I understand, too, but I just don't think a phone is worth being obsessive over. And I don't abuse my stuff, either. Other than one phone that broke and was replaced by insurance, I've never had a phone that had more than one or two very minor scratches on it. These things really aren't that hard to take care of without a case.
I agree. Other than one freak screen crack the one time I dropped it on my 6+ I've had no other issues. Yes, I've dropped my iPhone 5 a few times (once on gravel) and my 6s+ on carpet. But other than scratches and a few nicks on the 5 there is nothing wrong with both phones.

Now my 2009 HTC Touch Pro I did drop on concrete once and it went face down and skidded on the face about 20 feet. Built like a tank. But it wasn't an iPhone. Went off to someone in Maryland so they could keep their Sprint SERO plan.

But it just isn't something I overly concern myself with.

I think certain cases, especially Apple's own, really do make the phone easier for some to handle. Whether their problem be slipperiness, too thin, or just simply want a little bit of protection, the  Silicone Case &  Leather Case for iPhone add to the phone's overall quality. It doesn't interfere with the iPhone's use or look ridiculous while using. They end up being the perfect pair for many, myself included.

I don't even like these though, they tend to be made of cheap horrible bendy plastic, they feel crap to touch, they are to flexible where it joins the phone, they collect crap down the edges, they give it a horrible glossy look - and to be honest it'd just look better if it had some light marks or scratches on it, which are quite hard to make anyway.

See, I find scratches or marks infuriating. I prefer a Kate Spade or Sonix case, or when I'm in a situation where there are increased possibilities for a drop, I prefer to use a Speck Candyshell Grip or an Otterbix Symmetry.

I can easily remove the cases. I can't easily fix a shattered screen.

Different strokes, different folks. You're OK with marks or scratches on the device. I'm not.

And I like finding cute cases.

I'm going to guess that you are probably not one of those people who shop the scratch and dent product sections in stores? :D

OK so if I have to ask what that is it means that I don't??!!!?
LOL, probably not.

Sometime retailers offer steep discounts on products that have become slightly damaged either from shipping to the store or via customer return. Or on display items or open box items (because some customer returned the item without all the items or a customer opened the item in the store). Some retailers make an entire shop out of it.

We've (my wife and I) picked up items from time to time that because they were scratch/dent were at least $50-100 off the retail price.

One TV I got once was $600, but I paid $300 because it was a demo model.

I guess if it's a dent in the back or something that I don't see every time I use the device, I wouldn't care.

If it's clearly visible it would drive me insane and therefore "diminish my experience" so I'd probably pass it up.

Example - I got a new CR-V and on the first winter I scratched the bonnet and the windscreen using a broom to clean off snow. I know, pretty idiotic.

First chance I got I went in and got both fixed. Every time the sun shone on the windscreen the scratch was visible, it drove me insane.

If I got dings and scratches on my phone I'd have a breakdown.

But the thing is you have to look very closely and study my phone for any minor abrasions, where as I can see your otterbox from the other side of the room haha.

My iPhone 6 was utterly destroyed though, I slammed in the car door as it was falling out of my pocket TWICE, so it bent one way, and then the other...that kinda spoilt it until I eventually got it replaced. The 6s is strong enough to survive that now.

EW. GROSS.
Not really. :D

If you're a retailer and you have lots of people coming in and buying just a new mattress or a new boxspring, but not both what do you have?

A bunch of brand new, but mismatched box springs and mattresses.

In my area, there's a local retailer that makes an annual sale out of this. Because they are mismatched (but still brand new) the customer gets a discount.

It's OK. If I know it's there, it's THERE. For me it would "diminish my experience."

Have you ever done one of those optical illusion puzzles where once you solve the puzzle you can't unsee it anymore? That's how I am with dings and scratches.

I'd happily go caseless if current iPhones weren't so slippery. I don't know how people caseless don't have a problem, especially if you use your phone one-handed at all. Increased size also makes this more of a problem.

I've used a iPhone from every redesign. The only ones that were not slippery were the 3G/3GS because they were made of plastic. I still have all my old iPhones and compared this again recently.

I use a very minimal case (Spigen Thin Fit Smooth Black) on my 6S, and I use it only for grip, not protection. I don't care about the looks of my device and don't need to show people I'm using an iPhone, so I don't really have a problem with this.

That's the thing. I don't use my iPhone one handed. Even with my 5 I used two hands and even more so with my 6s+.

I may not use a case but I'm not about to drop my phone because I am careless in how I handle it.

I don't sense any harsh plastic... and the edge features barely work. Its much harder to press at the edge when its cover and its not as nice to swipe in from the edge when you've totally lost the curved glass (the only nice bit of design on the iPhone 6..) those bulky corners on the official case are grim. I hated them the more I looked at them, I hate the way they stick out, I hate how thick they are, I hate how they make the phone look like a toy. I hate the way it makes the phone over 50% thicker too. Nah, wasn't doing it for me i'm afraid.

