This upgrade method is different from the past, you need to pay attention to 100% follow our upgrade steps, otherwise the dongle will die.
Please refer to the attached picture.
About upgrading the dongle/power adapter to upgrade the dongle:
●Preparation materials: product dongle, power adapter, USB flash memory
●Method:
1. Please save the Auto_Box_Update.img file on a USB flash drive
(The format must be FAT32/allocation unit size 1024bit or the default value) root directory, and insert it into the USB port of the product.
2. Insert the product into the USB charger (please do not use the USB port of the car and the computer!!!)
3. Wait 2-3 minutes until the red and blue LEDs light up at the same time. Unplug the USB flash drive.
4. When upgrading the product, do not turn off the power or remove the dongle.
●For details, please refer to the attached picture.
After a successful upgrade, you can return to the car for testing.
Looking forward to your reply,
best wishes. "
To clarify, here's what my problem was with the device:
Mine wasn't completely dead. The lights would be on, "red", and it would broadcast a WiFi SSID "AutoBox-582f" (if you see it, you can connect with the Password 12345678). My problem was, the USB-C to USB-A connection didn't provide whatever the car's need to detect CarPlay, and my phone would no longer connect via Wireless CarPlay. Basically, a brick.
The update they had me do, that resolved it was an updated firmware file and then you connect the USB-C to USB-A cable to a power supply (not the stereo, I just used an iPhone 5w charger). Format a USB drive as FAT32, and place the IMG file on the USB drive. Plug in the device, let it power up (usually 30 seconds or so, until the light is red, and I saw the WiFi SSID), and then connect the flash drive. It flashed red/green a few times after connected, and then rebooted. I gave it another 5 minutes (just to be safe) before pulling the power adapter and testing on my stereo. Resolved the issue, and my stereo started to detect the device/CarPlay again.
Let me know if you have any questions.
@Sam Abbott
Thanks for posting the link and the clarification.
The fw did not work as my Carlinkit U2W with the USB A plug is bricked which has only the blue led lit up when plugged in.
Anyways, here's a short backgrounder on how I managed to brick my device - not that anybody is interested to know.
So my USB Type A Carlinkit which I bought thru eBay last Jannuary was working fine without any issues that were being reported here in this thread, no 5min or so audio glitching, no black screen, no out of the blue disconnection. It just worked out of the box. And because of this, I never had the urge to update the darn thing.
Anyways, fast forward to July 24, 2020, I was browsing around Lazada (its an online shop here in SE Asia similar to Amazon and eBay), and lo and behold, there are lots of ads for Carlinkit U2W Type C version and were priced at around US$90.35 with free shipping. So I thought this is a good opportunity to "upgrade" to the USB C version which is having good reviews from here in this forum particularly the "faster" bootUp and connection, etc etc...
So... I paid US$80 for the dongle [used a discount code]. Ordered July 24th and received the package July 31.That was fast considering the COVID19 situation down here and the dongle coming in from CN.
Tested the new USB C dongle on my GM vehicle, seemed better as was described by the experience of other members here. Checked if there was an update, and there indeed was an available update [7-17] but I din't update as the dongle is working flawlessly.
Two weeks ago, I decided to update the USB A version, checked for an update, it said something like 6-17 was available, clicked update, got stuck at 90% for a couple of seconds until it finally rebooted. After carplay came back on, I checked for an update again and it said 8-10 was available, clicked update, Update Success message, it rebooted, and then nothing!!!!
And that folks, is how I managed to brick my USB A dongle.
This forum has the most comprehensive discussion regarding these carplay dongles, and right now, I'm just waiting for a post that would, or could, somehow resurrect a bricked dongle. LoL
BTW, that USB A dongle had fw 2019.12.19 on it before It got messed up.
Cheers!
