I can’t comment on whether the hardware is different (But it must be due to the addition of a USB-C port)

it’s been working 100% reliable for me so far. I can definitely confirm that the steering wheel buttons for answering the phone work perfect on the new dongle, but do not on the old dongle with the same date firmware.

Take from that what you will, but I have no regrets in my purchase of the new one.

Without pulling them apart (which obviously I will not do) I can’t see how the old internals would fit in the new internals.

It is of my opinion it IS new hardware, but using similar ICs that allow the firmware to be compatible.

It happens in every day life.....Windows or Ubuntu certainly doesn’t require the exact same hardware for each install.

Probably not helping myself here, but I’m happy to sell my old V1 dongles in UK if anyone is interested. I won’t be offering support, but I can verify they work by video before shipping :)
Thank you sir. I am going to keep my order for the new one, if I don't, I will always wonder what I was missing;) On the firmware, you are 100% correct, one firmware package can support multiple devices and hardware configurations, see iOS which not only contains OS updates, it contains firmware.

after reading your thoughts I’m really regretting not going for the dhl option. Mine is still in a warehouse in China somewhere waiting to get on a plane probably. Have you tried it in your seat ibiza ?
I haven’t actually. But I suppose I could. I’ll pop outside and test it now for you.

Audio interference? My audio has been fine. Never had any interference.

I haven’t paid enough attention to the button outlines to be fair, but I know what you mean. I’ll keep an eye out.
I shouldn’t call it interference. But if you have a minute can you play music and then open google maps or waze. While in google maps or waze, drag the map around at a moderate pace and see if the audio freezes up, please.

I don’t have google maps or waze Installed. I refuse to use anything from google.

Any other app not by google I can try for you?

That works perfect. Thanks for that. Didn’t really take that long to startup either. Do the steering wheel buttons work?

Not true. Apple releases a different .ipsw file for each model of iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc. Yes they all run the same operating system, but the firmware component is different. So if you have an iOS 13.4.1 package for your iPhone 11, you cannot flash that same package to an iPhone XS, or even an 11 Pro.

I'm not saying there are zero differences between the older and newer style. But the manufacturer said they use the same components inside, and both use the hardware designation U2W. Until someone knowledgable takes apart the casing to examine the circuit boards we won't know for sure.

I ask because the CarPlay2Air arrived and the "new" one hasn't shipped, so I can cancel it still if there really is no difference besides the case, lights and cable.

A cautionary note - when I first ordered a CarPlay2Air unit, I emailed to cancel it 12 hours later, after reading the comments on this page. I received no response until 2 days later, when they said it had already shipped and could not be cancelled. It actually did ship a few hours after that. Thus, it is dangerous to assume you can cancel just because you think it has not shipped.

Of course, when it arrived it did not work, but they still insisted I had to pay the $33 to ship it back to China, when I thought I had purchased it from an American company, as was indicated by their web site. This company is fraud from start to end. Their phony website even claimed 24/7 telephone support! Ha! The only phone number on their website is out of service or no longer working.

The CP2A is already in my hands. The new Carlinkit is ordered through Amazon. I am sure I can cancel until it’s marked shipped but I’m not. I have no intention of returning the CP2A. I’ll just sell it. Not worth the hassle. I agree, the company is ****.

Descriptions for the new version.

What I find interesting about that article is they explicitly push the steering wheel buttons and the music in the dash, the 2 things that don't work on the V1 dongle reliably, but do with my V2.

Those features work for me on my v1 model.

The new version shipped and I installed the CarPlay2Air in seconds and updated it to 1.22. I don’t plan on bricking this one and to actually use it until the new one arrives and then swap over and see if whatever bugs the CarPlay2Air has with my car are resolved with the new one. Or maybe new bugs will be introduced.

In terms of steering wheel buttons, they work fine already. I don’t get the song reference in the center dash, but I don’t it with wired CP either. I do get it with every other media source...BT, SD Card, SiriusXM, Radio.

On the Volvo, changing tracks etc. Work with V1 but you cant answer and end calls from the steering wheel. Also the auxiliary display in the dash or heads up don’t display. V2 solves both these issues. Hence me ordering one to replace my V1.

Can you expand on what you mean by V1 vs. V2? If you mean version 2.0, I thought this was just a software update or by V2 do you mean the new one from Carlinkit with the new form factor?

The new form factor

Ok thanks for the clarification. My main problem with this one (CarPlay2Air) is when I stop the engine for a few minutes to run into a store or get gas, it won’t reconnect. If the car sits for a bit, it will boot up. I’m guessing this has to do with power still going to the USB for a certain amount of time before the car completely shuts down. A plug and unplug of the USB solves it, but this is something I’m not will to deal with. Hopefully version 2 solves this.

Same here. Steering wheel buttons and song info in my instrument cluster have always worked in my car--even with the v1 dongle.

In terms of the power to my car, I can adjust the time delay for power to cut off after engine off through the interface. I like it at 5 minutes, but can try 0.

I remembered this post of yours from before. Did you try setting the time delay to zero? As long as that is cutting power to your car's USB ports (and thus the Carlinkit) then it should be the functional equivalent of unplugging and replugging the adapter.

Agreed, and I set it to zero when I got to work this morning. I did this after stopping for gas, etc. So hopefully it works. I didn't have my other one long enough to test it. I bricked it on day one!

Hi Larry, still enjoying my CarPlay2Air on my side, no issue on reconnecting as the USB port shuts down as soon as the car stops, so reconnecting easily even within 15 seconds, it works perfectly. Music info shows up in the instrument cluster (as it does with my wired version) too. I think although it is basically the same device we might be facing a situation where car manufacturers have chosen different option of info sharing with CarPlay and how they make them available to end-users, like not showing CarPlay info in your instrument cluster display but showing other media info or the availability of sterring controls, which works fine on my Lexus.

Anyhow, will keep following the thread as the 2.0 version form-factor of Carlinkit is in entering the market (and available on the Canadian Amazon website !) to see if it works with Nissan as CarPlay2Air nor CarlinKit 1.0 are no go with Nissan's. I might also order one and try it and enjoy the easy return process of Amazon if not working in the Murano.

Sounds good. I will definitely keep you posted. I am guessing, best case scenario I get the 2.0 a week from now, worst, 3 weeks. I will have plenty of time to play with the 1.0 to be able to remark on discernible differences.