Understand your point but I don't really get the fascination with the curved glass. It's barely detectable before it disappears into the plastic surround. Wish the glass radiused straight to the aluminum.

I've never broken a phone because I take care of my $800 tech products. I just keep a thin case on it because the phones are pretty slippery without them- and in the case of my 6s Plus, the protruding camera means it doesn't lie flat without a case. I went for Apple's black leather case on the space gray phone. Frankly, that's a "better experience" than the phone is without a case. It lies flat, it's easier to grip, it feels better to hold leather than aluminum in my opinion, it's more protected, and it's still plenty thin. For that matter, I think the case looks better than the back of the actual phone- I know the whole scuff gate nonsense made them change, but the iPhone 5's dark gray back was much better looking than the new space gray in my opinion.

I might go for a silver phone with a black case next time. The white front and black back looks pretty nice too, and I've been getting the black phone since the iPhone 4.

I mean, I agree with Ive that the phone without the case has a good feel to it. But their case has a better feel in my opinion. Tech21's Evo Elites are a pretty good option too- they color coordinate with the phones and aren't too bulky, although I think the leather case has a better feel than plastic cases. Fortunately, neither cover the ports or the camera.

Ive speaks in marketing tongue, designed to mesmerize the easily impressed. Words hyper focused on creating an illusion of brilliance, words used to sell phones. By using expressions many Apple devotees fail to understand, they assume whatever he means must be spectacular.

The tactile experience my 6 series iPhones provide is slippery and not conducive to being easy to use. Flat slabs front and rear, a case less iPhone is very disappointing.

Conversely without a so called "World Class Designer" Motorola has created the tactile masterpiece known as the MOTO X Pure.

My MX Pure is a phone I've been able to use without a case, safely, since day one. With its compound curves, stylish modern design, it's warm and inviting, not cold and industrial like the J.Ive slab.

If Apple built products that were as superior as Apple execs think they are, the sales volume would rise even higher.

This is spot on. Look, the iPhone 6s is the best phone ever made. Period. I love mine.

But when he says we spend so much time figuring out how it feels, WHY IS IT SO SLIPPERY THEN?

Surely his hands aren't like a frogs with suction cups.

Also, why does Apple make a case if they want you to use it naked?

Surely they want to sell the case to make more profits.

Is the iPhone 6s amazing? Yes it is.

But let's be real...Jony I've marketing his socks off talking about all that magical BS.

I wonder if this (two-handed only) is the case with others who go caseless.

I think I can use a 6S+ one-handed if it had a thin case, but definitely not caseless (I've tried this on the store).

I just like my apple leather case because it gives more grip. It feels too slippery without. Also I have sweaty hands, so it helps there too

This!
Despite dropping a few phones in the past i resisted using cases until i got the iPhone 6+. It's impossible to use without one as it's as slippery as an eel if holding with one hand. I'm amazed the issue didn't come up in testing. A little bit of brushed metal would come in very handy.... It's not a size issue as i have large hands and i've picked up plenty of other phones of the same size and never had the same problem. They should use the metal from the original iPhone, that had the best grip of all the iPhones; the issue has actually got worse with each revision sadly.

EDIT: I have however learned to love my apple leather case :)

Thing is I don't want to worry about my phone when I take it out of my pocket. With a case I can easily put in on any surface, slide it across the desk without any thoughts other than my routine. When I go caseless I will have to keep babying my phone and giving undue thought to it every time I want to use it.There is no peace of mind there

And I know for a fact that shiny Apple logo would get scratched on the first surface I put it on.And in lighting it starts looking horrible.Know this from experience from my iPad Mini
Yeah, that's happened to me, too. You know what I did?

I shrugged, made an insurance claim, and had a new phone the next day.

Still go caseless after that and haven't had a problem since.

Congratulations. You paid top dollar for insurance for something which a $10 case would have negated and you wouldn't even have to bother with the hassle of getting a replacement
Well, yes, it's like, well, you know logical conclusion if you have a phone and keep dropping it. You are holding it wrong.
It's not my fault the device is Whoops-there it goes slippery

A quote from the piece on Apple from 60 minutes:

Ive explained that zeroing in on a product's "emotional context" is a big part of Apple's development process—investing lots of time experimenting with materials, surfaces, textures, colors, shapes, to arrive at the right tactile experience. He showed the 10 prototypes for the iPhone 6 and 6s that had been made with their in-house machining tools, before landing on the two sizes that "felt right."

Seems a shame that we put cases on our iPhones when all this time is spent to make them feel right huh?

We kill them with plastic and blocky rubber cases.

It's a nice thought but it didn't work for me. I went case free for 2months on my iPhone 6 and then dropped it. Shattered the glass costing me $130.
