCloud. Works for me. I have a 64GB 11 pro max and only 30GB used. It’s a trade off in terms of cost. Pay for the storage on the phone or pay for iCloud.

Good point on restoring 14. Also worth noting that the Apple store won’t touch or trouble shoot a phone with beta OS. Even something like a cracked screen repair.

I live on the edge lol!

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. I think these units had a failed firmware update during a USB firmware update load, I think the discussed solution will work only for vehicles that had failed during an over the air update.

So I updated to 08/04 on my 2020 Hyundai Palisade. I'm on IOS 14 Beta 4. This update seems to be better in some ways, but worse in others.

The good:
Connection is crazy fast now. It seems like maybe the device starts booting as soon as it gets power, which on the Palisade means as soon as you open the door. It now seems to connect as quickly as a wired connection. Very impressed.

The bad:
Every time I have connected so far it connects to a black screen - even from cold start, and without messing with the IOS UI while it connects! I have to press the car's Media button, then switch back to CarPlay to get it to work.

So close, but yet...

This black screen bug has been talked about some over the last couple of weeks. I encountered it when updating to 7.17 and now on 8.4. It is so annoying and I’ve brought it up to customer support several times. Nothing we can do but wait for them to fix it. Let us know if you figure out a way to fix it, but looks like a future update is the only solution.
