So, today I received my Carlinkit U2W-01-PLUS which I ordered on AliExpress and tried to plug it into my Volkswagen Discover Media Radio, which has WIRED CarPlay coming from the factory.
The instruction says to then open up the Bluetooth Menu and look for a new device to connect to, but a new device NEVER shows up for me.
The car stereo does recognize a new carplay device waiting to connect, but I can't connect to my carlinkit adapter via bluetooth. All I get is a red LED constantly illuminated on the device.

What are my options? Can I somehow do a firmware upgrade? I've been waiting for almost 2 months for this dongle to ship over to my place, I'd really hate for it to be a DOA piece of electronics.

Guessing by the fact you’ve been waiting ages...it’s probably the old firmware that needs a usb update. You can find it somewhere buried in this thread

actually Googling Carlinkit U2W-01-PLUS it looks like you’ve bought the wrong one. That appears to be for android head unit only.

New version again today. I’ve updated both of my dongles successfully although a friend now has the red led.

Now fixed, had me sweating for a moment. I couldn’t even get a wired Apple CarPlay. Powered the car down for 20minutes and it worked again.

This was the unit I ordered: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000205787274.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.1a774c4dYjE8FA - should be the right one, correct?
Also: I don't have a android head unit, but the device still shows up as a carplay device waiting to connect. I'm just not getting any bluetooth signal

What’s best way to delete and start again with the new firmware?

I know there is a new firmware from 23rd Dec so want to try, but mine has never ever worked anyway.

I can’t see any Bluetooth or WiFi showing anything to do with the dongle (CarLinkIt), so can’t delete them.

All I get is red LED and nothing on car screen it connection on iPhone.
I have the exact same issue, but on a newly bought device. All I have i the red LED and no wireless connectivity whatsoever. (It still shows up as carplay device on the head unit tho')

Yes that does appear to be the correct one. I would update it via usb first step...

  1. Please download the firmware update file from here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0268/4171/0674/files/Auto_Box_Update.img?204
  2. Please save update firmware file on USB flash drive (Flash drive format must be FAT32)
  3. Plug the flash drive into the CPLAY2air adapter.
  4. Plug CPLAY2air to USB power charger/wall charger for your iPhone. Please don’t use the USB port of the car or computer!!
  5. Please wait 2-3 minutes, until the red LED and the blue LED will light up at the same time.
  6. Please unplug the adapter from the USB charger and remove the USB flash drive from the adapter.
  7. Please now plug the product into the USB port of the car.
  8. Please wait until the new window will appear on the vehicle's screen.
  9. Connect your phone to the WIFI SSID network which is shown on the screen.
  10. Once connected, use the camera app to scan QR code on the screen or input 192.168.50.2 on your phone browser.
  11. Once the software will be activated, please click the button "Reboot"

I have the same exact situation with Carplay2air USB Dongle and 2018 Honda Accord touring.

I bought Wireless Carplay USB Dongle for factory headunits with carplay from www.carplay2air.com

Car headunit detects the Dongle as a Carplay device and asks me to enable Carplay for this device. But no progress after that. Do not see carplay icon on the headunit and no carplay device in headunit settings menu.

It's only constant red light on the Dongle. I don't see any Bluetooth or WiFi device in iPhone menu.

Yeah, so my issue is fixed now. Apparently I got a rather old unit which required the USB Firmware update.

The upgrade instructions can be found here: http://www.carlinkit.com/newsinfo/353851.html
After you have upgraded the firmware to the newer release you will not be able to do any firmware upgrades via USB anymore.
Go to your car and plug the dongle into the USB-Port which you normally use for carplay.
A sort of an activation screen appears prompting you to connect to a wifi network (the device still does not spin up a bluetooth connection, but all of a sudden a wireless network appears)
Connect to the new wifi network with your smartphone, browse to the requested IP Adress (or scan the qr code displayed) and you should see a pending software update.
Update your software as suggested in the browser.
After the device hits 100% it should automagically reboot, you car stereo might throw you out of car play during this, just be patient.
As soon as the carplay dongle returns it spins up a BT connection, which you now should be able to pair to.
Your iPhone will ask you if you'd like to use wireless CarPlay with this connection. Say yes and your're DONE.

FINALLY

Thanks @alanplum for pointing me into the right direction with the software update

2018 Mercedes CLA 250. I updated to the newest firmware (12/31/2019) and it seems to have resolved my issue of having to put the car in reverse to get it to connect wirelessly. So far so good. I’ll keep testing and report back

I had a problem updating the dongle to the latest version OTA today. It crashed part way through and then I couldn't get it working again. After a long time, it eventually was recognized by my car again and booted up. I was able to try the update again and it worked.

My car NEVER recognizes the dongle after an update, so it makes it a pain. I have to wait until the car fully powers off the head unit, restart the car and then plug in the dongle and hope it works. It's probably related to the bug that my car won't recognize the dongle unless I plug it in after the head unit is fully booted. That's my biggest pain with it right now. I can't just leave it plugged in.

But if you use a normal cable to the phone CarPlay works plugged in at startup?

All the people who’s dongle works, if you leave it plugged in and then plug in a cable to it, then you’re iPhone, does it work over wired CarPlay?

Mine doesn’t even do this, so wonder if my head unit doesn’t even recognise it.

Have to find another car with CarPlay to try and update to see if works at all.

Both you guys have CLAs yeah? Damnit I just returned mine yesterday! No more issues with the device constantly looping through trying to activate and failing?

I might purchase it again in a few months when more of the kinks are ironed out.

First, I have a F-150 with Sync 3 and the latest update makes the Carplay2Air dongle flawlessly.

The only thing I have noticed is the lag between pressing the next button on the steering wheel until the audio actually changes. The lag is the same as using your phone on a Bluetooth connection. So nothing crazy.

Second, I read all the pages in this thread and thank you to the folks that consistently posted on here! You gave me all the information I needed in order to get this product to work successfully.

Third, I want to give a shout out to @mikejd1 because I watched his roller coaster of emotions during this whole process and it was truly inspirational. He went from a believer to completely giving up to a believer. Lol

Just being funny, again thank you for the folks that consistently updates this thread in order give all the info needed to get people up and running with the Carplay2air dongle.

Happy New Year everyone! Just installed build 12.31. All went smoothly but the issue of freezing track info on Audi dash still persists.

Happy New Year too! I made an update for the first time yesterday and it worked. If something goes wrong during the update and nothing works anymore, can I use this file to reset the adapter to the delivery status and then update again? Also in the future?

Afraid not. Once it’s done it’s done. No more usb updates after it. All firmware must be done OTA

Same issue here as well on my 11 pro max. I tested with iPhone XS and 7 and track info are not freezing. I think it something with my 11 pro. I will try with another 11 pro tomorrow.
Edit:
I tested again with iPhone 7 and it freezes. So it’s a bug.

Since I updated to the Dec 30 software (and then the Dec 31 software), my iPhone appears to be losing charge much faster than usual when CarPlay2Air is running. Has anyone else seen this?

2018 Mercedes CLA 250 update....multiple successful wireless connections with 12/31/2019 firmware update.

I found one glitch however. When using Waze, after the first directions were announced I could no longer control the volume. To fix the issue I turned the head into off and back on. It connected AGAIN wirelessly and the volume control was back to normal.

If they come out with another firmware update I’m going to be afraid to try it because this is working so well right now, volume issue included!

I'm gonna keep following your posts buddy, until I'm confident enough to re-purchase the carplay2air dongle. I loved the convenience of wireless carplay but did not enjoy having to go through all of the painful workarounds in order to get it working.
