Just for the heck of it, I tried to update my Carlinkit USB-C adapter from the 2020.08.27 joyeauto firmware to the 2020.09.17 U2W firmware. Surprisingly, the update worked and my Carlinkit adapter is now back to the original startup screen and reports 2020.09.17.1649 as the version. Considering I was one of the "lucky" few that could install the joyeauto firmware in the first place, ymmv on anyone else trying this.... especially since it didn't work on my 2020.08.27 flashed CP2A unit.

However.......

I no longer have a need for either adapter, as I pulled the trigger this morning and bought a Pioneer W4660NEX with both wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto support built-in. So I am selling both @ $100 each (I know I can get more on eBay but I don't deal with them anymore and honestly - given the track record of these devices I don't think they are worth anything higher than what I'm asking). If anyone is interested or knows anyone that is interested, feel free to send me a PM.

Good to know there's a path off of 08.27, at least for the USB-C adapters. However, it continues to work very well for me so I don't dare mess with it. Fortunately, I never flashed it onto my old USB-A adapter. I purposely keep that one on older firmware so it can serve as a backup if flashing my USB-C one goes awry.

It was working fine for me as well... I just never thought to try before since I buried it in my center console after it got stuck on 08.27; it was easier to just test the USB-A version instead. If I hadn't decided to upgrade my headunit, I would never have pulled it out and tried to upgrade it.

How did you proceed?
For me the Update didn‘t start.

If it didn't start, then you can not change it at this time. As I said: Your Mileage May Vary - especially since the install image that worked for my Carlinkit adapter did nothing with my CarPlay2Air adapter that also has 2020.08.27 installed. Which makes perfect sense when you remember that not everyone could install that particular firmware in the first place.

I got the Carlinkit 2 from Amazon a couple of days ago, and it’s been working very well so far. I just plugged it in, and it launched into wireless CarPlay fairly quickly. I wish the cable wasn’t so short because the unit just hangs in the air, but I’m pleasantly surprised. I’m hesitant to update the firmware (if there’s a newer one available). I have a Kenwood excelon 9905s in a Jeep Wrangler. The Amazon description said the unit only works with Audi factory head units. 🤷‍♂️
do NOT update - from my experience it will break and never boot again

What vehicle do you have? You can upgrade to 8-22 manually using thumb drive method at your own risk. The download link is in post #4171 right above your original post.

i have a c-class 2019. i have tried upgrading manually to few different versions mentioned in this thread but nothing works. the LEDs are flashing for few sec then stop. the version doesnt change. tried different usb pendrives.

I have the Carlinkit 2.0 usb-c and "joyeauto" firmware 2020.08.27 but it is impossible to update to version 2020.09.17. :(

Got a copy of the 2020.09.17 firmware please? Link a page or so back seems
To be dead now. Going to try the same with my usb c unit stuck on the joyeauto firmware having a few niggles with it

As always, unzip the file first.
I do not make any guarantees, warranties, or promises that this file will override the joyeauto firmware for anyone else that tries to install it.

For @LarryJoe33 and others that might be interested in some number comparisons: On my new Pioneer HU the time to change tracks using either my steering wheel controls or the head unit controls seems to be 3 or 4 seconds and it stops whatever is playing immediately upon receiving the command. Pioneer seems to have removed the annoying warning message at boot up also and as such the time it takes to go from HU power on to wireless CarPlay is about 10 seconds.

The time to change tracks could be caused by my taking advantage of my unlimited data and having High Quality Streaming enabled on my iPhone - I'll test it on the way to work with that turned off to see if there is a change.

Thanks - just tried that one mine (USB C) and it doesn't take the firmware. My USB thumb drive has a light on for activity and it doesn't even flash as it's it's not even attempting.

Is that the same flash drive you used to flash 08.27? Maybe try formatting it and try again?

Thanks for the upload - just tried to flash my usb c unit with the firmware and no luck - as above seeing no activity light flashing on the USB stick and just a solid red light on the car play unit.. odd how we see different results!

Using the usb I’ve always used for flashing these - also did try a re-format just incase.

😓o_O

I am such an idiot. When I installed my new HU this morning, I couldn't figure out why it kept saying that a connection couldn't be made on my factory USB port and the error stopped when I would disconnect the cable and also stopped once I setup wireless CarPlay.

Then I remembered that the Carlinkit USB-C was still plugged into my factory USB port from when I went driving last night.

Just as odd as how the file I used to install 2020.08.27 worked on both my devices but when other people tried to use my specific copy, it didn't work.
True - I was hopeful as we both have the usb c units and were both “stuck” on the joyeauto firmware - but I guess will try again with another one later on!

Just trying to think out loud through other variables here... and this is probably a long shot, but...

We do know that when the Carlinkit is powered on it emits BT and WiFi signals. Maybe in some cases the iPhone connects to one of those signals prior to the firmware flash, possibly influencing whether the flash occurs. Might be worth trying a USB flash with your phone in airplane mode?

Good thought - just gave this a go and no luck with mine :(

Has anyone tried the method of restoring soft bricked units? Checking for updates on one device that is out of date but then plugging the phone into a device running the joyeauto firmware and starting the update?

Thanks. For reference, on my Maserati system which is UConnect, track changes are immediate under iOS14. They were maybe 1.5 seconds on iOS13. Delay is 500. Anything lower produces garbage.

I was feeling brave and tried to up from 2020.08.27 via the head unit rather than a USB plug. It doesn't work, and the behaviour for me is this

USB drive plugged in when Carlinkit inserted into head unit - No power is supplied to the USB drive, Carplay doesn't start (light stays red).

USB drive plugged in after Carlinkit already inserted into head unit - Power is supplied to the USB drive but update is not performed. Carplay stays active.

I think this firmware just doesn't attempt to upgrade from USB on boot. Although it doesn't explain @shadowmyst1975 was able to fix.

I had forgot that GM sold Maserati to Chrysler :p

Are you taking about the time to switch to the next track or time to start playing the audio? Switching is immediate on my Pioneer. It's the audio start that takes between 2 to 5 seconds, depending on if I am using the High Quality Streaming mode or not.

There was a time it could have worked that way... but they removed the "Open Flash Mode" option when they added the new settings menu.

I was referring to track change, but I don't have any delay either. Yeah, Chrysler owns Maserati as well as Alpha Romeo. The biggest jab Maserati gets on the internet. Doesn't bother me, Ferrari make the engine, there are definitely some Chrysler switches and electronics incorporated in all Maserati's. If you know cars, Italians suck at technology and gadgets, UConnect is welcomed. First Maserati though after a long list of BMW's, wanted a change and the Ghibli is sexy. When the warranty is up, I will go back to the M5. Germans know how to do cars right. Speaking of, lowly VW makes Porsche.

What kind of car you got that aftermarket Pioneer in?
