Tried a another stick this morning definitely formatted in FAT32, only 32GB. Tried the 1-22,3-06 and the 2.0 Auto_update pack. Nothing, same thing. Going back to Amazon today for an exchange which says won't be here until May 2 even with Prime. Should have left well enough alone. I didn't think you could brick these things via USB updates, but I guess I found a way. When the new one arrives, I am just going to install it, update it over the air and use it for a while. I didn't even get a chance to experience it very much.

Anything I can do to rid my car or my phone of any remnants of the one I am returning just to be sure the new one sets up clean? BT or Wifi? I did remove the BT entry it created.

2.4GHz doesn't have sufficient bandwidth for wireless CarPlay. So all versions of Carlinkit (and indeed all implementations of Wireless CarPlay) use 5GHz WiFi. Whoops. Looks like I'm wrong about this.

I posted about this redesign a week or so ago. If you zoom in on the photo, you can see U2W silscreened on the front. So I think it's unlikely that this adapter uses the U2H firmware. I could be wrong, of course. Please post your experience after you receive it.

Are you saying that the new one might actually be different and improved? Not following the U2H vs. U2W comments? I ask because I returned the old school one for a replacement, but I may take a shot at this one against my better judgement because it is not Prime and will ship from China and is probably not even in fabrication. Returning it would be a bitch and would cost me shipping and waiting.

Also, someone on Amazon posted a question and Carlink answered. I think all they are saying is the cable is different. Big whoop:

Thanks for finding the answer posted by Carlinkit on Amazon. That actually confirms what I suspected--that the new design is just a new casing/cable. I was basing that on the silkscreened model number on the redesign still saying U2W. That's the same as the "old" adapter. The redesign is probably still preferable to have--a detachable cable preferable for folks who need/want to use a longer length, and the status LED is much easier to see. That said, unless you need the ability to use a longer cable, it's not worth paying more/waiting longer IMHO.

Sorry you've had such bad luck. I'm not sure what the blinking blue LED means--it might mean the firmware is corrupt and it's stuck in its bootloader mode. I would suggest getting in contact with Carlinkit support via Whatsapp (that's their main support avenue), but I guess moot now since you're doing an exchange.

I don't blame you for being gunshy to do a USB update on your replacement. But I'd just remind you that in all these posts I don't recall anyone else getting a brick. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened to others, but seems extremely rare. If you do decide to try again, don't use whatever USB drive you used right before getting the flashing blue light. It may be that drive experienced a read error and the adapter was left in a partially-flashed state or something. Just speculation on my part, but I would not try to use that flash drive again.

I'd propose these "Best Practices" for doing a USB update:
1. Use a very small USB flash drive. I admit this is just based on what others stated in previous posts. But it could have something to do with newer/larger drives being USB 3.x, whereas older ones are all USB 2.0. Or maybe it's just due to ease of formatting in the required FAT32 scheme. I have been using a freebie 4GB USB 2.0 drive with great success.
2. Use a USB flash drive that has an activity LED, if possible. This will help you see if the firmware flash is occurring or not.
3. Use a quality 5V USB power adapter--ideally use a genuine Apple iPad (5V 2A+) plug. I'm not sure if the iPhone 5V 1A plugs provide enough juice (they very well may, but when in doubt it's always better to use an adapter with more amperage--so long as it's 5V, which all USB adapters should be).
4. This may not matter, but I had better luck using a Windows machine to put the firmware file on the flash drive. A couple times when I used a Mac the firmware didn't flash. I wondered if maybe it's the hidden files macOS puts on external drives. I had a 100% success rate using my Windows 10 machine to put the .img file on the root of the drive.
5. Plug the flash drive into the Carlinkit, then plug the Carlinkit into your high quality USB AC adapter. Then always make sure you wait at least a minute or two before unplugging anything--especially if the Carlinkit hasn't displayed the continuous blue LED. Once you see the blue LED lit constantly, you should be safe to unplug the power, then unplug the USB drive. If it's going to work then usually it takes about 30-45 seconds. But if it hasn't worked after that long, you may want to leave everything plugged in for another minute or so just to be safe.

