I'm actually seriously considering allowing users to toggle between Dark Sky and Weather Underground, but access to Weather Underground *may* require an additional purchase because their data is significantly more expensive than Dark Sky's.

You can do tiers in subscriptions now, so I could potentially do a tier for Apple Watch access to Dark Sky data, and another tier for access to Weather Underground data.

What does everyone think about this?

I LOVE it! Weather Underground is very accurate and their watchOS app sucks. I would pay more.....

I would definitely be interested in a tier option like that. I love the idea of Carrot Weather, but I have never had much success with Dark Sky where I live. I have downloaded it a few times and always end up deleting it. That has been what has prevented me from purchasing Carrot Weather.

IF I had the option to choose Weather Underground or Foreca, I would purchase Carrot Weather.

Guess I'll look into that then right after the release of the next CARROT app on Thursday :p
Option to choose weather source could be included with previously purchased premium upgrade! :p

Kidding. But if there is a tier charge, perhaps just roll it into future premium purchases charge and then maybe charge a small "upgrade" fee to people that have already paid...if that's even possible?

There are all sorts of complicated things you can do with subscriptions, with different tiers and what not. I want to make it as simple as possible, though, so it's really just going to depend on how much adding another weather service would cost me!

Count me in on this. I actually deleted CARROT because I was fed-up of Dark Sky's rubbish forecast. I used the stock weather app for a while and it was quite accurate but I missed CARROT's complications on my watch and menu bar stuff on my Mac so I loaded it up again and reactivated my subscription (please forgive a humble meatbag).

Does Carrot Weather have live radar maps on the Apple Watch? I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. It's very useful while on a motorcycle to stop & glance down and see if I'm out running the storm lol. I've also had issues with pretty much all the weather watch apps not updating until after I click on the watch and wait a minute or so.

Sadly no, no radar on the Apple Watch yet. That's on my list for a future update, however.

I haven't had any issues with the app not updating on the Apple Watch, though.

With CARROT Weather, can I put a small complication on my analogue watch face telling me the current wind speed in m/s rather than in mph?

Thanks.

Yep! CARROT supports 4 different wind speed units, miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, and knots.

Dark Sky just corrected a few bugs in their current condition forecasts to make them more accurate. Has anyone that was experiencing issues with forecast accuracy seen improvements?

http://status.darksky.net/2017/05/12/bug-fixes-current-conditions-alerts.html
I'm not sure if it's related, since as you mention the fixes seem to deal with the reporting of current conditions, but yes, the 24-72 hour forecast was usually 5-10 degrees off from every other source. Now it is within 1-3 degrees, which is no big deal to me. I'll keep monitoring it.

Forecasts from Dark Sky are pretty inaccurate again. Trending 4-7 degrees above everything else 48-96 hours out.

MakerofCarrot - thanks for being so involved here. You make some of THE best apps around, and I'm sure its appreciated by all! I see more and more AW out there... and weather is one of the few use cases I have for AW that work well.

I do suggest using WU's data source. I'd be happy to pay more.

So I've been working on integrating WU as a data source, and there are a couple issues.

The first is that WU doesn't provide all the data that Dark Sky does, such as short-term rain forecasts or super-extended hourly forecasts, meaning I would need to grab Dark Sky data at the same time to fill in what's missing.

The second is that Dark Sky charges for each individual API call, meaning my costs go up or down based on how many people are using the app, while WU has a fixed price per month. So that means I'd need to make a minimum amount each month to keep that service going.

All that is to say that this might cost a bit more than the Dark Sky-only subscription, possibly $1 per month. I definitely want to offer WU as an option, as their data is more accurate in certain locations, but I'm also scared about it costing me a lot of money and it being a really bad business decision :p

Thanks for the update! A couple of thoughts:
  1. I would be willing to pay an extra $1 per month/$12 per year for more accurate data. The weather complications on the watch are so much better than Apple's stock versions, it would be worth it to me at least. So that would bring the WU subscription option to ~$15/year?
  2. I don't think I would particularly miss the short term rain forecasts or super extended hourly forecasts from Dark Sky because they haven't been accurate enough for me to rely on.

I'm not 100% sure on the final price yet, but I don't think it'd be more than $12 total for a year. And the problem with just skipping the Dark Sky forecast completely is that rain notifications wouldn't work without it, which is part of the reason at least some people are using the subscription. I suppose I could skip the download for people who don't have precipitation notifications turned on, though.

Got a new phone and cannot enable notifications (have Premium subscription) on my phone. When I enter the app settings notifications are enabled but in the phone settings there is no way to enable them for the app?

In the premium subscription screen in the iOS app, there should be a notifications section - that's where you go to turn on notifications.

I probably didn't make myself clear...I have enabled them there. Unless there's another place?