EDIT: And I would throw out the copy/copies of the firmware you previously downloaded just in case they are corrupt. Re-download them directly from Carlinkit's site before trying to flash again.

Thank you for this. Yeah, if there was someone who was going to brick it, that would be me. I am pretty technically adept, I kind of thought the same thing, it was stuck in a loop for sure. This is why I cut bait and returned it. Thanks for your feedback on the "new" one. I did post a question on Amazon to the merchant specifically asking about 5ghz support being an new feature, we will see how they will respond. Just dropped off my short lived wireless experience at the UPS store. Gotta love Amazon for that. I also chatted with Amazon on the "new" 5ghz product in terms of ease of returns and they said it's pretty much up to the merchant as it's not a Prime product, so read: just like buying straight from China.

Thanks for your tips on formatting, OS's preferences and downloading fresh files. My plan is to take what I get over the air, but I am a tinker'er, so we will see if I try to go "unofficial" again.

You are a big help in this thread and your posts have been valuable to me. I hope my new/old toy ships soon. It was really cool while it worked before I bricked it.

I got the 2020-3-6 update installed and it fixed every issue I was having. Drove approximately 45 minutes with no sound breakdown, and had a phone call with acceptable lag. I definitely recommend this one, and will not be moving from it for a while.

I'd like to give it a test but it looks like this firmware has been removed, I get an error 404 when I try to download it.
I have this really annoying lag during phone calls. It would be really nice if someone could upload 2020-03-06 firmware and post the link here. Thank you !

I can upload it when I get back to my computer. I will try to post a link. I think someone posted a zip of it earlier in the thread as well.

My “Version 2” “new shape” dongle or whatever you want to call it has been shipped.

due to arrive April 21st and I can currently track it.

Can’t wait to see...

I kind of wish they had a version that isn’t a dongle at all but more like a tiny flash drive.

I suspect we won’t be seeing any more software updates for the current model and they are concentrating on the new version.

Nice. Keep us posted. I’m still tempted to order it, it’s just the China return thing. I never got to really use my last one for an extended period, but from the hour or so of use, I was 50/50 on returning it. This was why I tried to flash it. Had it disconnect after a quick run into a store and an incoming phone call crashed it. I would return it if it didn’t reconnect after getting gas or running into a store.

If your new one uses the same firmware it’s the same thing. Curious to know this specifically.

I doubt that. If it’s simply a hardware change for looks and plugging it in it will likely use the same software to actually run, which means updates for all at the same time.

We have seen evidence of a different download file name just before the site went off.

Eh.... we will see. But while it will possibly need slightly different drivers I believe the base code for the actual CarPlay will be the same.

Now in East Midlands. Just customs to go.

I can’t believe your going to get your new version from China faster than I will get my replacement. Did you go through Amazon?

Looks like it doesn’t ship for 1-3 weeks and delivery date is June/July. Did it say this when you ordered?

I ordered it through Amazon this morning. Technically, I now have three of them on order:

CarPlay2Air - this has been stuck in shipping since 3/24 and PayPal refunded me but the supplier insists I will get it.
Carlinkit 2.0 - the replacement to the one I bricked
Carlinkit 2.0 - New factor and "maybe" 5ghz wifi - ordered this morning

Just ordered one this morning from aliexpress. used the free shipping so probably won’t get mine for a few weeks. Should work on a 2019 Seat Tarraco don’t you think? It’s just the Seat version of the VW Tiguan

Works in my 2019 SEAT Ibiza so no reason it won’t for you.

Don't know much about Aliexpress. I assume they are like an Amazon? And in this case, the item still ships from the manufacturer in China? Amazon says it ships in "1-3 weeks". I am hoping that is not accurate as you guys are getting it shipped quickly.

All the offering on Ali say ships from China with a 5/10 delivery date.
